Working closely with <strong>the</strong><br />

partner communities, <strong>TCCD</strong>’s<br />

leadership in <strong>Extension</strong> service<br />

saw <strong>the</strong> need to align its<br />

programs and services that<br />

are truly development and<br />

sustainable through <strong>the</strong> use<br />

<strong>of</strong> its available resources with<br />

<strong>the</strong> maximum collaboration<br />

and participation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different<br />

Colleges in <strong>the</strong> delivery<br />

<strong>of</strong> its programs and services.<br />

Year 2009 marks prolific rendering<br />

<strong>of</strong> services for <strong>the</strong><br />

partner communities. The<br />

inter– disciplinary approach<br />

in <strong>the</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> programs<br />

and services <strong>as</strong> a mechanism<br />

for <strong>the</strong> total development <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> people in <strong>the</strong> community.<br />

on <strong>the</strong> communities.<br />

On May 23, 2009, <strong>TCCD</strong> conducted<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>as</strong>sessment and<br />

planning session with <strong>the</strong> different<br />

Coordinators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

different Colleges. <strong>TCCD</strong> provided<br />

<strong>the</strong> development projects<br />

that will contribute towards<br />

realization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

thrust. The <strong>as</strong>sessment<br />

went productively. Each Col-<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> extension <strong>arm</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> is moving for <strong>the</strong><br />

continuous aim <strong>of</strong> sustainability<br />

and self– reliance for<br />

<strong>the</strong> partner communities <strong>as</strong><br />

designed in <strong>the</strong> 5-year Development<br />

Plan.<br />

The Trinitian Center in <strong>the</strong><br />

coming years <strong>of</strong> service<br />

hopes to achieve toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with <strong>the</strong> energies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>,<br />

our partner communities,<br />

government and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

network agencies, <strong>the</strong> selfempowerment<br />

at all levels <strong>of</strong><br />

engagements slowly but<br />

surely by utilizing and maximizing<br />

<strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> all material<br />

and financial resources to its<br />

fullest for <strong>the</strong> greater number<br />

<strong>of</strong> marginalized people<br />

within <strong>the</strong> are<strong>as</strong> <strong>of</strong> operation.<br />

Taking Initial Steps in Capabi l ity Building<br />

In <strong>the</strong> <strong>as</strong>sessment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> involvement and participation <strong>of</strong> partner communities in <strong>the</strong> programs and services <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> center,<br />

<strong>TCCD</strong> made initial step in capability building through lectures on Community Development. L<strong>as</strong>t April 18, 2009, around fifty<br />

(50) participants from partner communities completed <strong>the</strong> hands-on training on community organizing.<br />

An orientation training on community development w<strong>as</strong> organized by <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Nursing on May 11, 2009 in Pagrai, Mayamot,<br />

Antipolo. A core group <strong>of</strong> five (5) members w<strong>as</strong> formed to <strong>as</strong>sist in <strong>the</strong> social preparation stage and next steps to undertake<br />

in <strong>the</strong> organizing process especially when <strong>the</strong> students will have to leave <strong>the</strong> community. Ano<strong>the</strong>r training w<strong>as</strong> also conducted<br />

on May 16, 2009 at <strong>the</strong> CHTM Alston Hall. The training on Participatory Project Development and Management (PPDM)<br />

w<strong>as</strong> participated by <strong>the</strong> leaders in-charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> livelihood committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> barangays <strong>of</strong> Tatalon and Damayang Lagi. The<br />

highlight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> training w<strong>as</strong> to practice writing <strong>the</strong> fe<strong>as</strong>ibility studies for <strong>the</strong> projects <strong>the</strong>y identified for <strong>the</strong> communities. The<br />

goal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fe<strong>as</strong>ibility study is to provide indicator/s that <strong>the</strong> project identified is fe<strong>as</strong>ible to undertake.

Significant Involvements <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Colleges for Total Human Development<br />

The interdisciplinary approach <strong>of</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> needs <strong>the</strong> involvement <strong>of</strong> different Colleges and Units<br />

from <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> for <strong>the</strong> attainment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total human development. In <strong>the</strong> <strong>as</strong>pect <strong>of</strong> Ecological<br />

Program, <strong>the</strong> NSTP cl<strong>as</strong>ses under Reverend Pearl is helping in <strong>the</strong> cleaning and greening <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> campus. To date, <strong>the</strong> students brought some ornamental plants that can be placed in are<strong>as</strong><br />

to give an ambiance <strong>of</strong> fresh and green atmosphere.<br />

The College <strong>of</strong> Medical Technology also contributes to <strong>the</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> nature by cleaning <strong>the</strong><br />

creeks in Barangay Damayang Lagi. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, through <strong>the</strong>ir Project HEALS, <strong>the</strong> College Coordinator,<br />

Ms. Violie B<strong>as</strong>cao, facilitated <strong>the</strong> request <strong>of</strong> our partner community for deworming in<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir area. They also collected stool for laboratory examination. They also conducted blood typing<br />

for children in Tatalon<br />

G raduat e School Providing Guidance for Effective Prog ram<br />

D eliver y<br />

Project CORE <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Graduate School continuously supports <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> programs<br />

and services <strong>of</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> through developing evaluation instruments that will be very helpful<br />

for <strong>the</strong> center. Dr. Ramon Marcelino, GS Coordinator, leads <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> evaluation instrument<br />

for <strong>the</strong> wellness program. This w<strong>as</strong> used by <strong>the</strong> dance <strong>the</strong>rapy activity, <strong>as</strong> this w<strong>as</strong><br />

evaluated after eight consecutive Saturdays. All <strong>the</strong> trainings conducted by <strong>TCCD</strong> and o<strong>the</strong>r Colleges<br />

were rated 4.50 with verbal interpretation <strong>of</strong> “Outstanding” and results are kept in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

A performance evaluation instrument w<strong>as</strong> also prepared by <strong>the</strong> Graduate School Coordinator<br />

for our partner Foundation to be used by <strong>the</strong> staff and <strong>the</strong> administrator.<br />

The Graduate School Coordinator, Dr. Marcelino, also partake in <strong>the</strong> Spiritual Nurturance Program<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Center by developing tool for <strong>the</strong> Spiritual Needs Inventory that w<strong>as</strong> piloted already<br />

at E<strong>as</strong>tern College in Baguio. This w<strong>as</strong> submitted <strong>as</strong> a proposal in URDC. The instrument w<strong>as</strong> also<br />

given to our partner community to determine <strong>the</strong> spiritual needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> constituents <strong>the</strong>reby a<br />

holistic program and services can be developed that will respond to <strong>the</strong> spiritual growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

people. The project holder is now <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> Chaplain. On <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community,<br />

<strong>TCCD</strong> is collating <strong>the</strong>m to be analyzed and interpreted by <strong>the</strong> coordinator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> graduate<br />

school.


T h e Colleg e <strong>of</strong> Ar ts and Scien ces Nour ishing minds <strong>of</strong><br />

Parents and Children<br />

On July 29, 2009, <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences conducted a half-day seminar on Proper Tutoring <strong>of</strong> Preschool<br />

in Barangay Tatalon. The participants were <strong>the</strong> parents from COPE for <strong>the</strong>m to learn to take <strong>the</strong>ir part<br />

<strong>as</strong> guardians in <strong>the</strong> education <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pupils. After <strong>the</strong> said seminar, <strong>the</strong> College Coordinator, Ms. Sharon Brila<br />

also initiated <strong>the</strong> conduct <strong>of</strong> tutorial services to thirty five (35) students from different public elementary<br />

schools <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same barangay. Below were <strong>the</strong> participants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> training with Pr<strong>of</strong>. Nati and Ms Brila <strong>as</strong> facilitators.<br />

The M<strong>as</strong>s Communication students enrolled in Communication for Development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Arts and<br />

Sciences in consultation with <strong>TCCD</strong> organized a symposium on Children’s Rights which <strong>the</strong>y conducted on<br />

March 5, 2009 at <strong>the</strong> Barsam Hall toge<strong>the</strong>r with some representatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> youths in <strong>the</strong> barangay. The<br />

speaker w<strong>as</strong> a program specialist <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UNICEF country <strong>of</strong>fice, Mr. Jess Far. It w<strong>as</strong> a heart w<strong>arm</strong>ing symposium<br />

where <strong>the</strong> children aired <strong>the</strong>ir wishes for <strong>the</strong>mselves especially <strong>the</strong>ir dreams <strong>of</strong> being in school and <strong>the</strong><br />

violence and pains <strong>the</strong>y received from <strong>the</strong>ir parents. The students who organized <strong>the</strong> event truly extended<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir time to attain <strong>the</strong>ir objective.

Project BEST providing Alter n at ive Livel ihood Oppor t unities<br />

f or Par tner Commu n ities<br />

The College <strong>of</strong> Business Administration with its Project<br />

BEST spearheads trainings for our partner communities<br />

to help improve <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lives. To date, <strong>the</strong><br />

graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M<strong>as</strong>sage Therapy course l<strong>as</strong>t December<br />

2008 is now making some money from <strong>the</strong> actual<br />

practice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>as</strong>sage. After <strong>the</strong>ir 60-hour training in<br />

<strong>TCCD</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y moved to an advanced course at <strong>the</strong> City<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Manila and graduated l<strong>as</strong>t February 27,<br />

2009. Eleven (11) out <strong>of</strong> seventeen (17) graduates<br />

p<strong>as</strong>sed <strong>the</strong> NC2 skills requirement from <strong>the</strong> TESDA.<br />

They were given <strong>the</strong>ir international certificates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

accreditation that will qualify <strong>the</strong>m to work abroad if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y wish to. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> graduates also acquired his<br />

license <strong>as</strong> m<strong>as</strong>seur from <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Health l<strong>as</strong>t<br />

June 2009 and is now mentoring co-participants.<br />

A 60-hour b<strong>as</strong>ic dressmaking w<strong>as</strong> also <strong>of</strong>fered for our<br />

partner communities. Ten (10) participants graduated<br />

from this life skill training that is held every Tuesday<br />

and Thursday at <strong>TCCD</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice and is closely supervised<br />

by Ms. Rose Genorga, <strong>the</strong> College Coordinator. The<br />

graduation w<strong>as</strong> held at <strong>the</strong> BARSAM-AVR with Dr.<br />

Palispis giving <strong>the</strong> inspirational message. The graduates<br />

sewed <strong>the</strong>ir graduation dresses and displayed<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir product during this occ<strong>as</strong>ion.<br />

“ Lubos ang aking p<strong>as</strong><strong>as</strong>alamat sa <strong>Trinity</strong> sa naituro nila sa<br />

akin na nakakatulong na sa pang araw-araw kong pamumuhay,<br />

malaking tulong talaga sa akin ang ibinigay nilang<br />

oportunidad sa amin” , said by Regine Belo, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

graduates.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r life skill training w<strong>as</strong> also facilitated by <strong>the</strong><br />

CBA focused on 90-hour Cosmetology and Hair Science<br />

Course for our partner communities from July-<br />

November 2009. Twelve (12) students graduated from<br />

<strong>the</strong> training held l<strong>as</strong>t November 17, 2009 at <strong>the</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong><br />

Office. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> students were able to share what<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have learned while o<strong>the</strong>rs express <strong>the</strong>ir gratitude<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> for giving <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />

learn. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m claimed that <strong>the</strong>y are now working<br />

in Hair Salons using <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>the</strong>y have acquired<br />

from <strong>the</strong> training. Dr. Palispis and Dr. Bathan<br />

gave inspirational messages for <strong>the</strong> graduates. The graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cosmetology Cl<strong>as</strong>s<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Education with <strong>the</strong> B<strong>as</strong>ic Education par tnering<br />

for Education and Training Program<br />

<strong>the</strong>y leave school every boy and girl should know how much <strong>the</strong>y do not know, and be imbued<br />

with a lifelong desire to know it.” ~William Haley<br />

The College <strong>of</strong> Education with its Community<br />

Outreach Coordinator, Ms. Juliet Tuazon, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> student volunteers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College, usually<br />

carried out with plans for <strong>the</strong> Pre-School in<br />

Barangay Tatalon, one <strong>of</strong> our partner communities.<br />

Accomplishing <strong>the</strong>ir plans for <strong>the</strong> School<br />

Year 2008-09, <strong>the</strong>y held <strong>the</strong> graduation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

pre-school cl<strong>as</strong>ses on March 13, 2009 at <strong>the</strong><br />

Cabanban Hall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> B<strong>as</strong>ic Education Campus.<br />

As a preparation for <strong>the</strong> School Year 2009-2010,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Coordinators from <strong>the</strong> B<strong>as</strong>ic Education, Ms.<br />

Thelma dela Cruz and Ms. Juliet Tuazon <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

College <strong>of</strong> Education recruited new applicants<br />

for <strong>the</strong> pre-school cl<strong>as</strong>ses in Barangay Tatalon<br />

and Damayang Lagi. Apart from <strong>the</strong> received<br />

applications, <strong>the</strong>y also conducted home visitation<br />

to validate <strong>the</strong> data provided for <strong>the</strong> final<br />

selection. After careful <strong>as</strong>sessment, <strong>the</strong> enrolment<br />

period began where Pre-school from Tatalon<br />

gained a total number <strong>of</strong> 112 pupils while<br />

20 pupils were also enrolled in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Trinity</strong>–<br />

Damayang Lagi Learning Center (TDLC). The<br />

election and induction Parents-Teachers Association<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers in COPE w<strong>as</strong> also achieved.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> Nutrition month celebration, <strong>the</strong><br />

B<strong>as</strong>ic Education conducted seminar to parents<br />

<strong>of</strong> TDLC on “W<strong>as</strong>tong Nutrisyon, Lifestyle iw<strong>as</strong>an”<br />

whose resource person is Mr. Ebenezer<br />

Beloy, Technology and Livelihood Department<br />

The Center for Human Kinetics through Project LEAD and St. Luke’s College <strong>of</strong> Nursing with <strong>the</strong>ir Project<br />

CHANGE spearheaded a Dance Therapy opened to all barangay residents in <strong>the</strong> four barangays in response<br />

to <strong>the</strong> request from <strong>the</strong> barangay representatives. The dance <strong>the</strong>rapy h<strong>as</strong> its objective <strong>of</strong> putting premium on<br />

dance for mental fitness and healing. Over thirty (30) barangay residents attended this. It w<strong>as</strong> held at <strong>the</strong><br />

court <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> B<strong>as</strong>ic Education in a month and after evaluating <strong>the</strong> program, <strong>TCCD</strong> found out that this can be<br />

continued at a specific Barangay since many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m are coming from Damayang Lagi. This brought savings<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by not paying overtime pay for <strong>the</strong> technician and electricity for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> B<strong>as</strong>ic Education<br />

facility. It is held every Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 o’clock in <strong>the</strong> morning. The trainor is Ms. Emmely Arboleda,<br />

College Coordinator <strong>of</strong> CHK . A long term program is possible with <strong>the</strong> involvement <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Colleges.<br />

The St. Luke’s College <strong>of</strong> Nursing student-volunteers <strong>as</strong>sisted in getting <strong>the</strong> blood pressure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> participants<br />

to determine whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are fit for <strong>the</strong> activity with <strong>the</strong> supervision <strong>of</strong> Mr. Michael Osea, SLCN Coordinator<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r faculty.<br />

Project LEAD extends <strong>the</strong>ir Dance Therapy in Calvary Hills, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> Barangay Damayang Lagi. This<br />

also gives opportunity to <strong>the</strong> existing youth organization members to join in <strong>the</strong> said activity every morning to<br />

stay fit. Aerobics cl<strong>as</strong>s w<strong>as</strong> also scheduled every Wednesday in <strong>the</strong> Gymn<strong>as</strong>ium which opened <strong>the</strong> participation<br />

<strong>of</strong> people from partner communities sharing same experience <strong>of</strong> a wellness activity with TUA’s employees<br />

and students.

Volunteers Reception Night<br />

May 26, 2009 at <strong>the</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> Office w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> minimal participation <strong>of</strong> Volunteers amongst students, faculty, Non-<br />

Teaching Personnel and Administrators in <strong>the</strong>ir involvement in community extension services.<br />

To address <strong>the</strong> need to incre<strong>as</strong>e consciousness related to community services among different stakeholders,<br />

<strong>TCCD</strong> realized <strong>the</strong> need to start a segment for <strong>the</strong> students and faculty population through a ga<strong>the</strong>ring held on<br />

July 16, 2009 at <strong>the</strong> Alston Hall .This w<strong>as</strong> called “Volunteers Reception Night”, where all Colleges were represented<br />

to serve <strong>as</strong> a springboard for acquaintance and collaboration among different Colleges. The <strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

event w<strong>as</strong>, “Improving lives through Volunteerism” in which Dr. Epitacio Palispis, VPAA, gave an inspirational<br />

message. Below is <strong>the</strong> complete detail <strong>of</strong> his speech:<br />

His Introduction<br />

In <strong>the</strong> evaluation <strong>of</strong> colleges and universities, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> striking dimensions that receive <strong>the</strong> scrutiny <strong>of</strong><br />

evaluators in <strong>the</strong> <strong>as</strong>pect <strong>of</strong> social responsibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institution. More specifically, this is referred to <strong>as</strong><br />

social orientation and community involvement in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> voluntary accreditation, service component<br />

program for university status, and social responsibility or corporate social responsibility in <strong>the</strong> evaluation<br />

<strong>of</strong> educational institution <strong>as</strong> a corporate organization.<br />

It always appears in many institutions that <strong>the</strong> community program may be in order and its proper place<br />

and perspective. However, evaluation usually shows that although <strong>the</strong> program is successfully implemented,<br />

simply because <strong>the</strong> same is funded by donor institution, in many schools <strong>the</strong> voluntary participation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various sectors such <strong>as</strong> faculty and non-teaching personnel, students and administrators is<br />

found wanting. It is expected that <strong>the</strong> various sectors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academic community have to render voluntary<br />

services for <strong>the</strong> success <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program. This voluntary participation is expected to start in <strong>the</strong> planning<br />

stage, to c<strong>as</strong>cade throughout <strong>the</strong> implementation and evaluation <strong>of</strong> such program.<br />

His Experience in Volunteerism<br />

I w<strong>as</strong> unlucky enough that during my student days, <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> volunteerism w<strong>as</strong> not yet very much emph<strong>as</strong>ized.<br />

My only voluntary activities included my being <strong>of</strong>ficer in <strong>the</strong> Student Catholic action, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Legion <strong>of</strong> Mary, which w<strong>as</strong> to be expected because I studied in a Catholic school. This w<strong>as</strong> highlighted by<br />

my active participation <strong>as</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Supreme Student Council <strong>of</strong> my schools from secondary to <strong>the</strong><br />

collegiate level. My volunteerism work that day w<strong>as</strong> limited to <strong>the</strong> activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> organizations I joined.<br />

That w<strong>as</strong> no community programs <strong>of</strong>ficially adopted by colleges and universities <strong>the</strong>n.<br />

I w<strong>as</strong> only 19 yrs. Old when I started to teach in a catholic high school. Armed with my baccalaureate and<br />

m<strong>as</strong>ter’s degree, I w<strong>as</strong> made college dean at <strong>the</strong> age 26. I w<strong>as</strong> already 34 when I became <strong>the</strong> president <strong>of</strong><br />

a catholic college. Then, I w<strong>as</strong> initiated to <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> graduate education when I became graduate<br />

school dean at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 36.<br />

There w<strong>as</strong> not so much <strong>of</strong> volunteerism I experienced during <strong>the</strong> early years <strong>of</strong> my career life. Actual volunteerism<br />

in my career started right after I finished my m<strong>as</strong>teral course in sociology where I claimed that<br />

students, while still in <strong>the</strong>ir years <strong>of</strong> study, must be exposed to actual life realities to better prepare <strong>the</strong>m<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir life <strong>as</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. In this way, <strong>the</strong>y would be able to find deeper meanings in every activity<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were undertaking. As Froebel aptly says, “learning by doing,” or simply, “learning by actually experiencing.”<br />

At <strong>the</strong> time I started teaching in college, <strong>the</strong>re w<strong>as</strong> no community program in <strong>the</strong> institution, except for<br />

some undertakings where <strong>the</strong> college undertook activities in partnership with some community organizations.<br />

There w<strong>as</strong> no real community program designed by <strong>the</strong> college for <strong>the</strong> community. I started a<br />

movement in <strong>the</strong> college participated in by both students and student leaders, who formed core group<br />

working directly with <strong>the</strong> out-<strong>of</strong>-school youths in various communities. We started initially by implementing<br />

leadership formation program for both students and <strong>the</strong> out-<strong>of</strong>-school youths, first, to bridge <strong>the</strong> gap<br />

between <strong>the</strong>se two sectors <strong>of</strong> society. This later became a coordinating program for all youth organizations,<br />

in <strong>the</strong> entire town, and later, <strong>the</strong> entire province. The college became <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> youth organizations<br />

in <strong>the</strong> province.

This movement became to be one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most successful community programs in <strong>the</strong> entire province. This<br />

motivated me to get involved in <strong>the</strong> enhancement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community programs <strong>of</strong> colleges and universities.<br />

His Insights Learned from Experiences<br />

In <strong>the</strong> first place, all colleges and universities, or simply higher education institutions, are expected to<br />

have community programs. This is a mandate found in <strong>the</strong> third function <strong>of</strong> higher education. This is<br />

called extension. <strong>Extension</strong> is simply defined <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> applying or testing knowledge. This is<br />

b<strong>as</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong> premise that if some sectors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> society, described to be <strong>the</strong> poor and <strong>the</strong> marginalized,<br />

do not have <strong>the</strong> means to come to <strong>the</strong> college or universities, and avail <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various program <strong>of</strong>ferings<br />

due to poverty, let <strong>the</strong> school reach out to <strong>the</strong>se people.<br />

Volunteerism work is not seen in <strong>the</strong> job description <strong>of</strong> any employee. If it does appear <strong>as</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> job<br />

description, <strong>the</strong>n, it is no longer work <strong>of</strong> volunteerism. It becomes a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mandated job <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual.<br />

This is usually <strong>the</strong> problem in <strong>the</strong> evaluation <strong>of</strong> community programs <strong>of</strong> many colleges and universities.<br />

People get involved because <strong>the</strong>y get paid for it. Some employees directly become part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community<br />

program because <strong>the</strong>y receive honorarium, or simply because <strong>the</strong>re is a budgetary allocation for such activities.<br />

We might be <strong>as</strong>king, “What comprise <strong>the</strong> voluntary participation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various sectors in <strong>the</strong> colleges<br />

and universities?”<br />

Time. Time will always be available for people who are willing to share. One voluntary work rendered by<br />

some pr<strong>of</strong>essors is to tutor <strong>the</strong>ir students who are not able to catch up with <strong>the</strong> pace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lesson in<br />

cl<strong>as</strong>s. They render extra time for <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir students. In some cl<strong>as</strong>ses, time is extended even<br />

outside <strong>of</strong> cl<strong>as</strong>s hours. These pr<strong>of</strong>essors extend hours even without remuneration. Usually, <strong>the</strong> reward<br />

is even more satisfying: self-fulfillment and self-realization. A consolidated timeframe for volunteerism<br />

work will surely lead to success <strong>of</strong> community work.<br />

Expertise. The <strong>University</strong> is very much rich in terms <strong>of</strong> expertise possessed by various individuals representing<br />

<strong>the</strong> different pr<strong>of</strong>essions. Each college h<strong>as</strong> its own peculiar specialization. Because <strong>of</strong> this,<br />

people possess different expertise. These variations in terms <strong>of</strong> expertise will have to comprise good<br />

ingredients in team work. As I always quote Shakespeare, “The world is just like a very big stage<br />

where everyone h<strong>as</strong> his or her appropriate role to play.” In this regard, <strong>the</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> can be made up <strong>of</strong><br />

volunteers with varied expertise, hence, various roles in what we call “<strong>University</strong> Integrated Community<br />

Program.” Each unit should know its focus <strong>of</strong> participation and involvement. One unit h<strong>as</strong> to focus<br />

along its own expertise. This is in connection with <strong>the</strong> saying, “No one h<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> monopoly <strong>of</strong> expertise.”<br />

Material resources. In my experience working with volunteers, <strong>the</strong>re were some people who would like to<br />

volunteer through direct participation and involvement, but <strong>the</strong>y cannot due to many o<strong>the</strong>r involvements.<br />

Usually, <strong>the</strong>se people give material support. As experienced by my youth leaders whenever<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had activities related to <strong>the</strong>ir leadership formation program, <strong>the</strong>y go around some possible supporters<br />

who might be willing to participate actively but just cannot do it physically. They just support<br />

through <strong>the</strong>ir donation in kind.<br />

Commitment and dedication. The commitment to serve on <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> any individual is very necessary.<br />

One’s commitment to serve <strong>the</strong> le<strong>as</strong>t <strong>of</strong> his brethren will surely develop his or her dedication to participate<br />

and get involved. Many project become sporadic, such <strong>as</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> gifts and foodstuffs<br />

during Christm<strong>as</strong> time, and simply ending at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christm<strong>as</strong> se<strong>as</strong>on. Usually, <strong>the</strong>re is no continuity<br />

in <strong>the</strong> program simply due to <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> commitment among <strong>the</strong> implementers. It is in<br />

this light that <strong>the</strong> commitment and dedication to <strong>the</strong> program will be necessary in order that <strong>the</strong> program<br />

will be sustainable.<br />

Your whole self. Voluntary work and participation like <strong>the</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> will depend, first on our intention to<br />

serve. Perhaps everyone will be <strong>as</strong>king, “How can I contribute to social responsibility, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> core<br />

values <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> is adhering to?” I believe every person h<strong>as</strong> his or her own gift to share to o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

What is needed is one’s intention to <strong>of</strong>fer that gift to o<strong>the</strong>rs.

The meaning <strong>of</strong> Volunteerism to him:<br />

One beautiful story in <strong>the</strong> Scripture relevant to <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> volunteerism is <strong>the</strong> parable <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Good<br />

Samaritan. There w<strong>as</strong> a man who w<strong>as</strong> slain along <strong>the</strong> highway. Hw w<strong>as</strong> found lying on <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

highway. Two p<strong>as</strong>sers by came. First, <strong>the</strong> levy or a priest p<strong>as</strong>ses by. Hurrying for fear that he might be<br />

late for his appointment, he just ignores <strong>the</strong> man. Later, <strong>the</strong> scribe p<strong>as</strong>ses by. For fear that something<br />

happened and he might be suspected <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crime later, he rushed away from <strong>the</strong> man. Then came a<br />

Samaritan, a stranger, who does not even know <strong>the</strong> man. He came to rescue <strong>the</strong> victim, cured his<br />

wounds, and brought him to <strong>the</strong> nearby inn. Before leaving, he left some money to <strong>the</strong> inn keeper<br />

and left a word that he would be willing to send some more help if needed.<br />

I see <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> volunteerism in <strong>the</strong> person <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Good Samaritan. He spends his time to rescue <strong>the</strong><br />

victim. Without any hesitation, he gave his full support to <strong>the</strong> person in need. He does not know <strong>the</strong><br />

victim, but he decided to help even to <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>of</strong> bringing <strong>the</strong> man to an inn for his comfort, at his<br />

expense.<br />

Our focus, improved quality <strong>of</strong> life, may be realized through effective partnership among <strong>the</strong> various<br />

colleges. Improved quality <strong>of</strong> life may be realized through <strong>the</strong> effective involvement <strong>of</strong> our faculty,<br />

non-teaching personnel, administrators, students, and alumni in volunteerism.<br />

The Scripture once more reminds us, “Whatever little thing you do to <strong>the</strong> le<strong>as</strong>t <strong>of</strong> your brethren in my<br />

name, you have done it unto Me”. May each one experience joy and satisfaction in participating in<br />

volunteerism work in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

The alumni who were volunteers during <strong>the</strong>ir time <strong>of</strong> stay in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> came and shared <strong>the</strong>ir experiences to<br />

<strong>the</strong> students who were currently involving <strong>the</strong>ir selves in volunteer works <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir respective colleges. According<br />

to <strong>the</strong>m, it w<strong>as</strong> a heartfelt experience to help o<strong>the</strong>rs, extending time and effort to those people that really need<br />

help.<br />

Dr. Josefina S. Sumaya, <strong>University</strong> President, made <strong>the</strong> event remarkable by giving message that made <strong>the</strong> participants<br />

reflect on <strong>the</strong>ir inner intentions in life. Below is <strong>the</strong> content <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> President’s message:<br />

When Dr. Bucoy <strong>as</strong>ked me to give a message, I <strong>as</strong>ked myself: what message? Then I remembered<br />

our new vision statement: “ A premier Christian <strong>University</strong> in <strong>Asia</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Pacific, transforming a<br />

community <strong>of</strong> learners towards a humane society.” All <strong>of</strong> a sudde, I thought <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaders in <strong>the</strong><br />

Bible and <strong>the</strong>ir prayer requests <strong>as</strong> leaders. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m had <strong>the</strong> opportunity to am<strong>as</strong>s wealth, to<br />

be powerful, to be popular, to be beautiful, when God said, “I will give you whatever you <strong>as</strong>k for.<br />

And how did <strong>the</strong>se people c<strong>as</strong>h in on <strong>the</strong>ir heavenly lotto?”<br />

Abraham prayed: “Help me follow you.”<br />

Moses requested: “Help me free your people”<br />

David <strong>as</strong>ked: “Help me slay <strong>the</strong> giant threatening our people”<br />

Es<strong>the</strong>r prayed: “Help me save <strong>the</strong>se people”<br />

Solomon requested: “Give me wisdom to rule your people”<br />

Isaiah requested: “Give lips to speak you word”<br />

Peter requested: “Help me feed you sheep”<br />

Jesus prayed: “Help me show <strong>the</strong>m you love”<br />

These leaders did not <strong>as</strong>k anything for <strong>the</strong>mselves. In <strong>the</strong>ir minds, <strong>the</strong>y only wanted to<br />

serve God and show <strong>the</strong>ir love for Him. Indeed, very noble intentions. I also remember that <strong>the</strong>re

is one verse in <strong>the</strong> Bible which says a noble person plans only noble things. Noble is such a beautiful<br />

word but one does not hear it mentioned very much anymore. We have Ten Outstanding<br />

Young Men but not Ten Noble Young Men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philippines. Outstanding Alumna/Alumnus but<br />

do we have Noble Alumna/Alumnus, it does not sound good. Perhaps it is because we don’t feel<br />

it. It does not sink in. We don’t internalize it.<br />

But I believe our people are b<strong>as</strong>ically noble at <strong>the</strong> core. When ABS-CBN or GMA announces that<br />

some tragedy hits a poor family, donations pour in by <strong>the</strong> thousands, sometimes millions.<br />

Why am I talking to you about noble leaders? It is because you have <strong>the</strong> best opportunity to develop<br />

among our students <strong>the</strong> nobility <strong>of</strong> purpose in life.<br />

Toge<strong>the</strong>r, let us think <strong>of</strong> producing noble Christian leaders. Let us have ano<strong>the</strong>r Camelot, a group<br />

<strong>of</strong> leaders fully dedicated to nobility and its pursuits.<br />

In my prayer tonight, I am going to think <strong>of</strong> noble things, like how to shine more in <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong><br />

darkness and temptations, how to contribute to <strong>the</strong> noble causes in <strong>the</strong> world, one <strong>of</strong> which is<br />

turning our students into noble Christian leaders.<br />

Engagement <strong>of</strong> NSTP and Partner Organizations<br />

<strong>TCCD</strong>’s role in NSTP is only to facilitate deployment <strong>of</strong> students since many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se local organizations<br />

are partners <strong>of</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong>’s long term programs. To <strong>as</strong>sess that both <strong>the</strong> efforts made by <strong>the</strong> students<br />

and <strong>the</strong> local partners are complementary, <strong>TCCD</strong> invited <strong>the</strong> non-government organizations<br />

head where <strong>the</strong> NSTP students were deployed. This gave <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> opportunity to share<br />

how <strong>the</strong> students contributed to <strong>the</strong>ir organizations and <strong>the</strong> clientele that <strong>the</strong>y serve. So far all <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m were appreciative about <strong>the</strong> involvement <strong>of</strong> our students in <strong>the</strong>ir organizations. The conference<br />

also ended with some recommendations on how <strong>the</strong> partnership with <strong>the</strong> NSTP cl<strong>as</strong>ses can<br />

be streng<strong>the</strong>ned.The local NGO’s who participated were Silong Tanglaw, Foundation, Inc. with<br />

Rev.Fr. Gerardo Yabyabin, OSJ,Program Director; Kuya Center for Street Children, with Bro. Rey<br />

Acabado, SSS, Program Director; and KKPC in Tatalon, with Ms. Evelyn Galang, Program Coordinator.<br />

The o<strong>the</strong>r communities where NSTP students are deployed were: Barangay Damayang<br />

Lagi; Barangay Tatalon; Barangay Kalusugan; and Barangay Kristong Hari. <strong>TCCD</strong> also <strong>as</strong>sisted in<br />

<strong>the</strong> evaluation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se NSTP efforts through <strong>the</strong> able <strong>as</strong>sistance <strong>of</strong> Dr. Marcelino, GS <strong>TCCD</strong> Coordinator.<br />

Dr. Cesar Orsal, Dean <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Adela Gillette , Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong><br />

TUA Community, Rebuilding Lives after Typhoon<br />

Ondoy<br />

The Trinitian Center for Community Development, facilitated <strong>the</strong><br />

generation <strong>of</strong> relief goods that were given to <strong>the</strong> affected are<strong>as</strong> .<br />

Immediate response <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Management Committee, staff and students<br />

from different departments and colleges w<strong>as</strong> remarkable despite<br />

one week suspension <strong>of</strong> cl<strong>as</strong>ses. The Episcopal Church also<br />

coordinated with <strong>TCCD</strong> on <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> relief goods <strong>the</strong>y ga<strong>the</strong>red<br />

from <strong>the</strong>ir donors.<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> 1,188 packed goods were distributed to <strong>the</strong> partner communities<br />

<strong>of</strong> TUA. 469 came from <strong>the</strong> Episcopal Church while 719<br />

came from <strong>the</strong> contribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different colleges and departments<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. 100 gallons <strong>of</strong> water came from <strong>the</strong> Graduate<br />

School and medicines from College <strong>of</strong> Medical Technology were<br />

also given to <strong>the</strong> residents <strong>of</strong> Barangay Damayang Lagi to address<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir immediate need for potable water and existing illness due to<br />

<strong>the</strong> dumped garbage on <strong>the</strong> area. One bundle <strong>of</strong> blankets, jackets<br />

and towels with two bundles <strong>of</strong> children’s clo<strong>the</strong>s were donated to<br />

Barangay Tatalon <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>se were <strong>the</strong>ir stated needs for <strong>the</strong> residents<br />

who were relocated in <strong>the</strong> evacuation are<strong>as</strong>.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> goods, <strong>the</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> Director initiated <strong>the</strong> conduct<br />

<strong>of</strong> Psychosocial Debriefing to COPE parents <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice realized<br />

<strong>the</strong> need to help <strong>the</strong> people manage <strong>the</strong>ir own emotions and<br />

traumatic experiences after <strong>the</strong> typhoon. The participants were able<br />

to share <strong>the</strong>ir personal experiences during <strong>the</strong> height <strong>of</strong> typhoon<br />

and were very thankful that <strong>the</strong>y were saved. From that incident,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y became aware on <strong>the</strong> need to establish a Dis<strong>as</strong>ter Management<br />

Team that will help <strong>the</strong>m become prepared and alert for future<br />

dis<strong>as</strong>ters since <strong>the</strong>y confessed that <strong>the</strong>y were all caught unprepared<br />

during <strong>the</strong> typhoon<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Calvary Hills, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> Barangay Damayang<br />

Lagi, experienced total dev<strong>as</strong>tation <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bridge that connects<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to economic hub. It w<strong>as</strong> really hard for <strong>the</strong>m to cross <strong>the</strong> river<br />

using <strong>the</strong> alternative bridge <strong>the</strong>y built. With this, <strong>the</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> Director<br />

sought help from its networks and generous donor in <strong>the</strong> person <strong>of</strong><br />

Ms. Margrit Messmer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Alban Memorial Foundation Inc. gave<br />

monetary amount enough to build <strong>the</strong> bridge for <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Calvary.<br />

The local <strong>of</strong>ficials and <strong>the</strong> people’s organization in <strong>the</strong> community<br />

did <strong>the</strong> re-building <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bridge and its maintenance until now.<br />

The <strong>Trinity</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> made it possible to help its own communities<br />

through its own resources with <strong>the</strong> generosity felt in <strong>the</strong><br />

hearts <strong>of</strong> people who rendered services to God. The calamity that<br />

destroyed properties and lost many lives <strong>of</strong> people eventually became<br />

a way to show that Christians will always extend help to<br />

his/her neighbor especially in times <strong>of</strong> calamity.<br />

Youth Mobilization in partner communities<br />

Registration <strong>of</strong> youth during <strong>the</strong> General Assembly Joey Garbin in sharing his experiences <strong>as</strong> an <strong>of</strong>ficer<br />

The Community Development Worker <strong>of</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> started to involve <strong>the</strong> youth in <strong>the</strong> community for organizational<br />

development. She <strong>as</strong>sisted in organizing <strong>the</strong> youth in Calvary Hills, Barangay Damayang Lagi and patch<br />

up some internal differences that <strong>the</strong>y have contend with <strong>as</strong> residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community. As <strong>the</strong> youth organization<br />

moves on <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>ning its leaders and members, <strong>TCCD</strong> will have to sustain its support<br />

for its total organizational development. The youth sector in Barangay Tatalon shall also be included in <strong>the</strong><br />

quest for generation change for <strong>the</strong>y are one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main problems in <strong>the</strong> community. Incre<strong>as</strong>ing number <strong>of</strong><br />

Out-<strong>of</strong>-School Youth is evident in Barangay Tatalon and Damayang Lagi <strong>as</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> fraternities are incre<strong>as</strong>ing.<br />

Both needs to be properly guided to slowly diminish <strong>the</strong> gap between <strong>the</strong> existing youth groups<br />

from <strong>the</strong> two barangay.<br />

<strong>Trinity</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> with its partnership with <strong>the</strong> Dangerous Drugs Board in collaborative efforts <strong>of</strong> Trinitian Center for<br />

Community Development (<strong>TCCD</strong>), Office <strong>of</strong> Student Affairs (OSA) and Center for Human Kinetics with its College Coordinator,<br />

Ms. Emmely Noemi Arboleda, who seats in <strong>the</strong> Board this year upon her representation <strong>of</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Inter-Agency Council–<br />

Drug Abuse Prevention Education (DDB– IAC– DAPE) spearheaded <strong>the</strong> celebration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Drug Abuse and Prevention Control<br />

Week on November 16-21, 2009. Activities were planned and implemented according to <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me, “ Kilos Pamayanan! Droga’y<br />

Patuloy Labanan!”<br />

As a start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DAPC Week Celebration, a Kick-<strong>of</strong>f ceremony w<strong>as</strong> held at <strong>the</strong> Quezon City Circle where students from different<br />

municipalities joined <strong>the</strong> event. The Office <strong>of</strong> Student Affairs took charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> participation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> students for <strong>the</strong> parade<br />

wherein a number <strong>of</strong> NSTP students came in to take <strong>the</strong>ir part <strong>as</strong> concern and responsible citizen <strong>of</strong> nation. Moreover, <strong>the</strong><br />

youth organization from Calvary Hills, Barangay Damayang Lagi, one <strong>of</strong> our partner community, joined <strong>the</strong> Interpretative<br />

Dance Contest and won <strong>as</strong> second place.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> coming days <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> week-long celebration, <strong>the</strong> College Coordinator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Center for Human Kinetics with <strong>TCCD</strong> and<br />

OSA facilitated a life skills seminar workshop for Fourth Year students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> and to Out-<strong>of</strong>-School Youth from Barangay<br />

Damayang Lagi. The resource person is Ms. Shella Marquez from <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Student Affairs and she focused her discussion<br />

on Self-Esteem, Communication, Building Relationship and Decision-Making in relation to <strong>the</strong> current situation <strong>of</strong> a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> children and youth involved in c<strong>as</strong>es <strong>of</strong> Prohibited Drugs. The participants were able to identify <strong>the</strong> re<strong>as</strong>ons why <strong>the</strong>ir generation<br />

take prohibited drugs <strong>as</strong> an option to solve <strong>the</strong>ir problems. They also came up with <strong>the</strong> realization that substance abuse<br />

can only make <strong>the</strong>ir lives miserable and that <strong>the</strong>y can do something to help o<strong>the</strong>rs.

The Trinitian Center for Community Development with <strong>the</strong> leadership <strong>of</strong> Dr. Juliet K. Bucoy anchored <strong>the</strong> programs and services <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

by <strong>the</strong> center to <strong>the</strong> vision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Villaverde Court No.47, Order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Amaranth in Nueva Vizcaya towards its quest in achieving<br />

a standard education for <strong>the</strong> students <strong>of</strong> Gov. Juan Manzano Elementary School in Omoc <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>y have chosen <strong>the</strong> school for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

“Adopt a School Program”. The said school is situated in <strong>the</strong> poorest community <strong>of</strong> Villaverde where students usually walk at a distance<br />

<strong>of</strong> one kilometer having no school shoes to protect <strong>the</strong>ir feet from <strong>the</strong> rocky roads. The school educates <strong>the</strong> elementary students<br />

from Grade One-Six with Special Education cl<strong>as</strong>ses reaching a total number <strong>of</strong> One Hundred Six enrolled pupils for <strong>the</strong> School Year<br />

2009-2010. There are only two big cl<strong>as</strong>srooms to accommodate all <strong>the</strong> students inclusive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir mini library and one administration<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice for <strong>the</strong> principal and teachers.<br />

December 2009 is ano<strong>the</strong>r memorable Christm<strong>as</strong> experience for <strong>the</strong> pupils <strong>of</strong> Gov. Juan Manzano Elementary School since <strong>TCCD</strong><br />

made full efforts to mobilize its internal and external resources to achieve its objective <strong>of</strong> sharing its blessings. For two (2) consecutive<br />

years, The St. Luke’s College <strong>of</strong> Nursing is sponsoring <strong>the</strong> Grand Gift Giving in <strong>the</strong> said school. They provided <strong>the</strong> gifts for <strong>the</strong> children<br />

who were very happy to receive school supplies and toys. They also invited Jollibee to entertain <strong>the</strong> children. The most highlighted<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program is <strong>the</strong> unexpected donation <strong>of</strong> multimedia equipment for <strong>the</strong> disabled children received by <strong>the</strong> teacher-in-charge<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program. The school administrator, teachers and students were very grateful to Ms. Margrit Messmer <strong>of</strong> Alban Memorial Foundation<br />

Inc., who granted <strong>the</strong>ir wish to have <strong>the</strong> said equipment for a better learning experience <strong>of</strong> Children with disabilities in Vil-<br />

laverde Elementary School.<br />

L<strong>as</strong>t December 31, 2009, before <strong>the</strong> year ends, a post Christm<strong>as</strong> Party celebration<br />

w<strong>as</strong> facilitated by <strong>TCCD</strong> through <strong>the</strong> sponsorship <strong>of</strong> Ms. Margrit<br />

Messmer <strong>of</strong> Alban Memorial Foundation Inc. The monetary amount given<br />

by <strong>the</strong> generous donor provided shirts that served <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> uniform <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

organization for <strong>the</strong> members that actively participates in <strong>the</strong>ir activities<br />

within <strong>the</strong> year. 45 youth members were given uniforms and <strong>the</strong> design<br />

will be created by <strong>the</strong> youth. Additional food allowance w<strong>as</strong> provided by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Community Service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Alumni Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

The youth leaders and <strong>the</strong> members were blessed with <strong>the</strong> generosity <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> sponsors. According to <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y are more inspired to do a lot for <strong>the</strong><br />

year 2010 specially now that <strong>the</strong>re are people who are willing to give <strong>the</strong>m<br />

support and <strong>as</strong>sistance in <strong>the</strong>ir endeavor. Moreover, Dr. Bucoy brought<br />

hope to <strong>the</strong>m when she announced that she is looking for sponsors for<br />

poor but deserving out-<strong>of</strong>-school youth to send <strong>the</strong>m to school preferably<br />

in a public state university within <strong>the</strong> vicinity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community for next<br />

school year for <strong>as</strong> long <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>y meet <strong>the</strong> criteria set by <strong>the</strong> sponsors. They<br />

are looking forward to this opportunity <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>re were candidates chosen by<br />

<strong>the</strong> youth leaders with <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UNACHI (United Neighborhood<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> Calvary Hills Incorporated) President.

B u ilding Networks and Linkages for more effective deliver y<br />

<strong>of</strong> ser v i ce<br />

<strong>TCCD</strong> continuously builds its network and linkages with like-minded institutions. We have started to invite<br />

an NGO whose network is in sourcing out micr<strong>of</strong>inance for poor communities but on holistic paradigm.<br />

On March 14, 2009, Mr. Edwin Perez, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Space, Inc joined in <strong>the</strong> monthly meeting and gave an orientation<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir organization’s programs and services. This w<strong>as</strong> just an initial meeting with <strong>the</strong> community<br />

representatives and <strong>the</strong> Coordinators to see how a partnership could be developed towards building sustainable<br />

communities and linkages with proper consideration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vision and mission <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r organizations<br />

that are aligned to our own vision.<br />

The centers where <strong>the</strong> NSTP students were deployed during <strong>the</strong> second semester for SY 2009-2010 were:<br />

Kuya Center, Silong Tanglaw, ROTCHNA in Tatalon and our partner barangays <strong>of</strong> Damayang Lagi, Tatalon,<br />

and Kalusugan. We invited representatives from <strong>the</strong>se NGO’s in <strong>TCCD</strong> for an orientation in <strong>the</strong> community<br />

immersion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NSTP students. We are also planning to see possible long term engagements for<br />

sustainable initiatives toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Education and <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Service Learning under <strong>the</strong><br />

leadership <strong>of</strong> Dr. Orsal to systematize long term sustainable programs using <strong>the</strong> resources from <strong>the</strong> students.<br />

As a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Metro Quezon Network <strong>of</strong> Children in Need <strong>of</strong> Special Protection, <strong>TCCD</strong> is working<br />

closely with o<strong>the</strong>r members in support <strong>of</strong> its thrust in <strong>the</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> families within <strong>the</strong> community. In<br />

fact, l<strong>as</strong>t June 18, 2009, <strong>TCCD</strong> hosted <strong>the</strong> MQN meeting with <strong>the</strong> agenda <strong>of</strong> revisiting <strong>the</strong> vision and mission<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> network.<br />

Being an active member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Council for Social Development (NCSD), <strong>TCCD</strong> w<strong>as</strong> able to attend<br />

seminars free <strong>of</strong> registration. Two (2) Coordinators (CHTM) and (CAS) attended a forum on <strong>the</strong> law on<br />

Child Sexual Abuse on May 29, 2009 at Taft Avenue Manila. This w<strong>as</strong> an opportunity for <strong>the</strong>m to be aware<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> laws affecting women and children since <strong>the</strong>y will be working with <strong>the</strong> communities in <strong>the</strong> long<br />

run. Ano<strong>the</strong>r forum on Spirituality: A vital component <strong>of</strong> healing sexually abused children and on RA<br />

9523– An act requiring <strong>the</strong> Certification on adoption by <strong>the</strong> DSWD w<strong>as</strong> also attended by <strong>TCCD</strong> staff.<br />

Moreover, l<strong>as</strong>t December 6-9, 2009, <strong>the</strong> Community Development Worker <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said <strong>of</strong>fice attended <strong>the</strong><br />

Seminar Workshop <strong>of</strong> NCR Service Providers for Children’s Rights and Protection in Baguio City. With this,<br />

a formulated action plan on children protection issues within six months and rights-b<strong>as</strong>ed strategies for<br />

partner communities w<strong>as</strong> realized.<br />

Open engagement with <strong>the</strong> Alban Memorial Foundation Inc. is indeed a good partnership for it supports<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> its development thrust for <strong>the</strong> community. Through <strong>the</strong>m, A Swiss friend sponsored a Feeding<br />

Activity for children in Calvary Hills, Barangay Damayang Lagi in celebration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Children’s Month on<br />

October 14, 2009.<br />

The <strong>TCCD</strong> Director w<strong>as</strong> involved with <strong>the</strong> Project ISO <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>. As a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Steering Committee and <strong>as</strong> Chair<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Internal Audit several organizational meetings were held<br />

in <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> April and half month <strong>of</strong> May 2009. it w<strong>as</strong> hard<br />

work towards coming up with full documentation and finalization<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> process manuals and operational manual <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department<br />

Participated in <strong>the</strong> Strategic Planning Workshop held on 14th<br />

and 15th <strong>of</strong> April at Meralco, Antipolo City<br />

Seats <strong>as</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Quality Assurance Team organized by<br />

<strong>the</strong> VPAA for Accreditation, Autonomous Status <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Attended <strong>the</strong> course on Internal Audit organized by Rosehall on<br />

August 15-17, 2009 at Diamond Hotel, Manila and successfully<br />

p<strong>as</strong>sed <strong>the</strong> course. This w<strong>as</strong> re-echoed to TUA Internal Auditors<br />

on September 10 and 11, 2009.<br />

Invited by San Seb<strong>as</strong>tian College in Manila to share best practice<br />

in Community Development b<strong>as</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> dis<strong>as</strong>ter<br />

management <strong>as</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> TUA on October 9, 2009<br />

The Audio Visual Presentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>TCCD</strong> w<strong>as</strong> successfully<br />

produced in coordination with Dr. Orsal. Two videos were produced:<br />

one for <strong>the</strong> program and services <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Center and one<br />

for matching donors for future projects.<br />

The <strong>TCCD</strong> Director attended <strong>the</strong> National Assembly <strong>of</strong> ACSCU-<br />

AAI in Tagbilaran City, Bohol Province on May 12-15, 2009, with<br />

Dr. Palispis, Dr. Bugnalen, Ms Credo, Mr. Magculang and three<br />

deans, Dr. Bathan, Dr. Dayrit and Dr. Gillette who have received<br />

<strong>the</strong>irs plaques <strong>of</strong> level 3 accreditation status for five years for <strong>the</strong><br />

course <strong>of</strong>ferings under <strong>the</strong>ir Colleges.<br />

The <strong>TCCD</strong> Director participated in <strong>the</strong> International Conference<br />

on Service Learning in Hongkong from May 31- June 6, 2009 .<br />

This w<strong>as</strong> sponsored by UBCHEA and <strong>the</strong> Lingnan <strong>University</strong> <strong>as</strong><br />

organizer. Our participation with Dr. Orsal and Mr. Barte<br />

brought us to a level <strong>of</strong> organizing <strong>the</strong> NSTP cl<strong>as</strong>ses for service<br />

learning, while <strong>the</strong> students gets grade credits <strong>the</strong>y will also be<br />

contributing in <strong>the</strong> thrusts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Community <strong>Extension</strong> service.<br />

Thank you to <strong>the</strong> President, VPAA and VPAF for all your support.<br />

Three (3) residents <strong>of</strong> Damayang Lagi participated in<br />

<strong>the</strong> National Youth Congress in Marikina sponsored<br />

by <strong>the</strong> National Youth Commission. The youths<br />

were Arjay Garbin and Joey Garbin all out <strong>of</strong> school<br />

youths residing in Calvary Hills on May 19-22, 2009.<br />

Since <strong>the</strong>y were also trained already in CO <strong>the</strong>y will<br />

be able to do activities that are related to drug abuse<br />

and prevention activities for <strong>the</strong>ir group. On <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r hand, Leomar Gomez, also from Damayang<br />

lagi, 4 th year incoming BS Education at TUA and a<br />

volunteer in <strong>TCCD</strong>, attended <strong>the</strong> youth leadership<br />

training in Cabangan, Zambales also on May 19-22,<br />
