<strong>WELDER</strong>FUNCTIONPerforms journey-level work in the welding of repairs for automotive and heavy equipment vehicles, equipment andmachinery and fabricating of metals parts and construction projects.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is the journey level class in the Welder series. Positions are normally filled by advancement from the Trades Helperlevel or, when filled from outside, requires prior welding and fabricating work experience. Appointment to this levelrequires that the incumbent be performing the full range of duties and meet the qualification standards for the class.SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWork is performed under general supervision of a supervisor or higher level of authority.SUPERVISION EXERCISEDMay exercise technical supervision of Trades Helper.EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS1. Repairs broken or cracked metal parts and assemblies by gas or arc welding.2. Cuts, bends and shapes metal to size and form; fits and welds parts together to make new assemblies or to modifyexisting assemblies in accordance with blueprints, sketches, patterns or written or oral instructions.3. Removes damaged metal sections and parts using cutting torch; fabricates and weld new section or part as necessaryto repair equipment, vehicle and machinery.4. Fabricates welding jigs and fixtures, doors, brackets, racks, special tools and parts for equipment, vehicles andmachinery to specified dimensions or patterns.5. Welds, grinds, sharpens and retempers broken tools.6. Performs general welding repairs on pipe, structural steel, tanks, frames, castings, containers, trailers, truck bodiesand similar equipment.7. Brazes and solders non-ferrous metals.8. Commutes to locations requiring servicing and repair assistance and performs fabrication and welding repairs orinstalls temporary measures.9. Maintains daily work records of work done, material used and time spent.10. Maintains an adequate supply of materials, equipment and tools required to fulfill work assignments.11. Cleans, maintains and services required equipment and tools used during performance of work assignments. Keepswork area clean.12. Performs related work as required.WORK CONTACTSRegular contact with associate personnel and other county departments in the performance of various welding andfabrication work assignments.CONDITIONS OF WORKWork is subject to varying post or job site assignments and may be subject to call-back, on-call status and overtime andirregular schedules including completion of work assignments on weekends and holidays. Work may include traveling outof-townto outlying or remote areas of the County involving exposure to varying weather conditions which includesperforming service/repair work in extreme hot and cold temperatures. Work also includes the use and safe operation ofhand and power tools and equipment in cramped and contorted positions and utilizing varying amounts of physical exertionto perform work assignments and exposure to chemical fumes and hazardous materials. All employees of Mohave County are subject to immediate callout when an emergency, disaster or breach of homeland securityoccurs. All employees are considered to be available for these types of events and will immediately respond, in accordance withCounty Emergency Operations Plan, when directed by the Chairman of the Mohave County Board of Supervisors, CountyManager, the Homeland Security/Emergency Management Coordinator, or when directed by their department director/electedofficial and/or immediate supervisor. Such call to respond and assist may involve those activities assigned to their regular jobresponsibilities and incorporate other non job related duties as necessary and required of an employee to respond to theemergent matter at hand. An employee’s response to these matters may require the working of unusual, long hours over apossibility of an extended period of time with infrequent breaks or rest periods. An employee who is working with anaccommodation must meet with their supervisor and department director/elected official to discuss their requirement forresponse.DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESPractical knowledge of:Skill in:Ability to:--methods, procedures, materials, equipment and tools used in the welding and fabrication of metals and relatedmaterials.--occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade including proper use and care of tools and equipment.--gas and arc welding techniques and materials and the techniques of brazing and soldering non-ferrous metals.--the techniques of brazing and soldering non-ferrous metals and welding aluminum.--characteristics and applications of ferrous metals and alloys as applied to welding techniques and materials.--repairing and fabricating iron and steel parts and assemblies utilizing gas and arc welding techniques.--safe, effective operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in welding andfabrication of metals and related materials to include acetylene and electrical welding equipment.--cutting, fitting, brazing and soldering copper and brass materials.--plan and lay out work projects and estimate type and quantities of materials required to complete workassignments in the most economical and practical manner.--safely and effectively service, maintain and repair assigned equipment in accordance with standard repair,maintenance, operation, and safety procedures to include acetylene and electrical welding equipment.--make welded repairs to heavy equipment in field or shop.--fabricate parts and assemblies in accordance with blueprints, sketches and oral and written instructions or from apattern example.--follow and interpret written and oral instructions.--establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel and personnel of other Countydepartments.--fulfill physical requirements of work assignments to include moderate lifting of 20 - 50 pounds, utilizing physicalexertion required to perform assignment and performing work assignments with the use of tools and equipment incramped and contorted positions and performing work assignments in various terrains and in varying weatherconditions including exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures.ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAININGThree to five (3-5) years successful experience in the welding and fabricating area as a Trades Helper or when filled fromoutside, three to five (3-5) years experience as a Welder or related field involving heavy duty combination welding (gas andarc) of ferrous metals and alloys; satisfactory completion of trade school welding courses and apprenticeship program. an equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTMust possess the ability to obtain a valid Commercial Drivers License, Class B with Tanker endorsement within a sixmonth period of hire date.
