Typically, <strong>the</strong> electricity consumption <strong>of</strong> a membrane cell unit increases by approximately<br />

3 – 4 % after three years due to <strong>the</strong> accumulation <strong>of</strong> impurities in <strong>the</strong> membrane and <strong>the</strong> aging<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> electrode coatings [ 1, Ullmann's 2006 ], [ 63, Euro <strong>Chlor</strong> 2010 ].<br />

Cross-media effects<br />

Raw materials and energy are consumed <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> manufacture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> electrolysers and <strong>the</strong><br />

auxiliary equipment.<br />

Technical considerations relevant to applicability<br />

Generally, <strong>the</strong>re are no technical restrictions to <strong>the</strong> applicability <strong>of</strong> this technique <strong>for</strong> new<br />

electrolysis units. In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> an enlargement <strong>of</strong> an existing membrane cell unit, some<br />
