This hurts ourcompetitiveness in a time of accelerating pace of changes. Tofill this gap, we recently took the initiative to reengineer GE’sinnovation process. The China Innovation Center (Chengdu), thecompany’s first collaborative innovation facility worldwide softlaunchedin March, marks a solid first step in this journey.CIC Chengdu sets itself apart from regular GE research anddevelopment sites in many ways. Customers are introduced intothe specially-designed labs to define and help develop solutionsto their own unique problems. Co-location of GE technologistsand commercial function colleagues allows for efficientnetworking of ideas and better knowledge sharing about marketneeds. Product testing facilities based on real life conditionschannel first-hand user experience back to innovators almostinstantly, enabling them to improve ideas faster and reject thosethat don’t work much quicker. Via CIC, we will have our innovationgame lifted.To start this journey in Chengdu makes a lot of sense. The cityassumes a commanding position economically in China’s vastwestern inland where the next wave of China’s (and the world’s)growth is expected to take shape. Proximity to customers insome of GE’s most promising business domains, includingprimary care and shale gas will result into more collaborativeinnovation possibilities. Most importantly, in Chengdu, we don’tneed to worry about talent pipeline, which are core to innovationcapabilities of any kind, thanks to the city’s rich science andtechnology education heritage. This is a good place to gain afoothold in GE’s quest to consolidate and extend the company’stechnology leadership in China, if not the entire world.Personally, I was amazedby things I saw in the softopening of CIC Chengdu lateMarch. To me, the vitalityseen among the 300 plusemployees there encapsulatesthe excitement of what we aretrying to do. It’s a compelling case why people should work herefor long term. We are a group of people always pushing theenvelope, generating new ideas and acting upon them. The CICrepresents a broader endeavor to revolutionize our innovationsystems, core to GE’s competitive advantage.
