Intravenous pyelogram (<strong>IVP</strong>)Appointment informationDate Time LocationGeneral information• Check in at <strong>the</strong> Regions Radiology Department at your appointment time.• Do not bring children, as child care is not provided.• To cancel or reschedule this appointment, please callExam orderedYour health care provider has ordered an <strong>IVP</strong>, which involves imaging your urinary tractorgans (kidneys, ureters and bladder).If you know you are allergic to anything that contains iodine, such as shellfish or iodizedsalt, or if you are currently taking <strong>the</strong> drug Metformin (glucophage), please inform yourhealth care provider or <strong>the</strong> technologist before proceeding with this exam.If you are pregnant or think you may be, are 70 years or older, have diabetes or kidneydisease or problems, talk to your health care provider for fur<strong>the</strong>r directions beforehaving this exam.To prepare for this examIn order for this test to be a success, it is important that you follow <strong>the</strong> instructions below sothat your organs are completely clear of food and fluids.(continued)Copyright © 2003 HealthPartners, Inc.CHP/04-03/#200768


The day before your <strong>IVP</strong>, you should do <strong>the</strong> following:• During <strong>the</strong> day, drink about eight glasses of liquid, over and above your normal diet. The liquids youdrink may be clear citrus fruit juices and o<strong>the</strong>r juices, such as apple, cranberry or grape; tea or coffeewithout milk or cream; or plain water. You may have soft drinks, unless your health care provider hastold you o<strong>the</strong>rwise. These eight glasses of liquid are in addition to all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r fluids you take. You maydrink more than this number but not less.• Have a light dinner at 6 p.m. You may have only clear liquids and low-residue foods. Foods allowedinclude: black coffee or tea, clear soups (fat free) and clear fruit juices, small portions of fowl (white meatonly) or fish, plain gelatin, and white bread (no butter). Do not eat: vegetables, fruits or fruit nectars (onlyclear juices allowed), nuts, fats, butter, milk or any milk product, fried foods, beef, pork or lamb, andwhole-grain cereals.• After dinner, take one dose of Milk of Magnesia. (One dose = 2 tablespoons of Milk of Magnesia,followed by an 8-ounce glass of water.)• If your <strong>IVP</strong> appointment is scheduled before 11 a.m., do not eat or drink after midnight and until <strong>the</strong>exam is done.• If your <strong>IVP</strong> appointment is scheduled for after 11 a.m., eat a clear-liquid breakfast at 8 a.m. on <strong>the</strong> day of<strong>the</strong> exam. Have nothing to eat or drink after that and until <strong>the</strong> exam is done.• Medications may be taken with a small amount of water.**Diabetic patients, contact your health care provider for any needed changes in your insulin dosages.During <strong>the</strong> examThe average time needed for an <strong>IVP</strong> is 60 minutes.What to expect•You will be asked to put on a gown and to remove clothing and jewelry if needed.•You will lie on an X-ray table, and films will be taken to check for correct positioning.• After <strong>the</strong> films have been checked, dye that contains iodine will be put into a vein in your arm.• A warm, flushed feeling throughout your body or a metallic taste in your mouth may occur when <strong>the</strong>dye is put in. These are normal reactions that will go away one or two minutes after <strong>the</strong> injectionis done.• Several films are taken at 10-minute intervals to show <strong>the</strong> whole urinary tract.• Near <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> exam, you will be taken to <strong>the</strong> bathroom and asked to empty your bladder.• One last film will be taken by <strong>the</strong> technologist to show <strong>the</strong> empty bladder.• You may leave after <strong>the</strong> films are seen by <strong>the</strong> radiologist.Reporting of resultsIf you have not made an appointment to discuss your results with your health care provider, you can obtainyour results by calling your clinic <strong>the</strong> day after <strong>the</strong> exam, late in <strong>the</strong> afternoon.Copyright © 2003 HealthPartners, Inc.CHP/04-03/#200768
