Halfway along the fuselage there was a porthole about 2feet in diameter. It was divided into four equal sections, and there was a small door below it, measuring about 4½feet high and 2½ feet wide. This door was open and whitelight was pouring through it. Directly outside the object ahuman-looking man was examining the underside of thecraft with some kind of flashlight. As Eddie climbed out ofhis car, this person turned, climbed up a metal ladder, andentered the door. "I'm sure it was aluminum," Laxtonnoted. "When the door snapped shut, it sounded like whena door closes."He described the pilot as weighing about 180 poundsand being 5 feet 9 inches tall with a light complexion. Hewas wearing what looked like a mechanic's cap with the billturned up."I got the impression due to his stooped shoulders hewas about thirty to thirty-five years old," Eddie said. "Hewore either coveralls or a two-piece suit that looked likegreen-colored fatigues. I got the idea that he had threestripes above and three below [on his sleeve]. The abovestripes were in an arch and the below stripes were in a wideV shape."A few seconds later "the craft started up... it soundedlike a high speed drill. It lifted off the ground about fiftyfeet high and headed toward the Red River. In about fiveseconds it was a mile away."When the machine took off, Laxton reported, "The hairon the back of my hands and neck stood up."Admittedly excited by what he had seen, Eddie got backinto his car and drove about 100 yards when he came upona huge tank truck parked beside the road. The driver, C. W.Anderson of Snyder, Oklahoma, said that he had seensomething following him in his mirror and that he had alsowatched it fly away toward the Red River. After their storyappeared in local papers, other truck drivers came forwardwith reports of having seen similar objects along Highway70 earlier in the year.Eddie Laxton faithfully reported the incident to hisemployer, the Air Force, and a couple of days later a line ofjeeps pulled up in front of his office. "A colonel and otherofficers wanted to see the spot where the object had been,"Laxton said. "I went out with them and showed them theplace. They asked me a lot of questions while their mensearched the place with all kinds of instruments. Theyseemed to know just what they were doing."
