Executive Summarytypically maneuver control measures such asboundaries, fire support coordination measures(FSCMs), airspace coordination measures (ACMs), afire support coordination line (FSCL), or multiples ofthese measures. Close coordination is required todeconflict and integrate airspace use with theemployment of joint fires. Component fire supportagencies establish FSCMs. ACMs facilitate theefficient use of airspace to accomplish missions andsimultaneously provide safeguards for friendly forces. The airspace coordinating entities should be included inthe ACP and promulgated in the ACO.Methods of Joint AirspaceControl.Enemy Air EngagementOperations. The methods of airspace control vary across the rangeof military operations, from positive control of all airassets in an airspace control area to procedural controlof all such assets, or any effective combination. ACPsand systems accommodate these methods based oncomponent, joint and national capabilities, andrequirements. The airspace control structure must beresponsive to evolving enemy threat conditions andchanging tactical situations.Engaging enemy aircraft with friendly air, land, andmaritime assets must be fully coordinated to optimizeall aspects of friendly combat power. Joint engagementzone (JEZ) operations involve the employment andintegration of multiple air defense systems in order tosimultaneously engage enemy targets in the operationalarea. Successful JEZ operations depend on positivelyidentifying friendly, neutral, and enemy aircraft. JEZoperations require effective C2 and positive control isnormally used in a JEZ. Fighter engagement zoneoperations usually occur above and beyond the range ofsurface-based air defenses, and are highly dependent oncoordination and flexibility within the ACS. Missileengagement zone (MEZ) operations are ideal for pointdefense of critical assets, protection of maneuver units, and area coverage of the joint security area. MEZoperations offer the ability to engage the enemy with ahigh- and low-altitude, all-weather capability beyondthe forward line of own troops (FLOT) or disruptmassed enemy air attacks prior to committing fighterassets, and are effective across the full range of airdefense operations and enemy threats. For urgent oremergency combat situations, the ACA can authorizexiii
