Almonds - Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, almonds help keep blood vessels healthy. According to the Food and Drug Administration, eating about a handful (1.5 ounces, or 42.5 grams) a day of most nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachio nuts and walnuts, may reduce your risk of heart disease. Just make sure the nuts you eat aren’t salted or coated with sugar. Orange Juice - Orange juice is quite high in vitamin C, which helps boost your body’s immune system. The high level of antioxidants in orange juice may help reduce your risk of cancer, and other components of the juice may help relieve arthritis pain and decrease your risk of heart attack, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The citrus in orange juice has also been shown to prevent or at least lessen the development of kidney stones. Olive Oil - Olive oil contains a potent mix of antioxidants that can lower your “bad” (LDL) cholesterol but leave your “good” (HDL) cholesterol untouched. The Food and Drug Administration recommends using about 2 tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil a day in place of other fats in your diet to get its hearthealthy benefits. The cholesterol-lowering effects of olive oil are even greater if you choose extra-virgin olive oil, meaning the oil is less processed and contains more heart-healthy antioxidants. But keep in mind that “light” olive oils are usually more processed than extra-virgin or virgin olive oils and are lighter in color, not fat or calories. Steamed Asparagus - There’s nothing wrong with a platter of crudités or a salad if you want to improve your diet, but steaming may help improve the cholesterol-lowering capabilities of some produce, including asparagus. Other veggies that get better after a short bout in the steam: beets, okra, carrots, eggplant, green beans, and cauliflower. Researchers think steaming these veggies may help them do a better job of binding bile acids, which means your liver needs to use up more LDL cholesterol into order to make bile. That translates into 22 - March 2012 less circulating LDL in your bloodstream. Oatmeal - Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which reduces your lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL), the “bad” cholesterol. Soluble fiber is also found in such foods as kidney beans, apples, pears, barley and prunes. Soluble fiber can reduce the absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream. Five to 10 grams or more of soluble fiber a day decreases your total and LDL cholesterol. Eating 1 1/2 cups of cooked oatmeal provides 6 grams of fiber. If you add fruit, such as bananas, you’ll add about 4 more grams of fiber. To mix it up a little, try steelcut oatmeal or cold cereal made with oatmeal or oat bran. Pinto Beans - a very good source of cholesterol-lowering fiber, as are most other beans. In addition to lowering cholesterol, pinto beans’ high fiber content prevents blood sugar levels from rising too rapidly after a meal, making these beans an especially good choice for individuals with diabetes, insulin resistance or hypoglycemia. When combined with whole grains such as brown rice, pinto beans provide virtually fatfree, high quality protein. But this is far from all pinto beans have to offer. Pinto beans are also an excellent source of molybdenum, a very good source of folate, and a good source of protein and vitamin B1 as well as the minerals phosphorus, iron, magnesium, manganese, and potassium. CHARtER CLUB CORNER & SpECIAL INtERESt PoKer CluB The Sun City Aliante Poker Club meets every Wednesday and Friday at 5 p.m. We welcome new and former players. We play Texas Hold’em and “Dealer’s Choice.” If you’re new to Texas Hold’em or the Poker Club, we have a “newbie” orientation on the first Wednesday of the month (4-5 pm). The Poker Club is a great way to meet and socialize with your neighbors. Hope to see you there. Veterans CluB Greetings friends and neighbor! On behalf of the Veterans Club, I’m very pleased to announce the pancake breakfast we hosted on January 14 was a resounding success. We served about 166 people, and we were able to donate $541 to the USO for their work. Thank you all very much for your support. We are planning another breakfast in October, and will donate the proceeds to another worthy cause. Special thanks to all who volunteered their time and talents for this fun event. In February, 49 veterans and spouses enjoyed a wonderful trip to Nellis Air Force Base, where we met “The Thunderbirds.” A big thank you to Bob Russ for doing all the legwork to put this trip together. We are planning more exciting events in the future; our calendar for 2012 is coming together, and we’ll give you the dates as we finalize them. Please don’t forget the “Veterans stand down” will take place on March 21-22. The event features many needed services for homeless veterans. The Life Style Committee has given me permission to go ahead with the creation of a Karaoke Club for the residents of our community. The first order of business to get started is to get an accurate list of all those residents who would like to be included in the list of club members. Although many of you signed up originally on the interest sheet (available at the Monitor’s desk), some of the contact information is very hard to read and may have changed over the past year. I am requesting everyone with interest in joining the Karaoke Club of SCAL to please submit their contact information to me. Once I’ve collected the required information, I’ll contact you all, and we’ll get together for our first meeting and decide how we’d like to go forward with the club. Your suggestions will be very important in our decisions as to how we want to conduct each singing session and where you’d like to actually have our club meeting. Bill Hawkins tennis CluB Congratulations to sally dobson and all of the Pickleball players on becoming one of the newest sanctioned clubs here in Sun City Aliante. We are happy to share our courts with such an enthusiastic group of players. All of our tennis players can now shed some of those layers of clothing, as winter is over and the mornings are a bit warmer. Our starting time for Saturday Club Day remains at 8 a.m. for one more month, and then we’ll move to 7:30 a.m. on April 1. The same holds true for Tuesday and Thursday mornings. You can always come earlier if you wish. We use our ball machine regularly, and hope to have a backboard installed on the court soon. Don’t forget to check in each time you play, and have your cards scanned at the monitor’s desk. Questions? Call or E-mail me, Larry Rothstein, 649-8766 and lilandlar@aol.com. seniors assisting seniors Greeting Neighbors: January 2012 was our most active month in the community for Seniors Assisting Seniors (SAS) with a total of 12 service calls. During the past 10 months, SAS made 62 service calls with 15 volunteers. We usually respond within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the need. The dreaded smoke alarm or CO2 detector beeping generates an immediate response, if at all possible. We have picked up and delivered 18 pieces of equipment. We supply the equipment and batteries, along with the service for free. Residents are required to provide the air conditioning filters, light bulbs and salt for the water softeners. SAS, in coordination with Neighborhood Watch, will begin replacing burned-out address light bulbs at no charge in March. Our goal is to ensure all the address lights in our community are working. These lights are important to help others find your home at night. If you have a need, please do not hesitate to call SAS at 702-981-3149. We are here to serve our residents.
