Xi Xin Zhu’s story is the hidden face of China’s
economic miracle, of the China that managed
to pull off the most spectacular economic shift
in the twentieth century, even as it upheld
its authoritarian state. A China that not only
offers little recourse to its citizens, but
that often brutalizes people who are victims
of injustice, corruption, or even natural
disasters. In almost five years of journalism
in China, it is a face I have seen many times.
Michel Cormier
The Legacy of Tiananmen Square
More than 20 years
after the Tiananmen
Square uprising,
Michel Cormier, CBC
Television’s former
China correspondent,
examines the stillborn
legacy of the
Tiananmen Square
student protests led
by Wang Dan and
other activists in
the spring of 1989.
The Legacy of Tiananmen Square
MiCHel CoRMieR
With the loosening of restrictions on the Chinese economy
in the 1980s and 1990s and the rise of the middle class,
many observers thought that Western-style democracy
would soon follow. instead, China has adopted its own
version, with a market-driven economy where actions that
might call into question the decisions of the governing party
are strictly forbidden.
in this fascinating account, Cormier chronicles numerous
failed attempts to bring democracy to China in the last
century, starting with a handful of brave souls who tried to
move China towards a constitutional monarchy at the turn of
the century and peaking with the student uprising of 1989.
using historical research (including surprising transcripts
from Party meetings) and candid interviews with many
of the dissi dents — some now living in exile, others under
house arrest in China — Cormier tells the very human story
of real people struggling for human rights and freedoms.
MiCHel CoRMieR was the CBC and Radio-Canada television
correspondent in China from 2006 to 2010, where he
followed China’s meteoric rise as an economic superpower.
Cormier was recently appointed executive director of news
and current affairs for Radio-Canada. He is the author of
several books, including La Russie de mes illusions, shortlisted
for the Governor General’s award in 2007.
The Legacy of Tiananmen Square was originally published in
French as Les héritiers de Tiananmen. This updated edition
was translated by Jonathan Kaplansky.
Almost a Great Escape
A Found Story
TYleR TRaFFoRD
Following his mother’s death in 2004, Tyler Trafford discovers
an album of old letters and creased photographs that reveal
a mother he never knew, a man he’s never heard of, and a
love affair doomed by class and circumstance. The letters are
from Jens Müller, a Norwegian pilot who trained in Canada
during the early days of World War ii, one of only three
prisoners who would make it home after “The Great escape”.
in Almost a Great Escape, Trafford takes us on a journey
of emotional discovery and dramatic disclosure as he
reconstructs his mother’s life, from her youth as a wealthy
Montreal debutante to her final days as a broken but
unbent casualty of a loveless marriage. His search for
answers takes him across Canada and then across the ocean
to Norway, hoping to learn more about the mystery of this
secret relationship. Written with a fluidity fueled by heartwrenching
honesty, Trafford’s unconventional memoir
confirms that while you can survive your past, you can
never escape from it.
Almost a Great Escape includes photographs as well as
excerpts and reproductions of telegrams and letters Jens
sent from england and stalag luft iii.
TYleR TRaFFoRD worked for many years as a reporter and
editor first with the Calgary Herald, then in australia with the
Australian and later with the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel.
When he returned to Canada, be began writing biographies,
histories, and works of fiction, including The Story of Blue Eye,
which was shortlisted for the 2005 Grant Mcewan authors
award. He now divides his time between Calgary and his
studio on the oldman River near Pincher Creek, alberta.
When a man kills
in the name of God,
who is to blame?
8 | TRUE CRIME | SPRING 2013
The Ballad of Jacob Peck
DeBRa KoMaR
on a frigid February evening in 1805, amos Babcock brutally
murdered Mercy Hall. Believing that he was being instructed
by God, Babcock stabbed and disembowelled his own sister,
before dumping her lifeless body in a rural New Brunswick
snowbank.
The Ballad of Jacob Peck is the tragic and fascinating story of
how isolation, duplicity, and religious mania turned impoverished,
hard-working people violent, leading to a murder and
an execution. Babcock was hanged for the murder of his sister,
but in her meticulously researched book, Debra Komar shows
that itinerant preacher Jacob Peck should have swung right
beside him. The mystery lies not in the whodunit, but rather
in a lingering question: should Jacob Peck, whose incendiary
sermons directly contributed to the killing, have been charged
with the murder of Mercy Hall?
in this epic saga, media accounts of what happened in the
aftermath of the murder have taken on a life all their own, one
built of half-truths, conjecture, and narrative devices designed
to titillate, if not inform.
a forensic investigation of a crime from the Canadian frontier,
the tale of Jacob Peck, amos Babcock, and Mercy Hall remains
as controversial and riveting today as it was more than two
hundred years ago.
DeBRa KoMaR has worked as a forensic anthropologist
in the us, uK, and Canada for over twenty years. she has
investigated human-rights violations resulting in violent
deaths for the united Nations and Physicians for Human
Rights, testified as an expert witness in The Hague and
across North america, and authored the authoritative Forensic
Anthropology: Contemporary Theory and Practice for oxford
university Press.
For Éléna, Douglas unlocked his heart.
Shyly at first, then with confidence,
like a window opening slowly onto the
by one, freed from the torment where
he’d kept them closed up.
The Douglas Notebooks
A Fable
CHRisTiNe eDDie, translated by sHeila FisCHMaN
Roman was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. at 18,
he leaves his family for a home in the forest, learning
to live off the land rather than his family’s wealth. éléna
flees a house of blood and mayhem, taking refuge in a
monastery and later in the rustic village of Rivière-auxoies.
one day, while walking in the woods, éléna hears
the melody of a clarinet and comes across Roman, who
calls himself starling. éléna renames him Douglas, for the
strongest and most spectacular of trees.
Fade to black.
When the story takes up again, Douglas has returned to
the forest and his daughter Rose is in the village under
the care of others. éléna is gone. From these disparate
threads, Christine eddie tenderly weaves a fable for
our time and for all times. as the years pass, the story
broadens to capture others in its elegant web — a doctor
with a bruised heart, a pharmacist who may be a witch,
and a teacher with dark secrets. Together they raise this
child with the mysterious heritage, transforming this
story into an ode to friendship and family, a sonnet on our
relationship with nature, and an elegy to love and passion.
CHRisTiNe eDDie was born in France, grew up in
New Brunswick, and now lives in Québec. The French
edition of The Douglas Notebooks won the 2008 Prix
France-Québec, the 2009 Prix senghor du Premier Roman
francophone, and the 2010 Prix du Club des irrésistibles.
Under Budapest
ailsa KaY
ailsa Kay lays out the literary equivalent of a jigsaw puzzle
in Under Budapest, bringing into stark relief the triumphs,
calamities, and desperation of two North american
Hungarian families and those whose lives they’ve touched.
There’s agnes and Tibor, mother and son, travelling to
Hungary for reasons they keep to themselves, he to recover
from a disastrous love affair, she to search for a sister gone
missing during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. There’s
Janos, a self-styled player and petty thug, who schemes to
make it rich in post-communist Hungary. and there’s Gyula
and Zsofi, caught up in a revolution that will change the
face of Hungary forever. Their lives are all connected by a
conflagration of events: the legacy of wartime violence, past
allegiances, long-buried rivalries, and secrets from the past.
Through riveting narratives that spring back and forth
through time, Under Budapest captures the drama and
ravages of the Hungarian Revolution and the eras that
followed. a dark ode to memory, Kay’s intimate spectacle
demonstrates that actions have consequences, that the past
cannot be shaken, that all events can carry the possibility of
repercussion.
ailsa KaY fell in love with Budapest on a 2004 visit and
has since lived there off and on for short intervals. she has
taught writing at college and university where she has
learned from her students to laugh a lot, swear occasionally,
and always risk that leap of faith. Kay’s short fiction has
appeared in literary journals such as Exile and The New
Quarterly. after twenty years in Toronto, she recently
returned to her hometown of Fergus, ontario. Under
Budapest is her first novel.
The House is Still Standing
aDRieNNe BaRReTT
The House is Still Standing is peopled with charlatans,
gingerbread men, children, and savants — the thousands
and the particular. adrienne Barrett builds this nimble first
collection with a supple craft. The poems deke and swerve,
from the wry to the theatrical to the intimate. Whether riffing
on the secret identities of public intellectuals and pop icons
or penning elegiac verse, Barrett’s voice is strong, anchored,
inviting. although she takes her readers through both
“substance / and its downfall,” in the end, the structure is
sound; she is holding it up.
aDRieNNe BaRReTT is a writer and bricklayer. a graduate of
Trent university and the university of British Columbia, she
has seen her poetry published in Arc, Prairie Fire, and The
Carmelita McGrath’s Escape Velocity — the long awaited
follow-up to her atlantic Poetry Prize-winning collection
To the New World — culls overlooked fragments from our
domestic lives and ferries them on unpredictable journeys.
a conversation with a telemarketer becomes a monologue
on overcoming loss, stray animals provoke cautionary tales
shared between generations of women, and junk mail
fosters a meditation on necessity, debt, and the inevitability
of one’s passing. From the elegiac, to the playful, to the
meditative, McGrath effortlessly shifts from a natural
refinement to a near breathless elegance. Well worth the
wait, Escape Velocity marks the return of McGrath’s receptive
intelligence, gathering strength and taking flight.
Looking back over 174 years, it is difficult
to understand why the Aroostook Valley,
where a minor border crisis occurred in
the depths of winter, could have become
a flashpoint in relations between Britain
and the United States. Yet, it was.
The Aroostook War of 1839
GaRY CaMPBell
a little known episode in North america’s history, the 1839
aroostook War was an undeclared war with no actual fighting.
it had its roots in the 1783 Treaty of Paris, which ended the
american Revolutionary War but left the border of Maine
(then part of Massachusetts) and British North america
unsettled, and in the War of 1812, when parts of northern
Maine were occupied by Britain.
Fearing a negotiated border would negatively affect
their claim for the disputed territory, Maine occupied the
aroostook River valley in early 1839. British regulars, New
Brunswick militia, and Maine militia were then deployed in
the dead of winter, as the kindling was laid for a third major
anglo-american conflagration. eventually, cooler heads
prevailed, although they did not deter a number of skirmishes
between the Maine land agent posses and a loosely
organized group of New Brunswick lumbermen. a complex
story of friction, greed, land grabs, and rivalry, this border
dispute which nearly resulted in war was eventually settled
by the ashburton-Webster Treaty of 1842.
Major (Retired) W.e. (Gary) CaMPBell served for over fortytwo
years in the Canadian Forces and has a passion for military
history. He is the author of The Road to Canada: The Grand
Communications Route from Saint John to Quebec (volume 5).
The Aroostook War is volume 20 in the New Brunswick Military
Heritage series.
