fall; the 2009 session lasted two weeks and comprisedtalks by the heads of core facilities and investigatorsfrom our research programs. Additionally,retreats from students of the MDC and FMP wereheld in 2008 and 2009, organized by the students andthe PhD programs.The MDC is mainly financed by public resources. It istherefore highly motivated to raise awareness of theinstitute among non-scientists, who will eventuallybe affected by our work and the applications it produces.In additions, these efforts are essential in givingyoung people a first-hand look at science and,hopefully, stimulating many of them to choose a scientificcareer. A major activity is the Gläsernes Labor,operated by the BBB Management GmbH on theBerlin-Buch campus with significant support fromthe MDC. It continues to welcome huge numbers ofvisitors, particularly school children, for hands-onexperiments in the lab and an encounter with modernbiology. In 2008 the teaching labs were fullybooked, receiving over 10,000 pupils and theirteachers.Our very active press office disseminates news aboutour findings to the media and coordinates our interactionswith the public in that regard. The publicationof Geneticists in Berlin-Buch, a collection of articlesabout three famous scientists associated with thecampus, explores our rich history. Finally, we arebringing out other unique publications to give theresearch community and the wider public insightsinto work and life on our campus. 2008 saw the publicationof the book Translations: From today’s scienceto tomorrow’s medicine in Berlin-Buch, a large, coffeetablebook with lavish photographs and a wide rangeof easy-to-understand stories from our current work.A last remarkTo conclude, I would like to emphasize that it hasbeen a pleasure – and a great challenge – to assumethe directorship of a thriving, growing. “Molecularmedicine” and “translational research” are buzzwordsthat can be heard across the world. As outlined above,at the MDC we are pursuing these themes in a verydynamic, flexible and concrete way. As we make thetransition from the current size and scope of ourMarkus Landthaler, Rockefeller University, New York, istder erste Nachwuchsgruppenleiter, der für das BIMSBgewonnen werden konnte.Die Auswahl exzellenter Doktorstudenten erfolgt amMDC über ein strenges Auswahlverfahren nach internationalerAusschreibung. Unser PhD-Programm bietetden Doktoranden mehrere Vorlesungsreihen, Kurseund Seminare, Kongressteilnahmen, Forschungsaufenthaltein anderen Laboren und vieles mehr. Ende 2009erfolgte bereits die achte Ausschreibung unseres PhD-Programms, das wir gemeinsam mit der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2001 gestartet haben. Das MDChat für alle Doktoranden, die ab Juli 2006 mit ihrerArbeit am MDC begonnen haben, ein einheitliches Curriculumetabliert. Mit zentralen Mitteln der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft, die das MDC in den letzten zwei Jahrenfür drei Programme einwerben konnte, stehen nun insgesamt7,2 Mio. € über eine Laufzeit von insgesamt 6Jahren zusätzlich für eine strukturierte Ausbildung zurVerfügung. Zu diesen Programmen gehören die Helmholtz-Graduiertenschule„Molecular Cell Biology“, dasHelmholtz-Kolleg „Molecular Neurobiology“ und dasHelmholtz-Kolleg “Translational Cardiovascular andMetabolic Medicine – TransCard“. Im Gegensatz zu denKollegs, die thematisch fokussiert sind, ist die Graduiertenschuleals disziplinübergreifende Dachstrukturangelegt. Wie in den Jahren zuvor wurden auch in2008 und 2009 PhD-Retreats gemeinsam von Doktorandendes MDC und FMP organisiert.Das MDC wird vorwiegend mit öffentlichen Mittelnfinanziert. Wir sind deshalb sehr daran interessiert, derÖffentlichkeit die Ergebnisse unserer Arbeit näher zubringen. Wir hoffen auf diesem Weg, jungen Menscheneinen Einblick in die Wissenschaft aus erster Hand zubieten und sie zu einer wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn zuermutigen.Eine wichtige Aktivität ist hierbei die Unterstützungdes Gläsernen Labors, das auf dem Bucher Campus vonder BBB Management GmbH betrieben wird. Es wirdvor allem von Schulkindern besucht, die mit ersteneigenen molekularbiologischen Experimenten einenEinblick in die moderne Biologie erhalten. 2008 und2009 war das angebotene Programm durch ca. 10.000Schülerinnen und Schüler und ihren Lehrkräften vollständigausgebucht.XXII Director's introduction
