We aim at cultivating theadvanced design pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and meeting the needs <strong>of</strong> global and nationaleconomic development. Simultaneously the college is in the position <strong>of</strong>focusing on the research and pr<strong>of</strong>essional training <strong>of</strong> sustainable environmentdesign, urban design, architectural design, industrial design, creative design,furniture and interior design, and interactive media design to compete with thedomestic and international industries.Responding to the responsibilities for a globalized society, the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Design</strong> is aiming for the formation <strong>of</strong> an outstanding base <strong>of</strong> knowledge tostrengthen scholarly exchange with international design organizations andacademic institutes, and to improve research and education <strong>of</strong> design, to carryout teaching and research, and to maintain an intimate tie with the government,industries, and research institutions so as to promote the government’spolicies <strong>of</strong> upgrading all industries, and to promote sustainable environmentmanagement so as to maintain healthy and comfortable living environments.The <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Design</strong> is the place where the individual creativity <strong>of</strong> a studentcan be nurtured in a framework that is humanistically, socially, artistically andenvironmentally responsible. We <strong>of</strong>fer graduate degree program in the areas<strong>of</strong> creative and sustainable architecture studies which including environmentaland urban design, building technology, design technology, history, theory andpractice, and the visual design. In order to cultivate pr<strong>of</strong>essionals with abilities<strong>of</strong> integrated design studies particularly in architecture, the program is mainlysupported by an inter-department training <strong>of</strong> architecture and industrial design,1


which cut across the discipline groups are our devoted teaching,interdisciplinary training, and the remarkable faculty.Prospective students to this international program are welcome to join us. Thisprogram is fully supported by all the faculty members, facilities <strong>of</strong> the college.To view all currently degrees that the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Design</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers, see thefollowing chart:■ The Program OverviewThe international graduate degree program is designed specifically forpreparing international students for opportunities <strong>of</strong> working in the local andglobal societies. Both Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Architecture Studies and Ph.D.degree programs are <strong>of</strong>fered. The program is conducted by a faculty bodyconsisting <strong>of</strong> members with pr<strong>of</strong>essional experience and outstanding recordsin teaching and research. All courses <strong>of</strong>fered in this program are taught inEnglish. Financial support includes tuition waiver, fellowship, and researchassistantship are available. The program focuses on research methodology,2


design technology, architecture design, creative design forum, urban planningtheory and practice, environmental planning and design, innovative designthinking, urban and cultural revitalization, architectural seminar on special topic,building technology, renewal and reuse, visual design and architecture.The Ph.D. degree program prepares students for a variety <strong>of</strong> careers in designresearch, advanced development, and academia. Students admitted into thedoctoral program will work closely with one faculty advisor in his or herresearch area to develop a study plan, and will be requested to carry outrequired coursework, qualifying paper, general examination, and dissertationresearch, writing, and defense.The Master degree program provides flexible and pragmatic training to thestudents interested in a career in architecture design, urban and environmentaldesign, and further study. The Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Architecture Studies isdesignated as a two-year program <strong>of</strong> advanced study in architecture. It isfounded on research in architecture as a discipline and as a practice. We putemphasis on quality rather than on quantity, and inquiry into creativity,sustainability and contemporary problems <strong>of</strong> architectural design and practicein Taiwan, Asia and around the world.Students in the program are encouraged to take relevant courses in theprogram and other programs in the university.■ The FacultyThe <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Design</strong> currently <strong>of</strong>fers comprehensive studies includingDepartment <strong>of</strong> Industrial <strong>Design</strong>, Department <strong>of</strong> Architecture, GraduateInstitute <strong>of</strong> Architecture and Urban <strong>Design</strong>, Undergraduate Program <strong>of</strong>Creative <strong>Design</strong>, Graduate Institute <strong>of</strong> Innovation and <strong>Design</strong>, GraduateInstitute <strong>of</strong> Interactive Media <strong>Design</strong>, Graduate Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Design</strong>. It <strong>of</strong>fersthree master programs, three undergraduate programs and one doctoralprogram. For promoting the capacity <strong>of</strong> research and the design teachingresources integrate effectively, the college establishes three research centers;they are Research Center for Sustainable Environment and Green Building,Taiwan Cultural Fine-works <strong>Design</strong> Teaching Resources Center and Centerfor Innovative <strong>Design</strong> & Knowledge Management.The <strong>College</strong> currently has a network <strong>of</strong> related academic departments such asin Britain, America, Germany, Australia, Italy, Japan, Thailand, Mainland Chinaand elsewhere with which it has established research links and joint training.3


The aim <strong>of</strong> all curricula in the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Design</strong> is to develop and integrate thehighly pr<strong>of</strong>essional designer's attention and sensitivity in sustainability,ecology, planning, landscape, architecture, engineering, product, interior,innovation and consultation so as to keep abreast with the global trend.On the basis <strong>of</strong> our distinguished records on integrated design in the college,the international graduate degree program boasts a faculty body. Under theirguidance, students <strong>of</strong> the international program will receive a substantialtraining both in sustainable architecture design and cultivate a globalcompetitiveness in the international society.Our Full-time faculty all hired according to not only the qualificationrequirements established by the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Education, but also a great deal <strong>of</strong>design pr<strong>of</strong>essional experience. In addition, we also have more than fiftypart-time faculty members, all practicing pr<strong>of</strong>essionals from the fields <strong>of</strong>architecture design, urban design, industrial design, interior design, and otherdesign related pr<strong>of</strong>essions around <strong>Taipei</strong> District. A wide range <strong>of</strong> programs leading toBachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees are <strong>of</strong>fered by the <strong>College</strong>. Currentlythere are around 20 Ph.D. and 360 Master graduate students enrolled in thecollege.7


Located in downtown <strong>Taipei</strong>, NTUT is one <strong>of</strong> the most prestigious universitiesin Taiwan. NTUT was founded in 1912. With outstanding reputation inpr<strong>of</strong>essional education, NTUT is consistently ranked in the top ten by the 1000largest companies in Taiwan.■ Financial AidThe following financial aid is <strong>of</strong>fered for students admitted to this program.1. Tuition is waived for the first year.2. Fellowship <strong>of</strong> $10,000 NT (approximately $320 USD) per month is grantedfor the first year.3. After the first year, the fellowship (including tuition waiver), researchassistantship and teaching assistantship will be granted based on theacademic and research performance. Normally, the fellowship duration is 2years for MS program and 4 years for Ph.D. program.■ Qualifications and Applications1.
