FirstEnergy CorporationFirstEnergy Corporation (FirstEnergy) is a holding company with seven electric utility operatingcompanies, comprising the nation's fifth largest investor-owned electric system, serving 4.5 millioncustomers within 36,100 square miles of Ohio, <strong>Pennsylvania</strong> and New Jersey. Its generationsubsidiaries control more than 14,200 MW of capacity (56 percent coal and 28 percent nuclear).The three operating companies in <strong>Pennsylvania</strong> include Metropolitan Edison Company,<strong>Pennsylvania</strong> Electric Company and <strong>Pennsylvania</strong> Power Company. See Figure 29.Figure 29 FirstEnergy service territoryOn May 14, <strong>2010</strong>, FirstEnergy, West Penn Power Company and TrailCo filed a joint applicationwith the <strong>Commission</strong>, at Docket No. A-<strong>2010</strong>-2176520, to obtain approval for the merger ofAllegheny Energy, Inc. with a wholly-owned subsidiary of First Energy. The combined companywill retain the FirstEnergy name and be headquartered in Akron, Ohio. If approved, thetransaction, expected to be completed early in 2011, will result in an energy provider with $16billion in annual revenues, 10 regulated EDCs operating in seven states, 20,000 miles of highvoltagetransmission lines, 24,000 MW of generating capacity and more than 2,200 MW ofrenewable energy.Metropolitan Edison CompanyMetropolitan Edison Company (Met-Ed), asubsidiary of FirstEnergy, provides service to551,283 electric utility customers in all or portionsof 14 counties in Eastern and Southcentral<strong>Pennsylvania</strong>. In 2009, Met-Ed had total energysales of 13,490 GWh—down 5.3 percent from2008. Residential sales dominated Met-Ed’smarket with 40.4 percent of total sales, followed by commercial (33.9 percent) and industrial (25.5percent). Declines in sales were seen in all customer segments, with the largest decline in theindustrial sector at 10.2 percent.
