730According to the artist, the triptych, was a private commission. Below isher comment & explanation of the work: “Conceptually it took a cynical lookat Delacroix's painting 'Liberty leading the people' - the one with Mariannebare breasted amongst the people, the July revolution of 1830 as well as andperhaps more so, an etching by Kathe Kollwitz from the weavers revoltportfolio called "aufruht" - [the uprising]. My work is perhaps closer, formally,to this one as a phantom Liberty figure floats above the rioters. But inanycase, my drawing was about the idea of revolution not happening orhaving any chance if people just sit back and do nothing- “No hope”, if nothope, you need guts and with neither guts nor hope, there would certainly beno glory. Both sources were images meant to spur the people on to rise up againsttyranny. My image was cynically directed at the patron who commissioned it.The sequence of panels are as follows: 1. Naked man with trumpet on theleft, 2. Liberty committing Harri Kiri in the middle and 3. the little drummer girlwith prosthesis on the right- the building behind her with the dome was afictitious attempt to do a birds’ eye view on the union buildings, thus locatingit within a South African context.” - Diane Victor, 201040 000 -60 000CONDITIONS OF AUCTION & IMPORTANT NOTICES FOR THE PURCHASER1.
