The late J Ball being the current owners grandfather.She was supplied as a 4 3/4 ton compound steam tractor with convertible parts to make it into an 8ton roller and she will be sold with her pair of rear rolls and front roll. At that time James Ball was ageneral haulage contractor, civil engineer and supplier of ballast and the engine had a dualpurpose; when not equipped as a road roller laying roads, she was fitted with the tractor wheels forhaulage duties. She was laid up in 1947 in the yard at Bullen Road, Ryde until the late 1970’s/80’swhen restoration commenced and a new boiler and firebox was constructed by M Filer of Arreton,Isle of Wight and new tractor wheels fabricated using the original centres, new rubber tyres and theentire engine was re-built as required, no expense was spared. LOTS 715 TO 719 THE BALL FAMILY COLLECTION OF STEAM ENGINESThe following engine is from the Ball Family Collection -Contractors, entrepreneurs & steam enthusiasts of the Isle of WightLot 719 - Fowler D2 Compound Convertible Steam Tractor “Lettuce”Engine No 7769, Registration No HC 2431Built in 1897 by John Fowler & Co, Leeds this engine was exhibited on Fowlers stand at the RoyalShow at Reading in 1897 and is finished in the unusual colour scheme which was Fowler’s showcolours for that period. It is believed that she is the sole survivor of sixteen engines that werebrought out in this livery. She gained the name “Lettuce” because of her colour scheme. Lettucewas used commercially for general contracting works until 1940 when she was pensioned off intopreservation by her then owner Mr Green of Bucks.
