Thebeautiful rolling hills andsoft surface of the golf course provide an outstanding trainingsite for our cross country runners. Few collegiate programs inthe country can claim to have a better setting to start theirtraining week.OAKHURST FORESTPRESERVEThe Oakhurst ForestPreserve is locatedseven-and-a-half milesfrom campus. It servesas the training area forWednesday afternoonpractices and is the venuefor the <strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong> – Spartan XC Classic held in earlySeptember. Oakhurst trails offer ideal training surfaces. Themowed grass, dirt forest and crushed limestone trails provideAU runners with a scenic setting as they train for competition.VIRGIL L. GILMAN TRAILThe Virgil L. Gilman Trail,located a half mile fromthe <strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong>campus, serves as a regulartraining site for the crosscountry teams. The treelinedasphalt trail has halfmilemarkers, and runners can either take the west or east trail.The west route takes runners 1.5 miles to the newlyconstructed bridge over Orchard Road. After crossing OrchardRoad, the trail connects to an abandoned railroad right of wayleading to Bliss Woods and ending at Waubonsee CommunityCollege.The east trail takes runners across the Fox River, ending atOhio Street. Though established initially to prepare graduatesfor ministry, the institution soon adopted a broader mission and moved to anew campus on the western edge of the nearby community of <strong>Aurora</strong>. With thischange came a different name and a growing enrollment. In 1985, the institutionwas rechristened <strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong>.In 1992, the <strong>Aurora</strong> and George Williams College traditions blended when thetwo institutions entered into the affiliation agreement that paved the way for amerger eight years later.Today <strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong> is accredited by the Higher Learning Commissionof the North Central Association to award degrees at the baccalaureate, master’s,and doctoral levels. The institution enrolls approximately 4,000 degree-seekingstudents a year on its Illinois and Wisconsin campuses. AU offers its undergraduatesa wide range of on- and off-campus learning experiences. The university also fields18 NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic teams. Last year, the residential, conferenceand academic facility, developed in partnership with Children’s OncologyServices Inc., opened.
