Dear Parents,
I
continue to be amazed at the
staff, students, and parents of
Paxtonia Elementary School! We
are blessed with dedicated teachers,
enthusiastic students, and
supportive parents. I am confident
that we will more than prove our
“academic worth” on the upcoming
PSSA tests. Equally important to
me, I am also confident that we
will continue to prove our “social
worth” through our charitable
events and by treating each other
the way we would want to be
treated.

Just a Personal Observation
After more than 20 years working
in elementary schools, I’ve
observed that students who have
access to electronic equipment in
their bedrooms (i.e., TV, cell phone,
computer or hand-held games)
average less sleep and lower
grades than their classmates who
get a good night’s sleep without the
t e m p t a t i o n o f e l e c t r o n i c
distractions.

built the Kids $mart
Start program to help parents
raise financially literate
children. This presentation
will give parents a roadmap to
help establish or reinforce their own
money values while introducing
children to the concept of saving
money.

Steven Courtney Concerts - March 11th
O n March 11th, Paxtonia welcomes Steven Courtney.
His school assembly concerts go far beyond entertaining
by providing an "upbeat" look at positive social behavior
and being a kid. Songs like "My Yo-Yo" and "If The World
Was Filled with Love" bring a fresh sense of fun and joy to
learning. Steven's popular songs like "Steven the Pirate"
and "Nice Little House" spark the imagination of the young
to dream and be creative. Concert times are 1:45 pm (K-2)
and 2:45 pm (3-5).

of community members, parents,

assistance in promoting the Parent
/Community Information Night
scheduled for April 15, 2010 at 6:30
pm at Central Dauphin East High
School.
Science Night In Review
n the evening of Friday,
O February 19th, the Science
Night program at Paxtonia was held.
We had many exhibits return
including The Hershey Company,
the Lower Paxton Police, Natural
Gas, Pennsylvania Wildlife Management,
Rocks and Minerals, Drayer
Physical Therapy, Susquehanna
Service Dogs, HACC, Strokes, and
our 5th grade Science students
headed by Ms. Wevodau.
New exhibits this year included
N u t r i t i o n , S o l a r E n e r g y ,
Environmental Science and the
Keystone Radio Control Society.
This year, our experiments included
CSI Paxtonia, Part of Your Car?,
Defying Gravity, Talking by
Telegraph, and Seeing is Believing. I

donations.

culture, safety in schools and safely
surfing the internet. Please invite

Friendship Community Center
on Sunday, March 28th from
6:15-8:15 pm. Your child will
soon be bringing home information
to sign up and purchase
tickets. Tickets are $5 per
person and your child must be
accompanied by a responsible
adult. In order to participate,
you must also fill out and sign
the Friendship Center’s
Release and Waiver of Liability
Agreement which will be
provided to you after sign-ups.

hat is bullying, anyway?
W “Bullying” is another name
for harassment. Bullying can be
physical—one or more students
hurting another. More often,
bullying is verbal and includes
persistent threatening, teasing,
ridicule or talking about another
person.
What should you tell your child
if they are being bullied? Parents
may tell their children to strike
back at bullies. Usually, that
creates more problems than it
solves. If your child is being
bullied, let them know they aren’t
helpless. Here are some things
they can try that may stop the
bullying:
�� Tell a friend. Ask your friend
to help you—it’s tougher for a bully
to pick on a person who has someone
there for support.
�� Walk away. It’s harder to bully
someone who won’t stand still to
listen.
�� Chill out. Bullies seem to

show any emotion. Practice by

to. It’s no fun to bully someone
who doesn’t seem to care.
�� Try not to be alone in places
where the bully picks on you. This
may mean you need to sit in a
different place on the bus or in the
cafeteria. Or find a different place
to stand in line.
�� Don’t fight back. Usually,
bullies are bigger and stronger
than you are. If you try to fight,
you’ll probably get clobbered. You
could make the situation worse.
Or you could even get blamed for
starting the fight.
�� Write it down. Keep track of
what happened—dates, times,
places. Write down exactly what
the bully says. When you are
ready to tell an adult, you’ll have
specifics.

bullying by yourself,
or even with
the help of
friends. So if
you’ve tried some of the things on
the list and the bullying hasn’t
stopped, it’s time for you to tell an
adult.
Nobody likes to admit they’re
being bullied. And some kids think
they’re being a “tattletale” if they
tell an adult. That’s not true. Kids
have a right to feel and be safe
from bullying. Often a bully has
more than one victim, so if you
don’t tell, the bully will just keep
on harassing other people, too.
