Nativity Preparatory School is an accredited, Jesuit middle school dedicated to providing a quality,
tuition-free education to boys of all faiths from low-income families residing in Boston’s inner city
neighborhoods. Staffed by lay volunteers and Jesuits who work closely with students’ families, the
school provides an academically challenging and highly structured environment for boys who have
demonstrated the potential and the desire to handle a demanding academic program designed to
prepare them for success in high school and in college. We work to inspire in students a love of
learning, an awareness of their own interests and ideas, a fundamental understanding of culture,
and an abiding sense of responsibility to their community.
In the Jesuit tradition, the school promotes the academic, social, and athletic growth of our students
to develop their whole character. This tradition inspires teachers to care for each student individually,
and teaches students to accept, respect, and care for each other.

After studying the New Testament in religion class, any one of our 7th graders could explain to you that the writer of
Luke’s Gospel tells the Nativity story with a twist. Luke’s Gospel emphasizes that Jesus was born in a cold, dark stable
where he was visited by shepherds, the outcasts and dregs of society. Today, Luke’s renowned stable might take the
shape of a deserted city parking garage or a dangerous subway station near a gang infested public housing project.
In every age God chooses to be born into poverty so that all who dwell in darkness will come to know the light of God’s
love and friendship.
Jesus’ mission to bring light to the dark corners of the world is the same mission that guides all our efforts at Nativity
Prep. Our school was “born” to bring light and hope to boys who dwell in the dangerous neighborhoods of a city where
gang violence, drugs and a high school graduation rate of 60% discourage boys from imagining themselves as the
loving, generous men they were created to be. Nativity Prep is a beacon of light that helps these boys from Boston
navigate troubled waters and imagine themselves as men for others.
If you were to spend a day at Nativity Prep this winter, you would see boys from Boston’s toughest neighborhoods
broadening their minds with books by John Steinbeck and Jerry Spinelli. You would witness them wrestling with the
Pythagorean theorem and the scientific method. You would hear them practicing the Ibo rhythm on the African drum,
and rehearsing their lines from the school’s latest drama production. You might see them boarding a school van on their
way to play in a basketball tournament or to perform a few hours of community service at a local homeless shelter.
On your visit to Nativity you would witness a whirlwind of activity from dawn until dusk – activity that builds character,
confidence, and courage.

“Blessed To Be a Blessing”

Ah – the “Golden Years”, a stage of life typically
understood to be filled with relaxation, travel, and
ample leisure time to indulge in a long delayed
hobby. Nothing could be further from the truth for
Nativity’s new math teacher, Joseph Galeota. A lifelong
educator, Joe joined our faculty this fall. His
journey to Nativity – in his own words – is below:
“Following a circuitous route that took me from
Boston College High School, to The Josephite
Fathers Seminary, to Catholic University, I became a
member of National Teacher Corps in the late
1960’s. As a member of this cutting-edge group, I
taught in the District of Columbia Public Schools for
a number of years before returning to Boston in
1974. I taught in various Boston schools until 1981,
until massive BPS lay-offs forced me to retool my
career as a technical writer for Raytheon and
Computervision.
I was delighted to return to BPS in 1986, as a
7th-8th grade math teacher at Dorchester’s Frank V.
Thompson Middle School where I received the
Golden Apple Award. I was also privileged to
successfully nominate a number of my peers for
similar recognition. In the meantime, I also worked
on Saturdays for Boston College’s College Bound
Program, a program designed by BC President Rev.
Donald Monan, S.J., and Science Professor George
Ladd, to make BPS graduates from non-exam
schools more attractive to college admissions.
During my time at the Thompson, I also became
involved with presenting math on cable television,
taking phone calls from students experiencing
difficulty with their math homework. I have worked
for College Bound for almost 17 years and counting.
And, 19 years later, I am still working for Cablevision
to explain the quadratic formula to frustrated
viewers. I have also honed my writing skills by
authoring occasional freelance articles for The
Boston Globe and other publications and to this day
I am a regular columnist for a Boston weekly.
After I retired much too early from the BPS,
I assumed a position for four years as an assistant
principal at a large Catholic elementary school. As I
live in West Roxbury, I have always entertained
distant fantasies of returning to my beloved Our Lady
of Lourdes in Jamaica Plain, where up to the 1970’s
the Sisters of St. Joseph had educated thousands of
children living in 3-deckers teeming chiefly with Irish
immigrants and their offspring. But, when I read of
the math teacher position at Nativity Prep in my
church’s bulletin, I realized that I could return to
Jamaica Plain to teach another type of immigrant.
Because of my education at BC High and my
membership in St. Ignatius Parish – as well as the
fact that my four daughters attended either Holy
Cross or Boston College – I am fully aware of the
Jesuit concept of women and men for others under
the overarching theme of Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam –
For the Greater Glory of God.
I count my blessings daily. I am privileged to work
not only under the stirring commitment of Father
John Wronski, S.J., but also under the dynamic
leadership of Principal Bisi Oyedele. Throw in the
exuberant volunteers from Holy Cross and Boston
College, a truly dedicated staff of professionals, as
well as the raison d’etre of education – the students
– and it is no surprise that I truly enjoy coming to
work on Lamartine Street each day.”
Each day the Nativity Prep community is blessed by
Joe’s example of a commitment to education and
service to others. We hope to be blessed by many
more of his “Golden Years.”

The Young Professionals

One of the most unique and meaningful blessings of
Nativity Prep is our volunteer faculty. Each year
young men and women grace the Nativity
community with their gifts, talents and passionate
witness of being “men and women for others.”
Through this two-year commitment our volunteer
faculty members lead by example in teaching an
ethic of service and generosity to others.
This past year Nativity received a double blessing,
when three of our former volunteer faculty members,
Hudson Evei (Nativity ’96), Johanna Wise Sullivan,
and Kelly O’Neil (pictured above, left to right),
stepped forward to once again serve Nativity Prep as
the leaders of our newly formed Young Professionals
Group.
Hudson, Kelly and Johanna each sat down recently
to reflect upon their Nativity experience – then and
now – and to share their vision for the Young
Professionals Group. Excerpts below:
Hudson:
“I grew up in Boston, and after graduating from
Nativity Prep in 1996, I attended Groton Academy
and then Georgetown University from which I
graduated in 2004. I was a volunteer teacher for 2
years and then joined Pyramid Hotel Group where I
am a Controller with responsibilities for 4 hotels.
As a student at Nativity I learned many of the values
and morals which have dictated how I choose to live
my life. My biggest motivation for becoming a
volunteer teacher at Nativity was the opportunity to
live the Jesuit motto of “men and women for others”.
As a teacher, I hoped to inspire my students to take
responsibility for more than just themselves and to
find ways to contribute to the improvement of the
lives of others.

doing what we can to reach out to those in need.”
Johanna:
“After growing up in Long Beach, CA, I headed east
and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.
After having served as a volunteer teacher at Nativity
for 2 years, I went to Boston College Law School and
now practice law in the Trusts & Estates Department
at Nutter, McClennen & Fish in Boston.

My decision to teach at Nativity was driven by a
variety of factors – but mostly by a belief that was
engrained in me from a young age that education is

the key to opportunity and that with a good
education, one can do whatever he or she wants.
Nativity exposes its students to opportunities that
may not otherwise be available to them – or stated
differently – it opens doors. Although I decided that
teaching was not the career path for me, I believe
strongly in the mission of the school and the service
it provides to its students. This has only been
reinforced to me as the years go by, and I see my
students now moving on to college.
I see the YP group as a way to get the next
generation involved in the school. My hope is that we
are able to attract and identify people who believe in
the mission of the school and the value that it
provides for its students.”
Kelly:
“I grew up in Concord, MA and graduated from Holy
Cross unsure of what I wanted to do. A family friend,
Nativity Board Member Jack Shaughnessy, Jr.,
encouraged me to become a volunteer teacher at
Nativity. From my first visit, I was captured by the
magnetic personalities of the students and was drawn
to the strength and passion for education by the then
Principal, Jim Harrington. I served as a volunteer
teacher for 2 years, during which I received a Masters
in Education from Boston College and then went on to
teach at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood.
Each year at the Nativity Spirit Dinner I re-unite with
many of my former students. It is so rewarding to see
how these graduates have taken their experience at
Nativity and are using it to grow into scholars and men
for others. It was hearing from my former students
that lead me to become involved with the Young
Professional initiative.
My goal is to introduce recent college grads and
other young professionals to Nativity so that they will
feel as passionately about the school as I do, will
contribute their time and resources to the school,
and through telling their friends about the wonderful
work of Nativity, awareness of the school and its
mission will increase.”

Nativity Elects First Student Council

✓ Voters proudly display “I voted” stickers.
On November 4, 2008, this scene played out across
America, and within the walls of Nativity Prep. On
Election Day, Washington DC power players were not
alone in anxiously awaiting election results. For
Nativity students, after weeks of primaries,
speeches, and campaigning, students elected their
first student council in the school’s recent history.
The idea to start a student council came from
Principal Bisi Oyedele. Some of the many benefits of
a student council include encouraging participation
in the democratic process, a greater sense of
student ownership of the school, and increased
student engagement in, and respect for, school
operations. Recent graduates feel a very strong
connection to Nativity, but some also wish they could
have had more opportunities while in school to be
even more invested in the Nativity experience. The
student council is designed to answer that need.
Echoing the campaigns of Senators McCain and
Obama, students had to meet specific criteria in
order to get on the ballot. Each grade held in-class
primaries to whittle long lists of nominees. Four
students from each class ran for representative, with
two per grade ultimately elected. Seventh graders
were allowed to run for vice president and eighth
graders for president, but for both higher offices all
candidates had to have a GPA of “B” or better.

Once nominees were determined, higher office
candidates made speeches before the school at
morning assembly. They offered creative ideas on
topics of interest including the demerit system and
bullying and teasing issues. Vice Presidential

his catchy slogan “Vote Peter Tran, the Man with a
Plan”) appealed to the teacher-voting block by
asking, “Teachers, do you ever feel like students
don’t listen to you? I would have us change places
for one day so we can see the teachers’ side.”
Presidential Candidate Alexander Adames drew his
inspiration from John F. Kennedy’s statement, “A
child mis-educated is a child lost.” He challenged
his peers to “choose wisely” and made academics
his priority by proposing a change in the schedule to
provide more opportunities for students to meet
individually with teachers.
Voters had responsibilities as well. Each prospective
voter had to register in advance and then check in
on Election Day. Nativity's single precinct was based
in the library with four private voting booths and a
ballot box supervised by faculty and student
volunteers, all in place to ensure respect for the
secret ballot. The class of Grande (current sixth
graders) provided enthusiastic volunteer support.
Four faculty advisors Daniela Maffeo, Javier Piggee,
Fran Rogers, and Rick Wisgirda volunteered to guide
the new council at bi-weekly meetings.

Election Day was full of enthusiasm and excitement.
Lines of students waited their turn to cast ballots for
their student leaders. In addition, students got to
vote for their preferred candidate in a mock national
election. When all the Nativity votes were counted,
presidents Alexander Adames (Nativity) and Barack
Obama (U.S.) won the day, and vice presidents
Peter Tran (Nativity) and Joseph Biden (U.S) were
also victorious. Eight representatives (Boysie
Williams, Giovanni Rodrigues, Jamon Anderson,
Darwin Pena, Quang Dang, Anthony DoCanto, Victor
Owens, and Antonio Pena) will round out Nativity’s
newest campaign-tested and popularly elected
leadership team.
Soccer at Nativity Prep

At Nativity, hard work transfers from the classroom
onto the sports field. Dedication and teamwork play
a role in the fulfillment of Nativity's mission. At the
start of the school year, students are expected to
bring these ideals onto the Varsity and Junior Varsity
(JV) soccer fields.

In JV soccer, the 5th and 6th graders focus on
conditioning and the basic skills of soccer.
Southwest Corridor Park is transformed into a mini
soccer field where students practice dribbling,
passing, and shooting. They run laps and sprints,
and stretch together as a team led by our captains
Anthony DoCanto (6th), Samuel Rodrigues (6th),
Luis Inoa (5th) and Alpha Fofanah (5th).
At the Varsity level, the basic skills of soccer are
further developed in smaller groups. Offensive and
defensive strategies are best learned in 7 vs. 7
scrimmages. The older players serve as role models
of teamwork and leadership, best exemplified by our
three 8th grade captains, Alexander Adames, Alex
Fernandes and Boysie Williams.
Both seasons culminated in a Varsity vs. JV
showdown. The school community came out to
witness the entertaining display of athleticism and
sportsmanship. The Varsity team came out with the
victory even though the JV players put up a strong
fight. Congratulations to both teams on their great
seasons.

Nativity Prep School reported more than $1.47 million in revenue in
2007-2008. 38% of this income came from contributions and pledges; 27%
came from fundraising events; 23% came from grants; 9% came from
investment growth and interest; and the remaining 3% came from other
sources including activity fees collected from families.

Nativity Prep spent $1.59 million on 2007-2008 operations, making
the following possible for our students, graduates and their families.
❖ 45 hours of schooling each week (compared to an average of
30 hours per week at other schools).
❖ Significant financial assistance and programming support for
Nativity Prep School graduates in high school and college.
❖ Individual and group counseling for students and family support
services and programs.
❖ A minimum of 12 hours of evening or weekend academic,
cultural and community service activities for each student/family.

Each year the Nativity Spirit Service Award Dinner
commemorates the legacy of our former Executive
Director, Raymond J. Callahan, S.J., by bestowing
an award – bearing his name – on an individual
who exemplifies the commitment to service, social
justice and sacrifice that illuminated Fr. Callahan’s

OPERATIONS $1,590,000
Nativity Prep operates only through the generosity of our
donors. All undesignated gifts to our Annual Fund support
everything from buying text books to paying electric and
water bills.
SPONSOR A STUDENT/TEACHER $5,000
When you designate a gift of $5,000 to our Student
Sponsorship Program, you will be paired with one or more
students and keep in touch with them throughout the school
year. With an additional gift of $1,000, you can help us build
a new Graduate Support Endowment Fund for their future.
Sponsoring a teacher pays the stipend for our volunteer
teachers.
MASTER TEACHER PROGRAM $185,000
A designated gift to this program pays our experienced
teachers a modest salary and supports our investment in a
balance of experienced teachers and mentors for our
younger, volunteer teaching staff.
GRADUATE SUPPORT $100,000
Once our students graduate, we make it a priority to Support
them throughout high school and college. Gifts designated
to Graduate Support are used for tuition assistance.
SUMMER ACADEMIC/LEADERSHIP PROGRAM $2,500
Every summer our students attend a month long, mandatory
summer program which costs over $100,000. Your $2,500
summer sponsorship ensures that the student you support
will remain focused on his academics and will continue to
grow as a valuable member of the Nativity community.
