HEMOSYL TabletDosage Forms/CompositionTablet: Each tablet contains Ethamsylate 250 mg/500mg.Pharmacological IndexAntihaemorrhagicINDICATIONPre-, per-, or post surgical capillary hemorrhages.Capillary haemorrhages: haematuria, haematemesis, melaena, epistaxis,gingivorrhagia.Metrorrhagia, primary or IUD-related menorrhagia in the absence of organicpathology.Periventricular hemorrhages in premature babies.ContraindicationsHypersensitivity, porphyria, pregnancy and lactation.Adverse ReactionsNausea, headache, skin rash. In most cases, these symptoms disappear spontaneously.Drug InteractionsIncreased toxicity: MAO inhibitors hallucinationsMechanism of ActionA potent antihistamine and serotonin antagonist, competes with histamine for H1-receptor sites on effector cells in the gastrointestinal tract, blood vessels, andrespiratory tractPharmacodynamics/KineticsMetabolism: Almost completelyElimination: >50% excreted in urine (primarily as metabolites); ~25% excreted infecesUsual DosageAdultsPre surgical: 1 or 2 tablets (250-500 mg)Post surgical: 1 or 2 tablets (250-500 mg) i.m. every 4 - 6 hours as long as the risk ofbleeding persists.Internal medicine: generally 1 or 2 tablets 2 - 3 times a day (1000 - 1500 mg) to betaken with meals with a little water.Gynaecology, meno-metrorrhagia: 1 or 2 tablets 3 times a day (1500 mg) to be takenwith meals with a little water. Treatment lasts 10 days and starts 5 days before theexpected onset of menses.
