Hela Mouse wins FIRA
Ergonomics
Excellence Award
The Perific Wireless Dual Mouse
has been awarded FIRA’s
Ergonomic Excellence Award for
“excellent ergonomic features
that improve the health and well
being of visual display terminal
(VDT) users”. Simply, it changes
the way computer
operators use their
mouse, dramatically
ergonomics at
their workstation
and potentially
eliminating
the risk of upper
limb disorders
(ULD) and repetitive
strain injury
(RSI).
Distributed exclusively
in the UK by Hela
Corporate Wellbeing, the
Perific Mouse is actually
two mice in one! It can be
used like a regular mouse or it can
be held, anyway you want, still
retaining all the operations of a
conventional mouse but enabling
the users to vary their position
whilst operating their computer.
Levent Caglar, Senior Ergonomist,
FIRA explained that “the Perific
affords great freedom and flexibility
at the usually static workstation.
You can lean back in your seat holding
the mouse and use the track
ball to browse the internet or to
continue operating your computer”.
The Perific can also be worn on
the hand, for rapid but strain-free
switching between mouse and keyboard.
extensive testing for the ergonomic
requirements of British and
European Standards and FIRA
Specifications. The Ergonomics
Excellence Award identifies and
differentiates those products that
excel in ergonomics from
those that only meet
the minimum
requirement.
Products have to
excel in
ergonomic features,
be manufactured
under quality systems and be
ecologically friendly.
“The standard to receive this
award is extremely high” Levent
explained “and
very few products
tested manage to
pass the trials that
identify whether a
design has been created
specifically with human’s in
mind. The Perific was trialled for
one week by 10 people from different
environments and they were
asked to record their experiences
using the mouse. One person suffers
with RSI and found that whilst
using the Perific all the problems
usually experienced disappeared
completely. As soon as they reverted
to a conventional mouse the RSI
returned.” Levent went on to
explain that “the Perific received
the award not only for its ergonomic
design but also because the trials
clearly identified that it will probably
play an important part in reducing
the ill effects, aches and pains
associated with RSI and ULD.”
