Following the introduction of Regulation 4
(Duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic
premises) of the Control of Asbestos at Work
Regulations (CAWR) 2002, many facilities
managers of commercial buildings have commissioned
asbestos surveys in order to comply
with the requirements. However, ‘managing
asbestos’ does not solely imply conducting
surveys of the premises.
Checkmate Fire Solutions, the UK’s leading
passive fire protection provider, has entered
into a partnership with Haven Fire and Safety
in Dubai. Together Checkmate and Haven can
now offer complete passive and active fire
protection services to architects, builders,
contractors and premises managers in this
rapidly expanding province.
Checkmate has over 14 years experience of passive
fire protection of commercial, public and
government buildings; providing secure “means
of escape”, damage limitation and specialist
protection of IT and Comms Rooms. In addition
to protecting new building works Checkmate
offer full survey and remedial work for existing
buildings and facilities. They are a certified
“competent body” and can ensure fire protec-
It also means formulation of a management plan
accessible to all personnel for each asbestos
containing material (ACM) identified during the
survey and thereafter implementing the prioritised
recommended actions. These may range
from an annual inspection programme to complete
asbestos removal. Failure to implement
appropriate action is a breach of
Regulation 4 of CAWR. Eighteen
months after the regulation came into
force, the Health & Safety Executive
(HSE) is now actively enforcing this by
prosecution of those who are non-compliant.
With 30 years experience in the
asbestos industry, Eurofins CPA
Laboratories is eminently capable of
providing a complete asbestos risk
management programme comprising
asbestos site surveys, subsequent sample
analysis in our asbestos testing laboratory,
followed by project management of
remedial works and site attendance by qualified
analysts.
Eurofins CPA Laboratories is the environmental
division of Eurofins SA in the UK having been a
member of the international Eurofins Scientific
Group since 1998. This has expanded the UK service
to include the analysis of food, pharmaceuticals
and other environmental samples such as
soils and gaseous emissions. With such a long
focus on the asbestos industry, CPA is able to
deliver a specialised and integrated service with
rapid turnaround of results.
Dubai deal offers
complete fire protection
tion of Comms Rooms and other fire cells is up
to required standards and that such cells have
not been compromised by changes or additions
to installed IT equipment or other building services.
Comms rooms in particular frequently
develop “organically” and fire protection is
often compromised accidentally. Regular checks
are essential to ensure any fire cell remains
intact and protects from both internal and
external fires.
Haven Fire and Safety has been operating since
1997 and is located at Al Quoz in Dubai. Their
services include hydrostatic cylinder testing to
BS 5430, fire extinguisher filling, air purity monitoring
and certification, service of fixed foam
making equipment, inspection, service and
repair of fire detection and alarm systems and
re-certification of all types of fire fighting and
suppression systems.
Haven also offer a special service to remove and
recycle Halon 1211 and 1301 gasses from comms
rooms gas suppression fire protection systems
and refill them with environmentally friendly
gasses. This service prevents the release of
greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere and
allows them to be disposed of in a safe manner.
“We already have had considerable experience
of working on fire protection in Hong Kong”
comments Alan Oliver, Marketing Director of
Checkmate “ and we are very pleased to have
reached an agreement to work with Haven in
Dubai as this is a very important and growing
market for our fire protection services”.
Lasers aren’t
just for Discos
With today’s requirement for hi-tech fire
detection for hi-tech facilities, such as Clean
Rooms, Computer Suites, and
Telecommunication Exchanges, the answer is
the new Laser Aspirated Smoke Detector
(LASD) from Fire Fighting Enterprises Ltd.
The LASD is the perfect solution when a high
sensitivity smoke detection system is specified
for a wide range of installations. The LASD unit
monitors very large areas using sampling pipes
with specially positioned holes, in place of actual
point smoke detectors.
The LASD units are available, in either a single
or two channel version. A pipe up to 100 metres
in length can be connected to each channel, giving
a maximum area coverage of 1,000 m2 per
channel.
These LASD
units are also
very suitable
for low-tech
locations, such
as Warehouses
to Cathedrals,
Ceiling Voids to
Duct Sampling
and Prison
Cells to Cold
Stores, and as
it’s IP65 rated
the LASD can
be used in
many harsh
environments.
