12 news... ABB drive saves energy at the FA A 22kW variable speed drive from ABB is helping staff keep their cool at the Football Association’s headquarters in London. By varying the speed of the building’s air handling fan to match the changing pressure in the air ducts precisely, the drive is also helping the FA save energy. The drive, supplied by ABB HVAC partner DH Drives via air movement equipment manufacturer Flakt Woods, was part of a wider upgrade of the Soho Square building’s systems. This was spurred by the need to include humidification in the air conditioning system for the first time. Clarke Plc to provide an intelligent digital lighting control system for this large new hospital, Simmtronic has taken on some design responsibility for engineering a high-reliability system capable of delivering this complex project whilst providing the energy efficiency demanded. As part of the lighting control scheme, dimming functions have been widely employed throughout the hospital - in both wards and consulting rooms. Simmtronic has also designed and supplied a special lighting control interface with the nurse call system to provide patients with a personal bedhead control featuring on/off and dimming functions. The extensive use of presence detection in nonclinical areas will deliver energy savings by ensuring lights are automatically switched off when these locations are unoccupied. Romford’s new state-of-the art healthcare facility will have a large cancer and renal dialysis unit and comprise over 4800 rooms in a 1million sq. ft. building with a footprint the size of 12 football pitches.
