B.I.G breakthrough
for visitor ID badges
B.I.G, the badging solution specialist, has
launched in the UK an innovative ID badging
system that visually changes its appearance to
ensure that visitors don't outstay their welcome.
TIMEbadge changes colour when a
visitor's badge is no longer valid,
eliminating the risk of unauthorised
badge use and the need to
collect used badges. Even if a visitor
fails to hand in their badge at
the end of their visit, they won't
be able to re-use the badge to
regain access without being
noticed.
Each TIMEbadge consists of a specially
coated white adhesive front
part and a back part that's preprinted
with time-release ink.
Once the front part is applied to
the back part, the TIMEbadge is
activated.
The rate of TIMEbadge expiration
ranges from half a day to one
month. Depending on the expiration
period chosen, the TIMEbadge will remain
white for the majority of that time before the
change begins. For example, a One-Day Expiring
TIMEbadge issued in the morning will reveal
light pink bars by late afternoon, and darker
pink bars within one day, clearly signalling that
the badge has expired.
Once an Expiring TIMEbadge is activated, the
expiration process cannot
be reversed as it is impossible
to separate the
front part from the back
part without visibly damaging
the badge. The
Expiring TIMEbadge is not
affected by light, so the
expiration process works
indoors and outdoors, day
or night.
Different badges are
available for heavy or
moderate visitor traffic
and can be colour-coded
to distinguish between
different types of visitor
or different days of the
week. TIMEbadges can
be used with any visitor
management software.
B.I.G has already received an order from a
major investment bank for 200,000 customised
Expiring TIMEbadges - an early sign that the
badges will prove to be a huge hit in the UK.
SmartTrack is no
longer a secret
There has been a marked increase in the level
of interest in the SmartTrack mobile robotic
surveillance system following its appearance
on a recently broadcast documentary on shop
theft, reports Noel Verbruggen, Managing
Director of Intrepid Security Solutions.
Dispatches: Secrets of the Shoplifters examined
the staggering scale of shop theft which costs
retailers and ultimately consumers billions of
pounds every year. While the general public
largely consider shoplifting a trivial and 'victimless'
crime, the program made the point that
theft from stores is increasingly lining the pockets
of drug addicts and gangs of organised criminals
who are stealing to order.
“The producers as part of their research for the
program visited our stand at IFSEC 2005. This
gave us an opportunity to demonstrate to them
the benefits of SmartTrack not the least of
which is its powerful deterrent effect. Would be
thieves cannot see where the camera is positioned
on the track as it is hidden behind a tinted
or mirrored enclosure”, said Noel
Verbruggen.
Intrepid have already received significant orders
for SmartTrack from a number of well known
retailers including ASDA, B&Q and CO-OP and
following the publicity on the Dispatches program
are confident that they will be able to
report other large orders for the product in the
near future.
Portable boiler plant
helps construction
continue at Walsgrave
Hospital
When leading PFI/PPP service provider
Skanska wanted help to maintain temperature
so that floor laying processes could
continue during the construction of
Walsgrave hospital in Coventry, the company
turned to Andrews Sykes for a complete
hire solution that included 500kW
Hotmobil mobile packaged boiler plant.
The process to lay vinyl flooring was scheduled
for January-March 2005 and there was
no time for procrastination. "Unfortunately it
was a cold time of year but we couldn't let
the weather delay construction," explains
Skanska project manager, Nigel Lewis. "To be
able to continue with the floor laying process
we had to maintain an ambient temperature
of 17ºC around the clock - 24 hours a day."
At first Skanska asked hire solutions specialist
Andrews Sykes to provide small KH500
propane powered heaters but following a site
survey it was recognised that the quantity of
heaters required would not be economical to
run because of gas usage and the labour
required to repeatedly change cylinders.
The alternative solution proposed by
Andrews Sykes was to install two 500kW
Hotmobil mobile packaged boiler plant connected
to 16, 50kW internal air-handling
units, distributed equally around the four
floor areas of the building. The installation
took approximately two weeks to complete,
with much of the heating hose placed in
trays above head height. In total approximately
3km of hose was used. Andrews Sykes
also had to provide step-up power transformers
with RCD protection to suit the 230V airhandling
units; the only power available on
site was 110V. Other equipment supplied by
Andrews Sykes included two 4700 litre bunded
fuel tanks and two high specification
pumps.
