Lanes for Drains
has claimed a
record-breaking
reline. The UK’s
largest independent
drainage
specialist has
broken its own
and the UK
record for the
longest reline,
with the installation
of a single
liner measuring
over half a kilometre
and
weighing in at
more than 10
tonnes.
The reline was part of a 727-metre renovation
of 450 diameter mainline sewer along the banks
of the River Tweed in Peebles, Scotland. And
Lanes did it in just two sections: firstly relining
a massive 509-metres with one liner before
installing a second 218-metre length to complete
the run.
Lanes’ previous reline record was 489 metres.
Lanes had been contracted to carry out the
Peebles renovation as part of a multi million
pound flood alleviation scheme for Scottish
Water Solutions being undertaken by Morrison
Construction Services.
Lanes decided to install the two liners - the
the success of new TopGolf
Market leading Kee Klamp(® fittings from Kee
Klamp Ltd have carded an impressive score
for versatility in the construction of 48 new
driving range bays at the TopGolf Game Centre
in Addlestone, Surrey.
The new TopGolf Game Centre is a recent redevelopment
of the former Surrey Golf &
Fitness site, which has seen the creation of a
new hi-tech driving range, 9-hole golf course
and fitness centre. Building owners Baydrive,
working in partnership with Project Managers,
Jeff Mason Design Associates (JMDA) and architects,
Limbrick Limited, specified the Kee
Klamp® fittings for use in the new driving range
bays. Providing a more versatile alternative to
pre-fabricated framing, the fittings help create
tubular structures which divide up the internal
driving bay areas and provide support for seating,
poster frames and signage.
longest upstream and the other downstream -
from the same inversion point. But it wasn’t just
the length of the liner which made this contract
such an achievement, according to Simon Bull,
Lanes’ Reline Operations Manager.
“The proximity of the drains to the river - about
3-metres in some places - was causing severe
water ingress so we pre-lined the sewer first.
We also set out 2.3Km of 200 diameter overpumping
in three lines along the river bank. And
we built a 780-metre temporary roadway with a
12 x 12-metre working platform.
“Overhead power cables meant that we couldn’t
operate in the normal way. Instead of lifting
equipment we had to hand hoist the 10-tonne
liner up the 5-metre high staging we had built
and install it by hand.
“The installation process took 4 days which was
quite risky because the uncharacteristically
warm weather could have accelerated the curing
process. The £70,000 worth of reline materials
had been delivered in a refrigerated vehicle
because temperature is so crucial.”
Curing the liner required 2 four and a half million
BTU boilers - a process which took another
two days, followed by a further 48 hours for
trimming and cutting.
Simon adds “Despite the obstacles, the post
installation survey showed a perfect reline and
since we completed the second 218-metre section
without a hitch too, Morrison Construction
Services was more than happy with our recordbreaking
reline!” Reader Reply No.: 85037
patibility with different tube sizes ensured that
the precise arrangement of framing required for
the functionality of the scheme could be easily
achieved. After a mock-up using size 8 tube and
fittings, the project team decided appearance
would be improved if the tube diameter was
reduced to size 7. Also, the versatility of the
Kee Klamp® fittings range, incorporating special
crank and end fittings, proved significant, eliminating
the need for any costly one-off fabrications.
All fittings and tube were powder coated
to create a high quality, aesthetically attractive
appearance with no on-site finishing required.
“We felt that using Kee Klamp® fittings, effectively
a sectional off-the-shelf system of components,
would give us better quality control
and enable more flexibility on site than if we
opted for a pre-fabricated framing solution”
says Ian Green of JMDA. “This supposition was
entirely justified by the end result”.
The whole construction was quickly and efficiently
completed by the main contractor,
Phelan Construction, without the need for any
specialist help. All fittings within the versatile
and extensive Kee Klamp® product range incorporate
an integral socket set screw which locks
the fitting securely onto its tube, eliminating
the need for time consuming welding or specialist
installation skills. A standard hex ratchet and
tube cutters are the only tools required to create
strong, rigid structures. This approach helps
keep structure assembly time down to an absolute
minimum and reduce costs whilst giving an
excellent slip load performance.
The Greenest
Olympics Ever?
news...
A very strong aspect of London’s successful
bid to host the 2012 Olympics was the teams
pledge that these would be the first ever sustainable
Games.
The plans, which will transform one of the city’s
most underdeveloped areas into a model for
sustainable urban development, will have a positive
impact on the local and broader community
not only in the short term but also in the
medium and long term.
Such far sightedness will need strategic partnerships
from companies who share both the vision
and ability to meet the most strenuous requirements.
Grundfos pumps were the first manufacturers to
integrate speed control into their pumps and
have been doggedly promoting variable speed
technology ever since.
With a range of pumps that will answer the
questions posed by the various applications that
the Olympics will demand, plus the ability to
save up to 76% energy over their fixed speed
counterparts, Grundfos are well positioned to
supply the pumps for all facets of the Games.
Add to this their track record in having supplied
66% of the pumps to Athens and 88% of the
pumps to Euro 2004 and they are sure that UK
consultants and contractors will recognise their
ability to make an outstanding environmental
contribution. Reader Reply No.: 85040
Pickfords Records
the super green
E-Mercury electric
delivery
vehicle.
Supplied by
Modec Vehicles
Limited the van
has a top speed of
50mph, a range of
150 miles, a payload of 2 tonnes and a 12 cubic
metre load volume, making it an excellent, cost
effective and environmentally friendly option
for the regular deliveries and collections that
Pickfords makes every day in towns and cities
across the UK.
Currently being trialed at Pickfords’ Bow depot
for deliveries in and around the London
Financial and City sector, the vehicle is proving
a big hit with the drivers. Not least as being so
environmentally friendly it is exempt from the
Congestion Charge and parking fines.
An added bonus for Pickfords are the security
systems that come as standard. The vehicle
automatically switches itself off 30 seconds
after the driver leaves his seat but, more crucially,
at this stage the vehicle controls are also
locked making it impossible to steal the vehicle
whilst the driver is making his delivery.
