A TRADITION OF QUALITYFACTORY OVERVIEWPick up any LOWA boot and take a serious look at it. What you’ll see is theculmination of 80+ years of boot building experience from an area of the worldwhere a good pair of boots has always been essential. Generations of Bavarianmountaineers, climbers, and hikers have helped LOWA develop the technicalinnovations and construction techniques that make our boots special. Detailslike our patented GORE-TEX® lasted lining which makes boots fit better, withfewer wrinkles. Details like our proprietary AWP design, which makes boots moresupportive and comfortable while preventing overpronation. In 2000, Davo Karnicar became the first man to ski an uninterrupted Everestdescent…and did it in off–the-shelf LOWA Struktura boots. So when we talk abouthow much we value making “good boots”, we mean it!LOWA’s headquarters are in Jetzendorf, a village in the rolling foothills of Germany’s BavarianAlps. LOWA has been based in Jetzendorf for over 80 years, and it’s the heart of LOWA’sresearch, design and manufacturing activities. We’re the largest company in Jetzendorf, andhave employed generations of Bavarian craftspeople, who bring incredible pride and skill totheir work. It’s where we handcraft our mountaineering, backpacking, hiking and trekkingboots. We build our ATC line of boots and shoes in neighboring Slovakia, just a few hours away fromJetzendorf. (Yes, the cost of doing business in Slovakia is lower than in Jetzendorf, but it’smuch higher than building boots in Asia!) Keeping our ATC business in Slovakia allows us tobenefit from their highly skilled work force and to keep our quality control close to home. We’re proud that our company uses the latest technology to build great boots, but we’re evenprouder of the people who make LOWA boots the best in the world. We are proud to makeour boots in Europe1) We’re boot makers. It’sall that this company hasever done. We value theEuropean tradition ofpassing the craft down fromgeneration to generation. We are not a jacket or tentcompany that thinks ourlogo looks good on a shoe.KEEPIN’ IT CLEANLOWA cares about “clean and green” production methods.•LOWA must adhere to strict EU “green” production regulations•Air and water waste is monitored and disposed of according toEU safety standards•The cows that drink from the stream 20 feet from our factory’sback door will attest to LOWA’s European standards of cleanliness.2) Many years of runningour own factories ensuresthat our boot buildingknowledge is retained atLOWA.3) Proximity of factories inEurope assure better qualitycontrol and quick action ifneeded.4) We are bound by theEuropean Community’shigh standards ofenvironmentally sensitiveproduction in order toensure a clean environment.Dear LOWA...“Air scrubbers” behindthe LOWA factory.Hand crafted in Europe - I’m aware as both of my pair are made in Slovakia. Wherea boot is made is the first thing I look for as I don’t buy products made in China, preferably only the US and Europe. That was my #1 reason for purchasing them.#2 & 3. GIRL POWERLOWA FLEX/SHANKWomen have become one of the driving forces in the outdoor market and their buying power is here tostay. That’s a good thing for LOWA, because once women try our boots, they usually become fiercely loyalto our brand. Why such loyalty? Simple - our women’s boots have always been built to fit women’s feet andlegs. LOWA understands that it’s important to build a women’s boot with true women’s lasts and designboots with women’s-only features.Dear LOWA...I and some friends trekked to Tanzania in September 2004to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. One day when we were climbing theBarranco Wall we realized that three of us were wearing Lowaboots (pictures attached).Your boots got us to the top...in great shape! Thanks, Lowa!Kari B.San Clemente, CAWomen have:- Narrower heels- Proportionally wider forefeet- Higher arches which can create sensitive areas on the top of the instep- Lower calves and Achilles tendons- Less padding than men’s feetLOWA’s innovative women-specific boot designs can be summed up by “Out-of-the-box comfort”- C4 padded tongue (comfy on your instep)- Flexible soles for easier walking and hiking- Female-specific lasts which are narrow in the heel, higher in the arch and wider at the ball- Comfort cuffs and Comfort “spoilers” provide softer, contoured padding to accommodatethe back of the Achilles and ankle areas- Achilles areas are “notched” down to accommodate back of ankle- Glove leather on tongue (on non-GTX boots) and extra padding for maximum comforton the instep- Specific boots use a soft glove leather in the upper cuff for a comfortable fit about theankle area- LOWA offers narrows and wide width options in the Banff, Trekker and Lady Sport models, plus narrow options in Renegades and Tempests. These are uniquely lasted with all-newmolded midsoles.Comfort Cuff andComfort Spoilersprovide softer, contouredpadding to accommodatethe back of the Achilles andankle areas.Summitting Kilimanjaro in LOWAsAn important part of a LOWA boot is its “shank” or “insole” system. What’s soimportant about a shank? Well, the shank affects how the boot will flex while youwalk as well as adding torsional stability. Shanks are “sandwiched” between theoutsole and midsole. LOWA uses nylon shanks that vary in thickness, are tapered andshaped to determine the correct flex for each boot. We use nylon shanks in all ourboots except the Ice Comp because, unlike steel shanks, they do not conduct heat orcold. (Plus, they don’t set off metal detectors - LOWA’s are TSA friendly!)LOWA has also developed a specialized “stabilizer” nylon shank for our light hiking andmulti-purpose footwear.Flexes (from the stiffest to the softest)Mtn boots Cristallo GTX Full nylon/rigidBackpacking boots Banff Full nylon/semi rigidTrekking Boots Trekker Full nylon/mid range flexHiking Tanark Full nylon/mid range flexATC Renegade GTX Stabilizer/soft flexATC Trail Scarab New stabilizer/soft flexSTEP LIVELYDear LOWA...Not a question – Just Praise! My wife and I are long-time solidfans of Tempest Lo’s. That’s 3,000-5,000 less than they should be taking if they want to keep fit and not gain those extra lbs. Put a nice newpair of LOWA ATC Trail shoes together with a pair of Nordic walking poles and you get “Nordic Walking”- the latest fitness trend in Europe. It burns up to 40% more calories than walking without poles, increasesyour cardiovascular efficiency by 25%, reduces stress on lower back and knees, strengthens upper bodymuscle groups - including abs, shoulders, chest and back and improves balance. It’s a great fun way for yourcustomers to get out there and MOVE. (Hey, you might even want to try it yourself!)Photo courtesy of LEKI USA10 Girl PowerLOWA Flex/Shank 11

GORE-TEX® LININGS “Guaranteed to Keep You Dry”KEEPING THE “UPPER” HANDGORE-TEX® fabric is specifically engineered to form an impenetrablebarrier against wind and water while maintaining breathability.GORE-TEX® fabric is waterproofNo matter how wet the going, moisture cannot penetrate through its outerlayer, which is why GORE-TEX® fabric carries the Guaranteed To Keep You Dry®promise.GORE-TEX® fabric is breathableThe more active you become, the more heat and moisture your body produces.Breathable outerwear and footwear aids your body’s natural cooling process byallowing perspiration vapor to escape. With GORE-TEX® footwear, you stay dry and comfortable when you’re activeand there’s no perspiration buildup to make you cold. See www.gore-tex.comfor more information.LOWA’s “Lasted” GORE-TEX® Constructionsospecial it’s patentedWet feet and wrinkles in boot liners cause blisters. Hikers with blisters see less sunsets, smell fewerwildflowers and have a generally miserable time in the outdoors. Then they become bowlers. LOWA’s GORE-TEX® construction is the best way to keep this dreadful fate from happening.LOWA attaches GORE-TEX® to our boots with our proprietary “lasted method”. Instead of using a bootielike the “other guys” , the laminate is stitched to the upper at the cuff, then attached to the insole and thebottom is sealed with GORE-TEX® tape to provide a waterproof “gasket” to the insole of the boot.- The advantage of this construction allows for a smooth and seamless GORE-TEX® lining which reduces thelikelihood of “hot spots.” Furthermore, the spot gluing ensures maximum breathability of the laminate.Different TypesGORE-TEX® Footwear Lining: A two layer lining material is laminated to the GORE-TEX®membrane. The inner material allows perspiration to escape while repelling water. The Hydrofil nylonbacking attracts moisture and passes it on to other layers. LOWA uses this lining in our backpacking, trekking, hiking and ATC boots.GORE-TEX® XCR Lining: XCR is also a laminate with three layers of material, but it’s designedfor a different set of conditions and use. In addition to being waterproof, it has a high degree ofbreathability. It provides climate-controlled comfort in warmer ambient temperatures and duringincreased physical activity – so it’s ideal for aerobic activities like fast-packing, running, Nordic Walkingand for use in casual shoes. LOWA uses XCR in certain ATC styles that will most likely be worn in warm, highly aerobic conditions.- XCR also works great in casual shoes when you need protection from snow and slush combined withindoor comfort and added breathability.GORE-TEX® Lab testing: Just like LOWA, the folks at Gore are obsessed withquality control. Their extensive testing in the lab and in the footwear factories assuresno-fail performance. Factories are chosen and certified by Gore based on their ability tomanufacture a product that meets their high standards. Footwear is regularly testedwith Gore “flexing” and centrifuge machines, which mimic the stresses of in-field use.Full Grain LeatherThis is the outer “skin” of the hide. Its thickness makes it very durable, and it can looksmooth or textured.Split LeatherThis leather can be either the reverse side of hide, or when the leather is split, the inner moretextured side is called the split or suede. Splits, in comparison to full grains, can be thinner, asthe hide has been cut in order to make it softer and easier to work with. Splits, like reverses, holdup very well to abrasion because of their rough texture. They are sometimes used for heel andtoe bumpers. Split leather can be oiled or waxed to or left plain based for the desired look.- Falco and ATC boots like Tempests use a combination of nubuck and splits.Nubuck LeatherTextileThis is a full grain leather that has been lightly sanded for a softer finish, or to reduceirregularities in the leather. It gives it a suede-like look. Nubuck can be oiled, waxed or left plain, depending on the desired look.- Tibet GTX, Tanark, Banff, Trekker and Renegade II GTX are examples of boots that usenubuck leatherMicro-SuedeIt is synthetic leather that is used in LOWA’s new ATC Outdoor Fitness collection. Micro-suedeis up to 1/3 lighter in weight than most leathers, and has high tear and water resistance. It istreated with a Teflon spray which helps with water resistance.- Dragonfly XCR and Scarab II are examples of shoes that use micro-suede as insertpieces and trim sections.Cordura® or a similar coarse weave textile is used generally with split leathers. The textiles arenylon or a nylon/polyester combination. They are lightweight, abrasion resistant and have anexcellent flex.-Baleno GTX and Klondike GTX are examples of boots that use a combination oftextile and split leather uppers.3D Mesh is used when breathability is a key need. It’s durable and lightweight, and isused in the Windy and Scarab II.Photo courtesy of W.L. Gore & AssociatesGORE-TEX®, GORE-TEX® XCR, Guaranteed To Keep You Dry and designs are trademarks of W.L. CONSTRUCTION PROCESSRandingCutting- Cutting the leather requires judgement and skill.LOWA leather cutters are the most experiencedworkers in the factory.- Metal die lines of the boot pieces are laid-out on flatsheets of leather hides; the hides are then cut.- Some boots require as many as 25-30 individualpieces of leather and die cut components.- Hand wrapping rands is a costly process that canonly be done by hand.- The boot is prepared by sanding the bottom sidewalls, then applying the adhesive and wrappingthe rubber rand by hand. Finally, a special machinepresses the rubber rand to the boot upper.Attaching the midsole/outsole to the upper- Each upper is stitched by hand, with up to 75 steps.- High stress areas are double stitched- New synthetic, non wicking threadis used in all stitching.- When the boot begins to take shape, string laces are used to hold it together.- All stitching is done in factories throughoutGermany, Poland, Croatia, Slovakia and Italy.StitchingCemented: The midsole and upper are glued togetherand then cemented with adhesive to the upper.Cemented outsoles can be re-soled by a cobbler.Direct Injection: The upper is placed into an injectionmachine and the sole is placed on the bottom of themachine’s mold. PU is injected into the mold, joiningthe upper and sole together. This encapsulates theshank and bonds all the pieces together.Lasting- The upper is precisely laced for lasting.- The insole or shank is tacked to the boot.- The uppers go through the vapor channel wherethey are conditioned with steam and heat forlasting to make them pliable and to prevent themfrom tearing.- The upper is then stretched over the last and thefore-foot is glued to the insole.- Next, the heel is stretched over the last and tackedand glued to the insole.Dear LOWA...Hello, my name is Gus D. and I recently purchased a pair of LOWA hiking boots…for a show that I was going on that took me around the world for two and a halfmonths. I thought I would wear them now and then, but your boots are so great Iwore them almost everyday. I wore these boots on four different continents on somereally tough locations and they were incredible. I just wanted to thank you for makinga great product. - Gus D.SPS TechnologyLOWA’s SPS technology, introduced in 2004, is a proprietary midsole technology. How it works: By placing supportive TPU inserts within the softer PU midsole mold,SPS helps control and prevent the overpronation and supination that can occurduring walking. The result: A more balanced and stable stride, for better comfort onlong hikes and extended backpacking trips.14 Construction ProcessConstruction Process 15

BETTER BOOT FITTING, OR HOW TO HAVE REALLY HAPPY CUSTOMERSThe ultimate result in perfect boot fitting is to increase customer satisfaction, to makeyou and your shop look professional, and to keep people coming back to your store. It alsois a major contributor in reducing the number of boot returns that you get because ofpoor or bad fit.LOWA is a proud sponsor of the FitSystem by Phil Oren which instructs retailers how tocorrectly fit a boot to an individual foot. If you ever have a chance to attend a FitSystemSeminar, you should jump at the opportunity.A Few Steps to Keep in Mind When Fitting Boots- Perform a visual assessment of the foot- is it high or low volume? Is it wide or narrow? Isthere any kind of deformity like bunions or hammer toes?- Measure the foot correctly = Be sure to use a Brannock measuring device. Don’t take yourcustomer’s word that they know what size they are!! Measure with the correct sock for theboot’s end use.- Check for a snug heel fit and correct width.- Does the foot flex in the proper place? Does the boot break (or bend) at the ball of the foot?Is the boot comfortable where the cuff meets the shin?- Is there any in-step pressure? Check that the boot is laced properly.- Is there enough toe room? The customer should be able to comfortably wiggle his or her toes.- Decide if the customer needs an after-market footbed.Dear LOWA...Struktura Liner Molding InstructionsIf you have a blowdryer, turn it on medium and place nozzle inside the boot, moving itconstantly so it doesn’t burn the lining. Then place your foot inside, and close buckles.Wear the boot for about 10 minutes...the boot will now be custom-fit to your foot. Oryou can place the boots in a 200 degree oven for 10 minutes (just don’t answer thephone and forget about ‘em!), then wear them for about 10 minutes. Here in the San Juans we have had an exceptionally cold winter with not much snowCARE AND WHERE TO REPAIRDrying- Pull laces and open the tongue. Pull out the footbeds and dry boots at ROOM TEMPERATURE.Airing out may take 24 hours.- If very wet, lightly stuff boots with newspaper (this will help in sucking up moisture).- NEVER dry boots in an oven or by a hot fire. The glue that holds the rand and sole together is heat sensitive!Rands and soles that have melted off are not warrantied!CleaningWaterproofing- Brush dirt off the boot, clean off all dirt on the surface off the boot.Remove footbeds and clean the inside, removing dirt and sweat residue.- If boots are really dirty, use saddle soap and rinse wipe thoroughly.- Pull out the laces and open the tongue.- Don’t put your boots in the washing machine or dryer (we are not kidding…)!Treat the boot with any commercially available shoe waterproofing product such as Snoseal, Nikwax or Granger’s.(Do not use mink oil for waterproofing or breaking-in your boots!)NOTE: Also be careful about wearing your boots around fertilizers and other chemicals for your lawn care. Thesechemicals can tend to break down the stitching and leather on your boots and this damage is not warrantied.WarrantyDave Page, Cobbler3509 Evanston Ave No.Seattle, WA 98103206-632 8686www.davepagecobbler.com*For full service repairRepairsWe recommend the following boot repair facilities:The Cobbler & Cordwainer73 Crescent ANew Rochelle, NY 10801914-632-8312800-788-2668Fax: 914-632 8419Email: david@cobcord.comwww.cobcord.com*Hooks, eyelets and stitchingrepairs only.
