62 Dr. Constable's Notes on 1 Samuel 2007 EditionIV. SAUL AND DAVID CHS. 16—31The basic theme in Samuel, that blessing, and in particular fertility of all kinds, followsfrom faithful commitment to God's revealed will, continues in this section. Howeveranother major motif now becomes more prominent. We might call it the theme of theLord's anointed."The theological thread running through Samuel and Kings is God'schoice of a leader to represent Him as He implements His covenants withIsrael." 185Saul had been God's anointed vice-regent, but with Saul's rejection David began to moveinto that position. These chapters record the gradual transition and slow transformation ofthe nation as the Israelites and others increasingly realized that David was now God'sanointed. Saul remained the Lord's anointed as long as he lived. Part of the reason Davidsucceeded was he recognized this and related to Saul accordingly. However, David toowas God's anointed though God was still preparing him to take leadership and mount thethrone. While the hero of this last half of 1 Samuel is David, Saul is also prominent. Sauldeclined as the old anointed as David arose as the new anointed."There will be many twists in the story of David's progress towards thethrone, and not a few crisis-points, yet all is told in the knowledge thatGod can put his men where he wants them to be, whether the route isdirect, or ever so circuitous." 186CHRONOLOGY OF DAVID'S LIFE 187Event Date Age ReferenceBirth 1041 0 2 Sam. 5:4-5Anointing by Samuel 1029 12 1 Sam. 16:1-13Defeat of Goliath 1024 17 1 Sam. 17Exile from Saul 1020-1011 21-30 1 Sam. 21—31Anointing as King over Judah 1011 30 2 Sam. 2:1-4Anointing as King over all Israel 1004 37 2 Sam. 5:1-3Philistines Wars 1004 37 2 Sam. 5:17-25Conquest of Jerusalem 1004 37 2 Sam. 5:6-10Mephibosheth's Move to Jerusalem 996 45 2 Sam. 9:1-13The Three Year Famine 996-993 45-48 2 Sam. 21:1-14The Ammonite Wars 993-990 48-51 2 Sam. 10—12Adultery and Murder 992 49 2 Sam. 11185 Heater, p. 117.186 Gordon, p. 150.187 Based on Merrill, Kingdom of . . ., p. 244.
