Tourist attractions<br />

Poznań is a large tourist center attracting visitors with its numerous examples of historic<br />

architecture. Around <strong>the</strong> Old Market Square <strong>the</strong>re are many renaissance buildings including<br />

<strong>the</strong> Old Town Hall and beautiful tenement houses, many of which have been turned into cafes<br />

or galleries. Poznań also h<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest ca<strong>the</strong>dral in <strong>the</strong> country – <strong>the</strong> Poznań Ca<strong>the</strong>dral, built<br />

on foundations from <strong>the</strong> 10th century. It contains <strong>the</strong> tombs of <strong>the</strong> first Polish rulers:<br />

Mieszko I, Boleslaus <strong>the</strong> Brave, Mieszko II, C<strong>as</strong>imir I <strong>the</strong> Restorer, Przemysł I and Przemysł II.<br />

There are also numerous examples of late 19th and early 20th century German architecture,<br />

such <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> Imperial C<strong>as</strong>tle (constructed in 1910 by <strong>for</strong> German Emperor William II), <strong>the</strong> Adam<br />

Mickiewicz University and <strong>the</strong> Poznań Opera House.<br />

One very unique feature of Poznań is a lake located in <strong>the</strong> very center of <strong>the</strong> city. The Lake<br />

Malta is a very popular sporting attraction where people can go canoeing and kayaking on one<br />

of <strong>the</strong> most modern regatta courses in Europe or skiing on a year-round artificial ski slope.<br />
