4 .1 Introduction<br />

<strong>Poland</strong> <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>destination</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Shared</strong> <strong>Services</strong> <strong>Centers</strong> 27<br />

<strong>Poland</strong> is recognized and appreciated by international companies <strong>as</strong> a good location <strong>for</strong> shared<br />

services centers. The companies choosing to establish <strong>the</strong>ir operations here have emph<strong>as</strong>ized<br />

such factors <strong>as</strong>: convenient location, excellent economic conditions <strong>for</strong> investment, favorable<br />

labor costs, and in particular availability of well-educated and highly-qualified human resources.<br />

According to <strong>the</strong> Polish In<strong>for</strong>mation and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ), <strong>the</strong> 300 biggest<br />

service centers in <strong>Poland</strong> already employ some 45,000 people and it is predicted that <strong>the</strong><br />

number will grow to approximately 70,000 during <strong>the</strong> next 2 years.<br />

<strong>Shared</strong> services really began developing in <strong>Poland</strong> at <strong>the</strong> turn of <strong>the</strong> 21st century,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> biggest wave of investments coming after <strong>Poland</strong>’s accession to <strong>the</strong> European Union<br />

(so far <strong>the</strong> record setting year w<strong>as</strong> 2006, when 37 companies founded <strong>the</strong>ir service centers<br />

in <strong>Poland</strong>). The main are<strong>as</strong> of specialization of <strong>Poland</strong>’s service centers include: accounting<br />

and finances, IT services and research and development.<br />
