Specific types of homeworkassignments, thorough review of individual testing results, and attention to those categories of questions that havechallenged Nahant students in past tests, are just a few ofthe improvement methods utilized.FY 2010 BudgetThe School Committee is requesting a FY 2010budget, that takes into account the present fiscal conditionsin the town and state, while ensuring the ongoingimprovement efforts are sustained. The FY 2010 budgetrequests an increase of slightly more than 4% above theFY 2009 budget, but is only 2% above the actual expensesfrom FY 2008. It is less than a percentage point above theactual expenses of FY 2007. This flat-spending hasoccurred despite rising wages, energy costs, etc. Some ofthe planned programs for FY 2010 remain unfunded, inorder to submit a responsible budget, that considers thecurrent fiscal environment and the Towns’ continuedsupport for the school, most notably the renovationproject, including the recently-completed parking anddrop-off area construction.Superintendents 2008-2009 GoalsThe School Committee has approved the goals of theSuperintendent for the current school year, to furtherreinforce the priorities set for this year. The Assembly went off without a hitch and the JohnsonSchool students certainly performed very well. Many Veterans attended the celebration. We are very appreciative of the parents who decorated the cafeteria and provided thedelicious lunch for our invited guests. The Johnson School is very happy to accept the generous gift to our Library fromthe Nahant Historical Society. If you have Legos, please call theschool. We would be very interested in giving them a new home.Christmas for A DollarI, like many of you reading, adore the Christmas season. I start my Christmasshopping right around the beginning of November. You can never start too early. These days though, a bit of a damper seems to exist over my once overly-generousChristmas budget. This year, as fate would have it, I find myself unemployed and in oneof the worst economies since the depression. What’s a girl to do?People, do not become discouraged, or lose hope. I think not. Where there is aChristmas spirit, there’s a way.I have two words for everyone “Dollar Store”! For those of us used to the softdepartment store lights that make their overpriced merchandise appear to be, well, priceless. For those of us used to being lured into the store’s holiday sales, through acoupon’s promise of 20% off. Do not turn up your nose to this gem of a secret, or underestimatethe magnitude of this shopping haven.I recently re-discovered the delights of this delicious little dollar wonder, twomonths into my unemployed bliss. I had blindly wandered into this dollar-world-Meccafor a birthday card. Was I in for a shock! Not only were there cards galore, but therewere chotchke’s as far as the eye could see. Decorations, trinkets, stemware, party favorsand gifts in every shape, size and color. You will be amazed at what $13.71 can buy youat this little piece of heaven. As I walked out of my local “Dollar Of Wonders” on the Lynnway, I heaved a sighof relief. True, many of my friends, family and loved ones would be receiving “just” acard from me this year. However, when you’re on a budget, isn’t it nice to have options?Submitted by Georgia Arnold
