Class A ReportsSaturdayʼs two A-class <strong>Point</strong>Races included a man overboard,a broken hiking stick, a fiercetacking duel between severalboats, a couple of ʻnear-missesʼ,and most importantly, an exquisiteday for racing. In <strong>the</strong> firstrace, five boats crossed <strong>the</strong> startingline, led by Duck with DarcieWatson at <strong>the</strong> helm but was over<strong>the</strong> line too early and lost one ofits crew-members overboard.Fortunately, a quick reaction byDarcie and <strong>the</strong> GLPYCCommittee Boat resolved apotentially dangerous incidentand, with its entire crew, Ducksailed back into <strong>the</strong> race.On <strong>the</strong> windward leg toSeaflower, Kite, sailed by Bradand Jay Washburn, Bradʼs sonNicholas, and A-class alumnusDoug Hope, rounded <strong>the</strong> firstmark with a slight lead overSwallow, skippered by FrankMurphy, Jr. with a crew of NuffyMurphy and Mark Young. Kitewas able to hold on to its slimadvantage on <strong>the</strong> downwind spinnakerrun to <strong>the</strong> red can off of<strong>Club</strong>house <strong>Point</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> closereach to a leeward mark off ofMain Beach. The order of finishwas: Kite, Swallow, Pelican,Duck, and Sanderling.Given <strong>the</strong> wonderful conditions,a second race was a must.The first windward leg toSeaflower was reminiscent of somany classic A-boat competitions.Near <strong>the</strong> rounding ofSeaflower, Pelican, sailed by Jayand Suzy Fisher and SteveMcAleer, barely crossed <strong>the</strong>sterns of Kite and Swallow on aport tack. Swallow snuck aroundSeaflower in first, followed closebehind by Kite and Pelican.Swallow held on to its smalladvantage to win <strong>the</strong> secondrace. The order of finish was:Swallow, Kite, Pelican, Duck andSanderling.Sundayʼs Commodoreʼs Cupfor <strong>the</strong> A-boats, which took placeon ano<strong>the</strong>r spectacular day with amoderate southwest breeze,turned out to be amatch race: betweenCormorant and Duck.Grondin/BurkardʼsCormorant won <strong>the</strong>Commodoreʼs Cup bycompleting <strong>the</strong>ʻOlympic-style courseʼof Seaflower, red canoff <strong>Club</strong>house <strong>Point</strong>,leeward mark off ofMain Beach,Seaflower, leewardmark, and home.Christian Driscoll, Broker Assoc.Licensed in CT and RI.
