A cast on my left leg quickly forced me 

to pay new respect to old skills, such 

as walking, navigating stairs and bathing. 

One day I propped my crutches 

against the towel bar and plotted the 

maneuvers needed to get most of me 

into the tub, whole and unmaimed, 

while keeping the cast dry. Eventually I 

had every move planned. The launch 

strategy was perfect, and I finally luxuriated 

in the warm water, the cast elevated 

high and dry on a stool. As I was 

congratulating myself, I noticed my 

right foot underwater complete with 

sock and running shoe.

Hats Off to a Tough Russian 

Just amazing to think of a tabby doing 

the distance greater than that of the 

Iditarod in worse conditions than what 

our teams and mushers encounter on 

the average! A Russian family has 

been reunited with their pet cat after it 

made a 1300 mile trek across Siberia 

to get home. The two year old male cat 

called Kuzya ran away from the Efremov 

family when they took him with 

them from Olenyok to Yakutsk in Eastern 

Russia for the summer. After 

weeks of searching they finally decided 

the cat was dead and set off 

back to Olenyok at the end of the summer. 

But the Regnum news agency 

reported that three months later the cat 

turned up on the doorstep, tired and 

thin but otherwise healthy. One of the 

Efremov family said: “There were bite 

marks on the cat’s tail and his claws 

had been worn away to nothing. He is 

also nervous now about going outsideand 

always seems to be looking for a 

safe hiding place. “It’s unbelievable 

that he made it across the Siberian 

woods and hills and crossed rivers and 

lakes to get home!”

How Long Does It Take An Oyster to 

Make a Pearl? 

Any mollusk with a shell can create a 

pearl. In fact, the same materials that 

create the animal’s shell go into the 

pearl itself. Contrary to popular opinion, 

it’s not always an irritating grain of 

sand that prods an oyster into making 

a pearl. More likely, a stray food particle 

gets stuck under the shell. The mollusk 

coats the irritant with layers of aragonite 

and conchiolin, and the composite 

material is called nacre. That is 

what gives the pearls their luster. At 

least one species of oyster can secrete 

nacre over an irritant at a rate of about 

0.1mm to 0.2mm per year. But mollusks 

rarely create pearls naturally— 

only one out of 10,000 animals will produce 

a pearl in the wild. Since the 

1930’s , the vast majority of pearls 

have been created with the help of humans. 

Cultured pearls are created by

shell into a mature oyster. The bead or 

shell becomes the irritant around which 

the oyster naturally forms layers of nacre. 

The bigger the irritant, the bigger 

the final pearl. Successfully implanted 

oysters are returned to the ocean or a 

lake to grow the pearls. The pearls are 

harvested anywhere from one to three 

years after the implantation, depending 

on conditions in the pearl farm and the 

size of the pearls desired.

The Quest To Find 

The Best Checkout Line 

Retailers are trying several new plans 

to reduce the lengths of their checkout 

lines. They want to please customers, 

but some stores also want to encourage 

customers to shop in person rather 

than go online to buy. The percentage 

of shoppers who buy online is growing. 

Store managers say self checkout 

helps, but some people don’t like it. 

Some stores have copied the Apple 

Inc. stores with roaming personnel using 

hand held devices for mobile 

checkout, but that doesn’t work in a 

grocery store. Other stores have personnel 

come to a long line to prescan 

items while the shoppers are waiting in 

line. What studies show– Having one 

line that flows into three registers 

makes checkout faster. If one register 

has a problem, the other two are still 

moving customers. The plan works 

even better if the line flows into six 

cash registers. Oddly, however, people 

still prefer to wait in the individual line 

of their choice, even though they experience 

remorse if the line turns out to 

be slower. At Envirosell, a consultancy, 

they timed shoppers in line with a stopwatch 

to determine how impatient they 

get. They found that up to two or three 

minutes, shoppers’ estimates of how 

long they waited was pretty accurate.
