AssetIncreasingValuethrough managed reservoir exploitationWeatherford’s MetalSkin ® open-hole liner allows you to landoptimum size casing in the reservoir after drilling through troublezones. The system is run and tied back to the previous casing toisolate pressure anomalies. The result is reduced well costs andoptimized completion design that maximizes production. This solid expandable liner can be used as a drilling or productionliner, in planned or contingency operations, in new or existingwells. It can be expanded across trouble zones and allows drillingto continue without loss of hole size. Access to new or existingreservoirs is faster and cheaper than alternative solutions, puttingyour well into production more quickly and with larger capacity forfaster payout and improved ROI.Weatherford’s MetalSkin open-hole liner system can help you costeffectivelyisolate trouble zones, increase production capacity andaccess deeper reserves in mature fields. And, it incorporates unique,field-proven Weatherford design features such as expandablecentralizers that improve cementing and zonal isolation whilemaximizing system reliability, even in extreme conditions.2 © 2009–2011 Weatherford. MetalSkin ® Open-Hole Liner SystemSolid design:Taking performance to the next levelClients who have used the MetalSkin open-hole liner attribute its success to key design features such as:• Collapsible expansion cone that can beconstructed and de-constructed down hole• Expansion pressure without the need fora dart seal• Expansion tool enables pressurizing the linerahead of the cone during expansion• Metal-to-metal seals for more robust connections• Reduced shoe OD facilitates running intortuous well paths• Seamless pipe maximizes performance intough downhole conditionsSolid ResultsMetalSkin system isolates high-pressure shale zone, increaseshole size by 43%A MetalSkin open-hole liner effectively isolated an overpressured shale zone directly under a 7-in. casingshoe and above the reservoir during an operation in the prolific Hassi Messaoud field. The expandablesystem enabled the operator to drill with a larger, high-performance BHA, which created a 5-in. ratherthan 3 1/2-in. hole. Use of the larger drill bit accelerated drilling, reduced rig time and operating costs andhelped increase the production rate to 1,056 BOPD.Solid ResultsMetalSkin system improves zonal isolation, maximizes reservoircontact and increases production 250%Weatherford ran a MetalSkin open-hole liner system across the horizontal section of a well with ahistory of differential sticking issues in an effort to improve zonal isolation, maximize reservoir contactand ultimately, increase production. Multilateral boreholes were drilled from windows milled in theexpandable liner and the recompleted well promptly put back on line. Productivity more than tripled, fromapproximately 2,000 to 7,000 BOPD.© 2009–2011 Weatherford. All rights reserved. 3

MetalSkin ® Open-Hole Liner SystemDelivering solid answerswith the MetalSkin open-hole liner systemUsing standard rig operations, the MetalSkin open-hole liner system is installed using conventionalcasing-handling tools. The expansion tool and first joint of casing is simply picked-up from the pipe rackas a pre-assembled component.Running the linerWhen the drilled hole has been conditioned andis ready for pipe, the liner system is made up tothe required length and hung in the rotary table. The expansion tool is pre-installed in the linershoe. A false rotary is built and an inner string isrun inside the liner. The inner string attaches tothe expansion tool and the liner is run to depth.Since the cone is assembled downhole, the ODof the system is reduced, thus allowing the linerto run in wells with tortuous geometry.Expanding the linerOnce the liner is on bottom, applied pressureassembles the cone and creates the launcher. The cement job is performed and when completed, hydraulic pressure expands the liner from the bottom up. The top of theliner expands and anchors into the previous casing. No darts are requiredto achieve hydraulic integrity, the pipe is thick walled and seamless andthe connections exceed API proposed standards. If used as a productionliner, completion procedures can begin after expansion, or the shoe can bedrilled out and drilling operations can continue as planned. Each connection of the MetalSkinopen-hole liner is inspected prior tomakeup and after it has been torquedto ensure the integrity of the postexpansionseal.© 2009–2011 Weatherford. Elastomeric seal elements.Expanding against the previouscasing, these elements providea reliable liner top.Premium, seamlessexpandable casing.Thick-wall, high-grade,seamless expandable casingenhances the post-expansionperformance propertiesand increase ductility andtoughness.Slim-shoe design. The cementing valve shoehouses an expansion coneand is engineered to maximizerunning clearance—reducingsurge and the possibility ofdifferential sticking.Reliable hydraulic seal.A simple gate valve creates areliable, hydraulic seal withinthe expandable liner—ratherthan relying on a dart to createand maintain the system’spressure seal.Expandable-liner/runningtoolinterface. The expandableliner is secured to the runningtool by a connection in theshoe track. The landing stringconnects to the liner, notthe cone. This configurationeliminates the risk of prematureexpansion caused by upwardmovement of the cone whenworking through tight spotsduring run-in.Collapsible cone.Deconstructing the cone—akey contingency feature—facilitates retrieval through theunexpanded liner, if necessary.© 2009–2011 Weatherford. MetalSkin ® Open-Hole Liner SystemAdvancing the designof solid-expandable liner connectionsWeatherford established the Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) Technology Center to define moreprecisely the performance parameters of threaded connections in solid-expandable liners and ultimatelyenhance their design.Conventional methods of testing threadedconnections fall short on two fronts—creatingsamples that accurately reflect their downholecounterparts and adequately accounting forfactors that can affect connection performance, such as high-dogleg severity, variations inpre- and post-expansion loads, pressure andconstraint (fixed-free versus fixed-fixed).Capable of replicating mechanical, variable-loadand fixed-load liner expansion, the dynamic loadexpansion (DLX) simulator (patent pending)produces samples that accurately reflect theirdownhole counterparts, translating into moreaccurate test results. The one-of-a-kind simulator has two 15-ft (4.6-m) stroke cylindersthat apply compression to the work piece; a third applies tension andadjusts for length change during expansion. The capability to maintain apre-expansion load in front of the expansion cone and a post-expansionload behind the cone makes the DLX uniquely realistic.Unlike conventional testing ofexpandable connections, the DLXsimulator can uniquely and accuratelyreplicate downhole conditions that theexpanding casing experiences in areal-well environment. The first of its kind, Weatherford’s OCTG Technology Center usesdata from the specialized testing equipment to design next-generationconnections with better strength and sealing properties—before, duringand after expansion—relative to their conventional equivalents.© 2009–2011 Weatherford.
