The Greenfield Road architectural and planning firm hasbeen involved with a number of projects throughout the metro area. Locally, it's best known for its work onthe ‘field Zone, the new community youth center which is set to open this spring.Partner Sam Dorchen recently talked about DMA, its projects and its history.Tell us about your involvement with the ‘field Zone.Working closely with Scott Griffin, the creative force and driving energy behind the project,Dorchen/Martin Associates provided the construction plans for the ‘field Zone Youth Center — using a fewlocal engineering consultants as necessary. As the principal in charge — replacing Tim Coon who leftDMA when the drawings were close to completion — I continued Tim's efforts in providing our architecturalexpertise and knowledge. We're quite proud of our relationship with Scott Griffin and the city ofSouthfield's staff and will continue to provide services as the need arises. What other notable projects have you been involved with recently? What is your primary servicearea?DMA has provided many new buildings and additions and renovations to existing buildings for the city ofSterling Heights including the city hall, library, police building, nature center, Seniors Active Life Center,District Court 41A and the very dramatic new Central Fire Station on Van Dyke and 17 Mile Road. Wehave a long-standing and successful relationship with the McDonald's Corporation and the Chrysler Realtyarm of the Chrysler Corp. Our involvement with those two major clients has allowed us to designnumerous and unusual fast food restaurants in the greater Detroit area as well as designs for autodealerships in this area as well as in other states. The new Golling Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge facility onTelegraph Road is one of the largest built in the country. We have also designed multifamily developmentsin more than 14 states in concert with a few local developers, for projects ranging in size from 300 to2,000 living units — including community-related buildings. Another important relationship for the 20 yearsin DMA's history has been our work and association with local hospitals — Beaumont, St. John's,Crittenton and Providence. Most recently we are providing services at their new campus in Novi for theirnew facility with which Providence has partnered with St. John's.Talk about your company's history. We understand this is an anniversary year for you.Twenty years ago, Frank Martin and I formed our architectural firm with the strict focus of remainingdiverse in the type of projects we would undertake — we did not want to specialize in any one type ofuse. Frank and I had developed important client relationships, as noted above, and felt that we couldweather severe economic down times if we maintained our diversity. We felt the residential, municipaland commercial sectors were different enough to support our firm if one use or another were to suffer. So far, we have proven our decision to be correct.
