DSE 5xxx Configuration Software ManualThe resistive fuel level senders supported by the 5xxx series controllers are devices that translatefuel level into resistance. A change in fuel level translates directly to a change in the resistance ofthe sender. In the case of a parallel sided fuel tank, an accurate measure of the fuel level caneasily be made, however as shown in the example below, this is not the case with non-parallelsided fuel tanks. Therefore it is recommended that only parallel sided fuel tanks are used toensure correct fuel level detection.The fuel sender measuresthe distance between the topof the tank and the fuellevel. Typically, they use aball float.In this example, the distancebetween the top of the tankand the level of the fuel is50% of the height of thetank. The fuel level senderwill report the tank correctlyas being 50% full.For a parallel-sided tank likethis one, 50% distancebetween the top of the tankand the level of the fuel willoccur when the tank is 50%full of fuel.In this example, the distancebetween the top of the tankand the level of the fuel isagain 50% of the height ofthe tank, the fuel levelsender will report the tank asbeing 50% full.However, as the bottom ofthe tank is curved, theactual amount of fuel in thetank is only about 40%.
