The Spectroquant ® analysis systemOur quality claim for your safety.Quality today plays a decisive role in water andwastewater analysis. After all, you must be ableto rely on the measurement results. Our comprehensive range of tools for qualityassurance can ensure that your measurementvalues become safe, reproducible, and recognizedanalytical results. For us quality starts right at the beginning, with the production. Strict controls ensure aconsistently high quality. Guaranteed. And,if you wish, you can have this in writing, too:lot certificate, quality certificate, test seal, and validation of the method of analysis allvouch for our claim. And, to enable you to check our qualitywherever and whenever you wish, we also offera comprehensive range of special equipment. With our PhotoCheck, CombiCheck, andPipeCheck product ranges, the ready-to-usestandard solutions, or the thermosensor, you’reable to check the quality of our media as wellas your own working procedures from start tofinish. Only by ensuring the security of theoverall system is it possible to guarantee theaccuracy of your analytical results. As you can see, only when every aspect closelymeshes with the others and every componentmeets up to the stringent quality claim can theoverall system be said to be secure and accurate.3

The test kitsSimply comprehensive. No matter whether drinking water, surface water, process water, municipal or industrial wastewater, waterrun-offs from waste dumps, waste, or soil is involved –over 130 different Spectroquant ® test kits and numerousapplications are available as competent solutions allprovided by one supplier. The scope of parameters isfinely tuned to the requirements of everyday practiceand is constantly extended further still.Ease of use, excellent descriptions of the workingsteps, and thus safe in their application –these are the characteristic features of theSpectroquant ® test kits. We’ve even taken careof the calibration for you: all test kits are preprogrammedin the photometers.Validation gives you that sense of securityAll Spectroquant ® analysis methods are validated, which means that the quality is definedand secured. Validation data have beendetermined for each individual Spectroquant ®test kit and are documented in the validationcertificate. Many Spectroquant ® analytical methodsconform with the relevant standards and arethus comparable. This gives you additionalsecurity.4

Sum parameterssuch as COD are conventional parameters. Thechemistry contained in Spectroquant ® productsconforms with the relevant standards and bearsthe “USEPA Approved” seal of quality issued bythe US Environmental Protection Agency. Thedivision into seven different measuring rangesfor COD enables you to obtain accurate resultswithout having to dilute your samples.Nutrientssuch as nitrogen and phosphorus play anessential role in all types of water. The samplepreparationprocedure necessary to determinethe total concentrations is already integratedin the Spectroquant ® cell test.Hazardous substancessuch as cadmium, lead, chromate, and cyanidemust be determinable even in the smallest tracequantities – another task readily accomplishedby the Spectroquant ® test kits.Heavy metalsmust be detected in the wastewater emanatingfrom electroplating and textile-processingfacilities. The correct sample pretreatment playsan essential role here. Spectroquant ® crack setscan break up even the most demanding samplesfor analysis.Anionssuch as nitrate, nitrite, chloride, fluoride, andsulfate are of relevance not just in the area ofdrinking water processing. A practically orientedselection of Spectroquant ® test kits makes surethat all requirements are taken care of.Principle of the chemical reaction:Reagent(cuprizone)+Sample/analyte(Cu ion)=blue dye, which is thenmeasured in the photometer5

The cell test kitsSimply user-friendly.Spectroquant ® cell tests are characterized bytheir high degree of user-friendliness. Virtuallyall of the reagents required for the analysis arealready contained in the cell. The bar codeprinted on each cell makes it unmistakeable, and when the cell is inserted into the photometerthe correct method is automatically selected, thus avoiding the risk of mix-ups.PackagingThe packaging provides an ideal protection ofthe cells during transport and against variationsin temperature and humidity. The label on theoutside gives important details on the contentsand safety, risk phrases in symbol form and inwriting, the batch number, and the shelf-life ofthe test kit (up to three years) at a glance.Package insertAll the information of relevance for you – forinstance the reaction principle, exact operatinginstructions, area of application, the influenceof foreign ions, and data on the accuracy – arepresented in an easily surveyable form in thepackage insert.Cell labelParameters and item numbers, risk phrases andcontents, and the most important thing of all,the bar code - that’s a lot of information givenin a very small space. The reaction cells are made ofspecial high-quality glass withexcellent optical properties.Additional reagentsOther reagents required for the determination orfor the sample preparation are included packedin easy-to-handle metering bottles.6

The reagent test kitsSimply inexpensive.Spectroquant ® reagent tests contain highlystable, ready-to-use reagent mixtures packagedin a user-friendly way. The ability to select thecell format makes the measurement range highlyvariable. The linearity of the calibration functionis tested for each individual cell format. TheAutoSelector contained in each package bearsa bar code that ensures that the correct methodis selected in the photometer. In many cases, thanks to the use of 50-mm cells the limit ofdetection is shifted right down to the ppb range.Spectroquant ® test kits can be used in everyspectrophotometer and also in photometersfrom other suppliers.ReagentsThe reagents themselves are either liquid orsolid and are added to the sample by meansof a dropper, pipette, or metering spoon. Anextremely long shelf-life (up to three years) andthe avoidance of the need to store the kits underrefrigeration are further advantages. The package contains all thenecessary reagents. The operatingprocedure is described in detailin the package insert.7

Higherdigestion temperatures are thus not appropriatein this case. The conventional boiling time is120 minutes: however, as practical experimentshave shown, most wastewater samples arealready adequately digested within the spaceof just 20 minutes.Besides the standard method we therefore offera COD rapid-digestion method that has thefollowing advantages:• Standard-compliant digestion temperature(148°C)• No additional investments are necessary, since standard thermoreactors can be used.• Depending on the number of samples, theuser can choose between thermoreactors withtwelve or 24 wells, meaning that a largenumber of samples can be processed simultaneously.Further details and an extensive description aregiven in the COD rapid-digestion applicationdata sheet, available on request.151 min120 minChoose between the standard methodand the COD rapid-digestion method51 min20 minStandard methodCOD rapid-digestionmethodMeasuring timeCooling timeDigestion time21

The quality guaranteeSimply reliable.Quality is second nature for us. Over 100 years ofcompetence and leadership in the field of analysis areinconceivable without the high quality demands wemake of ourselves. We are a company that has beencertified according to DIN EN ISO 9001 ever since1992 and according to DIN EN ISO 14001 since 2001.The quality of the Spectroquant ® test kitsStringent raw-material controls, effective inprocesscontrols, and thoroughly documentedend-product controls are the guarantees for theconsistently high quality of our test kits. Everybatch that comes off the production lines isgiven its own batch certificate, meaning thatyou do not need to run a quality control ondelivery of the kits yourself. The batch certificates, which you can find on the internet athttp://photometry.merck.de, can also be usedfor official audit purposes. Many Spectroquant ® tests are officially recognizedby the American enviromental-protectionagency as suited for determinations in drinkingwater and wastewater and bear the corresponding“USEPA Approved” seal of quality.22

Validation of the analytical methodsValidation here means the testing of theperformance capacity of a given analyticalmethod. The characteristic data of the methodobtained in our development laboratories –measuring range, limit of detection, accuracy, selectivity, sensitivity, calibration function, androbustness of the method – are all documented. These data are quality characteristics andform the basis for quality assurance in routineanalysis.Certificate for the suitability ofSpectroquant ® test kits for self-monitoringThe characteristic method data for each testkit, determined according to standardizedprocedures, are summarized in a quality certificate. This certificate guarantees the consistentquality of all batches that have been suppliedto customers so far. Both the quality certificatesas well as batch certificates for eachSpectroquant ® test kit can be accessed on theweb at http://photometry.merck.de.Quality of the Spectroquant ® photometersMeasuring rangeWorking range within which the methodyields reliable results. The same principles also apply to the productionof the photometers. Each instrument is accompaniedby a test report that not only documentsthe optical tests (photometric accuracy, linearity, reproducibility, wavelength accuracy), but alsoconfirms the electrical safety.Sensitivityindicates the degree to which a resultchanges relative to the signal of themeasurement system. This can be shownin quantitative terms by the gradient ofthe calibration curve.Lower Limit of Detection (LLD)the smallest content of an analyte, the result for which may be taken asindicating the presence of the analytewith a sufficient statistical probability.Method Detection Limit (MDL)is that content of an analyte, the resultfor which may be taken as indicatingthe presence of the analyte with a highstatistical probability (equivalent to thelower limit of the measuring range).Confidence intervalEvery measurement value bears therisk of error, even the results for thecalibration curve. The confidenceinterval expresses the range in whichthe “true” curve lies.Standard deviation of the methodabsolute measure of the precision.Coefficient of variation for the methodrelative measure of the precision.Accuracymeasure for the approximation of theresult to the “true” value, a summaricalterm for precision and accuracy.23

Quality assuranceSimply start to finish.Measurement results are principally prone to errors. Onlythe taking of start-to-finish quality-assurance measuresensures that the results of your measurements becomesecure and reproducible analysis results. The componentsof the professional AQA concept are proven means for yourown Internal Quality Control (IQC) measures, such as theones required e.g by the A 704 technical data sheet ofthe German Wastewater Engineering Association.AQA without compromisesA start-to-finish quality check must encompassthe entire system, testing both the instrumentsand equipment as well as the operating andhandling. We supply the tools required for thisjob. You yourself decide with which regularityand for which parameters you performAnalytical Quality Assurance. In the event that the results of the quality checkdoes not meet up to the required specifications, the results of all analyses conducted since thelast check must be considered doubtful. Runningchecks on a regular basis can help avoid suchuncertainty. We make the job easy for you. The toolsnecessary to check the instruments and theentire analysis system are available in readyto-usepackages.AQA2 [4w]:The photometer showsthe next AQA checkin 4 weeks’ time.24

You have the choiceIn the AQA1 mode the photometer is checkedwith the aid of certified colour standards(Spectroquant ® PhotoCheck). In the AQA2 mode the entire system ischecked comprehensively by means of certifiedmultiparameter standards (Spectroquant ®CombiCheck).Documentation without gapsThe performance of the AQA operations isdocumented in compliance with the GLPregulations in the form of a measurement report.Once successfully controlled for quality, eachmeasurement result is given the “AQA” suffixin the measurement report. This securelydocuments that the system has been properlytested. In the AQA3 mode the quality assurance ofthe overall system is obligatory. By entering anumber combination (secret code) you can makesure that the photometer refuses to performany further measurements until the prescribedquality-control measurements have been made.Only after the quality-assurance check hasbeen run is the method released for furthermeasurements. That’s internal qualityassurance at its best.AQA3 mode:Further measurements can berun only after the secret codehas been entered and thequality-control procedurescompleted.25

The tools for quality testsSimply correct. With Spectroquant ® PhotoCheckyou can check the photometersand thus secure the accuracyof your analysis results.Checking the photometerSpectroquant ® PhotoCheckThe photometers must be checked for theirwavelength accuracy and linearity of theabsorbance measurement. Spectroquant ®PhotoCheck comprises a complete set of coloursolutions with an excellent long-term stability. The traceability of this test medium to internationalstandards is guaranteed by checkingthem in a reference spectrophotometer, whichin turn is monitored with primary standards(NIST standards).Spectroquant ® PhotoCheck is thus suitable as asecondary standard for the control of inspection, measuring, and test equipment in the sense ofDIN EN ISO 9001 and 14001.Checking the thermoreactorThermosensor for TR 420/620The temperature sensor measures the currenttemperature in the compartment of the thermoreactorand comparing it with the specifiedtemperature. The results can be transmittedto a PC for documentation purposes.Checking the pipettesSpectroquant ® PipeCheckPipettes must be checked at regular intervals inthe context of Internal Quality Control (IQC).Usually these checks take the form of weighingthe liquid volume on a calibrated precisionbalance. However, such a balance is not alwaysreadily available. With the Spectroquant ® PipeCheck you can checkthe pipettes and document the values appropriately, thus making an important contribution tosecuring the accuracy of your analysis results.5.0-mL PipeCheck cellReference cellTo check your pipettes, inject5.0 mL of the pipette volumeinto the Spectroquant ® 5.0-mLPipeCheck cell. The measuredabsorbance must match thatof the reference cell.26

Checking the complete systemStandard solutionsOur comprehensive range of ready-to-usestandard solutions is naturally also at yourdisposal. Thesestandards can be directly traced back to NISTstandards. Each CombiCheck package contains a standardsolution and an addition solution. When thecheck shows the specified concentration of thestandard solution, the complete analysis systemis correct. In the event of any deviations, youhave to go “trouble-shooting”.Using the addition solution can identifymeasurement errors that are due to the matrix(e.g. the presence of interfering substances). In the case that the recovery rate is insufficient, this interference must be eliminated by dilutingthe sample or by taking the correspondingsample-pretreatment measures.Spectroquant ® CombiCheck 80to check COD, nitrate, andphosphate in high concentrationOrdering informationCat.
