We have the tools ofand the fit4more principles to guideus and the resources of a world classcompany at our disposal. I see no reasonwhy we cannot achieve and surpass thetargets we had set <strong>for</strong> ourselves last year.As I see it there are a few things on whichwe need to concentrate in order tosucceed. The first thing is discipline. If wedo not have discipline in our lives we cannever succeed. If you look at the successfulcountries of the world you will realize thatthe cornerstone of their success isdiscipline. Without discipline all ef<strong>for</strong>ts arewasted and while you might be very busyand work till late at night if you are notdisciplined you cannot produce the desiredresults. It was Thoman Jefferson who said“That government is best which governsthe least, because its people disciplinethemselves.” This is also true <strong>for</strong>companies. If you are disciplined in yourwork you will not need constant guidancefrom the top.Another important factor is productivity.This is the benchmark <strong>for</strong> investment in acountry. You might find cheap labor in acountry but if it is not productive accordingto world standards then investors will bereluctant to invest. Now there are worldfigures on the productivity index ofdifferent countries and they <strong>for</strong>m the basis<strong>for</strong> international investments. We need toincrease our productivity by every meansat our disposal and the tool providedby the company should be used as itensures maximum productivity andminimum waste of time and resources.I have always said that smart work is betterthan hard work and now as you aresteaming ahead to surpass your targets togive us a pleasant surprise you will do wellto think about smart work. This is the sumof all the qualities described above.Increasing productivity through disciplineand smart thinking. Not wasting time inbeating around the bush but facing theproblem squarely and finding lastingsolutions. One type of treatment ormodality of treatment may be chosenover another <strong>for</strong> its advantage in cureand <strong>for</strong> its advantage in minimizing sideeffects. For treatment purposes, mostradiation oncology departmentsgenerally use a linear accelerator thatproduces high energy electrons and X-rays (about 100 times more energeticthan diagnostic X-rays). The radiationbeam is shaped using a complexcollimator device (typically a multileafcollimator – MLC), while the patient lieson a high-precision table. Every day almost four millionpassengers use the over 200 kilometerlong railway system of the two largestrailroad companies (MTRC and KCRC).This is one of the most intensively usedsystems in the world. Some of the linestransport 70,000 passengers per hourduring commuting hours. <strong>Siemens</strong> isone of the prime partners of the railoperators: as supplier of the rollingstock and the traction power, thesignaling, control and communicationssystems, and the electrification of theroutes. <strong>Siemens</strong> is also a key providerof the communications systems <strong>for</strong> trainstations.Just as the railway system, the roadnetwork also has one of the highesttraffic densities in the world. <strong>Siemens</strong>has been awarded a contract todevelop, deliver and install an extensivetraffic control system <strong>for</strong> the fastgrowingadministrative districts of TuenMun and Yuen Long in Hong Kong. AtCHINAthe moment, the traffic light systemremains uncoordinated - i.e. eachintersection is individually controlled.That will soon change, however, thanksto the new Urban Traffic Control (UTC)system, which will regulate vehicle andpedestrian traffic and coordinate trafficlights. It will reduce vehicle waitingtimes at major intersections, which inturn will cut down on driving time andincrease the efficiency of the roadnetwork. The UTC system will also belinked up to the existing urban railnetwork in the administrative districts,which moves around 400,000passengers each day. Following theplanned completion of the UTC systemin August 2008, <strong>Siemens</strong> engineers willtake on responsibility <strong>for</strong> systemmaintenance <strong>for</strong> a period of five years.- <strong>Siemens</strong> has also set up a trafficmonitoring system <strong>for</strong> the AberdeenTunnel in the southern part of HongKong that is equipped with sensors andintelligent cameras that automaticallymeasure traffic density and speed, andalso identify and report problems suchas accidents and traffic jams. Inaddition, LED displays are used as anin<strong>for</strong>mation system <strong>for</strong> car drivers.<strong>Siemens</strong> and China Railway Signal &Communication Corp. are currentlyequipping the approximately 25-kilometer long underground Metro Line10 with state-of-the-art control,signaling, and safety technology. Thesystem will make it possible to achieveshort intervals between successivetrains and fast adaptability topassenger volumes. Line 10 will gointo operation <strong>for</strong> the SummerOlympics in 2008 and will link the siteof the games with the center of Beijingand other subway lines. The scope ofequipment being supplied by <strong>Siemens</strong>includes a train control system, theoperational center, signal boxes, radiosystems, and onboard components <strong>for</strong>the 34 trains that run on Line 10. Thisis the second subway project in Chinathat involves the innovative traincontrol system from <strong>Siemens</strong> (the firstwas the Guangzhou Metro). <strong>Siemens</strong>has also been awarded a contract <strong>for</strong>high-speed trains: Together with itsChinese partner Tangshan Locomotive& Rolling Stock Works, <strong>Siemens</strong> willbuild 60 trains (top speed: 300 km/h)that will initially be used on the Beijing-Tianjin route beginning in 2008.Tianjin will be one of the sites <strong>for</strong> theOlympic soccer matches in 2008. Thetrains will be based on the Velaroplat<strong>for</strong>m from <strong>Siemens</strong>, which housesthe motors, brakes and trans<strong>for</strong>merson the undercarriage. The advantageof this plat<strong>for</strong>m is that it enables thetrains to offer 25 percent more space<strong>for</strong> passengers without having toincrease the length of the trains.Infrastructure maintenance costs arealso kept low through the use of theplat<strong>for</strong>m.In 2004 the Shanghai airport’sTransrapid maglev rail link also wentinto commercial operation. The entire control systemshould be ready <strong>for</strong> operation by the endof 2006.<strong>Siemens</strong> has also been awarded a contractto deliver eight Velaro-type RUS high-speedtrains to Russian Railways (RZD) and alsoassume responsibility <strong>for</strong> theirmaintenance <strong>for</strong> a period of 30 years.Contract volume <strong>for</strong> the trains and servicewill total approximately €600 million.Designed to travel at 250 km/h, these newtrains will be used initially on the Moscow-St. Petersburg route, and later along theroute between Moscow and NishniNovgorod. The Velaro plat<strong>for</strong>m offers theadvantage of having all drive equipmentmounted on the undercarriage, whichenables the trains to offer 20 to 25 percentmore space <strong>for</strong> seating, without havingto increase their length. Maintenance costsare also reduced due to lower axle loads.Domodedovo International Airport is theleader among Moscow's threeinternational airports in terms of passengerand cargo traffic - and <strong>Siemens</strong> has beenawarded the contract to install a state-ofthe-artparking management system <strong>for</strong>1,400 parking spaces at Domodedovo.Plans are already in place to expand thesystem in the future to enable drivers topay <strong>for</strong> parking with their credit cards, <strong>for</strong>example. Sheremetyevo Airport has beenbenefiting from a <strong>Siemens</strong> video-dockingsystem since 2003. The systemautomatically provides pilots withguidance in<strong>for</strong>mation during the dockingprocess, thereby helping to increase airportcapacity, plane safety and the safety offlight and ground personnel. The systemuses video sensors and an imageprocessing unit that locates and monitorsaircraft approaching the gate. Pilots areguided via an LED display, which is locatednear the gate and is easy to see.BERLINEurope's most modern trafficmanagement center and traffic controlcenter are located at Tempelhof Airportin Berlin, where data from 22 trafficcomputers, 2,000 traffic lights, andhundreds of <strong>Siemens</strong> Traffic Eye infraredsensors and video cameras fromthroughout the Berlin metropolitan areacomes together. Specialists at the trafficcontrol center use the data to adjust andregulate electronic traffic signs andtraffic lights. Thecompany received a complaint thata consumer had bought a soap boxthat was empty. Immediately theauthorities isolated the problem tothe assembly line, which transportedall the packaged boxes of soap to thedelivery department. For somereason, one soap box went throughthe assembly line empty.Management asked its engineers tosolve the problem. This system, which does not interferewith computer users, will make it possible <strong>for</strong> computers to recognize problems and externalattacks by themselves, and then take corrective measures within seconds. The completeautoimmune system, which will be used <strong>for</strong> the first time at the end of this year, is beingdeveloped by <strong>Siemens</strong> Business Services (SBS) and <strong>Siemens</strong> IT Services consists of four components,three of which are already on the market. All such incidents are there<strong>for</strong>e archived, so if a problem occurs, the Service Engine searches all the databases <strong>for</strong> asuitable solution and then applies it in the <strong>for</strong>m of updates <strong>for</strong> example.Integrated Motor <strong>for</strong> Ironing Clothes with Power Steam<strong>Siemens</strong> has introduced an iron with an integrated steam generator. The appliance offers all the advantagesof a larger and more expensive steam ironing station with a separate water tank. The innovation in the“slider steam generator,” as the system is known, is a motor inside the water tank that operates a pump.The five-watt motor, which isn't much larger than a postage stamp, moves a small piston up and down toproduce up to 40 grams of steam per minute. Even as the water level goes down, the power steam doesn’ttaper off like it does in most conventional steam irons. A single push of a but-ton on the handle is enoughto re-lease a constant jet of steam from the holes on the sole of the iron. Even up-right steaming of delicatefabrics is possible without their coming into contact with the sole of the iron. The new iron can also beordered with an automatic cut-off feature. The “Eyetec” system is equipped with an infrared detector that’s complementedby an optical sensor capable of recognizing motion patterns up to 15 meters away. Sophisticatedalgorithms are used to evaluate these patterns and determine their relative plausibility. If an alarmis triggered, the detector archives the images so that they can later be used to trace the cause ofan incident. At the International Fire and Security Exhibition and Conference (IFSEC) in Birmingham,Eyetec re-cently was honored with the Security Industry Award. Developed by <strong>Siemens</strong> BuildingTechnologies, Eyetec is the world’s only dual-principle motion detector that combines infrared andoptical sensor technology. Because of this combination, the system almost eliminates the risk offalse alarms. And while many conventional motion detectors only notice infrared radia-tion, suchas that caused by body heat, the Optical Detection System (ODS) installed in Eyetec employs a CMOS sensor and fuzzy logicto also determine an object’s size, speed and direction of travel. The detector notices if anyone attempts to block or coverthe sensor monitoring the room. Thanks to its anti-blocking function, the detector immediately triggers the alarm if its fieldof vision is blocked in any way.New Traffic Management System can break up traffic jams.A new, flexible traffic-computer sys-tem from <strong>Siemens</strong> is making it easier <strong>for</strong> communities to controltraffic and avoid congestion. The system, Sitraf-fic Scala, is making it possible <strong>for</strong> the first time toimprove traffic management in small towns. Until now, traffic guidance systems were either notdesigned <strong>for</strong> small road networks or were too expensive, but this new traffic computer system ismodular and can be individually configured to fit any road network. It monitors all traffic signals ina given road network and can provide traffic guidance at any time. It detects traffic jams withintelligent sensors and can help to break them up by activating traffic lights in a targeted manner.The key to this new advance is a detection device called the Traffic Eye Universal, a solar-powered device that is suspendedover a road-way and automatically detects the traffic situation via infrared sensors. Using a GPRS data transfer system, itimmediately sends traffic reports to the central computer, which means the control system is able to react faster. If theTraffic Eye detects that traffic is becoming congested, the central computer immediately adjusts the relevant traffic lights’switching times to the traffic situation and temporarily gives the green light to backed-up traffic.1718

According to US Govt. datapublished in 2005 smoking cost the nationabout $92 billion in the <strong>for</strong>m of lostproductivity in 1997-2001, up about $10billion from the annual productivity losses<strong>for</strong> the years 1995-1999. The new lostproductivity estimate when combined withsmoking-related health-care costs, whichwas reported at $75.5 billion in 1998,exceeds $167 billion per year in the UnitedStates.The report also finds that during 1997-Overall, smokers live12 years less thannonsmokers and die anearly death as a result oftheir habit. As comparedto those who have neversmoked (or have quitdecades ago)2001 an estimated 438,000 prematuredeaths occurred each year as a result ofsmoking and exposure to secondhandsmoke.The constituents of tobacco smokeTobacco smoke is a complex mixture ofover 4 thousand chemical compounds –some in tiny quantities – that are theproduct of burning the ingredients of thetobacco and paper, many of which arepharmacologically active, toxic, mutagenicand cancer producing. This is particularly bad news <strong>for</strong>infants and children of smokers who areexposed to such grievous risks early on intheir lives when their body defenses arenot fully developed.Risks of Low-Tar CigarettesLow-tar cigarettes confer little to noadvantages over regular cigarettes. Benefits apply topersons with and without smoking-relateddisease. Former smokers live longer thancontinuing smokers, and the benefits ofquitting extend to those who quit at olderages. Smokingcessation decreases the risk of lung cancer,other cancers, heart attack, stroke, andchronic lung disease.
