THE INTERNATIONAL NUT AND DRIED FRUIT COUNCIL (I.N.C.)The I.N.C. mission <strong>and</strong> objectivesLetter of the ChairmanThe <strong>International</strong> <strong>Nut</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Dried</strong> <strong>Fruit</strong><strong>Council</strong> (I.N.C.) is a non-profit organizationformed in 1983 in Paris, whosemission is to be the internationalsource for information on nuts <strong>and</strong>dried fruits for health, nutrition, foodsafety, Government St<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong>Government Regulations regardingtrade barriers <strong>and</strong> trade quality st<strong>and</strong>ards.The I.N.C. represents almonds,Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts,macadamias, pecans, pinenuts, pistachios,walnuts, apricots, dates, figs,prunes, raisins <strong>and</strong> peanuts.I.N.C.'s objectives include:Increasing underst<strong>and</strong>ing about production, processing,marketing, distribution <strong>and</strong> consumptiontrends in the nut <strong>and</strong> dried fruit industry.Increasing market access by monitoring customsduties <strong>and</strong> trade barriers <strong>and</strong> advise interveninggovernments on behalf of INC membership.Assuring global quality st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> tradingterms are within the framework of existing national<strong>and</strong> international bodies <strong>and</strong> do not inhibit tradewithin the industry.Promoting research, (especially nutrition <strong>and</strong>education) <strong>and</strong> new product development.Promoting international cooperation by interactingwith various public, private, national <strong>and</strong> internationalorganizations, which share our commongoals.Increasing goodwill <strong>and</strong> mutual underst<strong>and</strong>ing ofthe nut <strong>and</strong> dried fruit industry by promoting internationalmeetings in producing <strong>and</strong> consumingcountries.Cuneyd Zapsu, founder of BALSU, served onINC's Executive Committee since 1997 before hiselection as President of INC at the Cape TownConvention in 2002 <strong>and</strong> later become the firstINC Chairman in Istanbul Congress in 2003.He was long-time President of the IstanbulExporters Union <strong>and</strong> co-founded <strong>and</strong> co-chairedboth, the Turkish Hazelnut Promotion Group<strong>and</strong> the World Hazelnut <strong>Council</strong>.Among his various memberships are the TurkishIndustrialist <strong>and</strong> Businessmen Association <strong>and</strong> theWorld Economic Forum (Davos). He is ExecutiveMember of the Turkish-American Business<strong>Council</strong> <strong>and</strong> TESEV theTurkish Economic <strong>and</strong> SocialStudies Foundation.He resigned his position as CEOof Azizler Holding after theTurkish political Justice <strong>and</strong>Development Party, of which he isFounder <strong>and</strong> Board Member, wona l<strong>and</strong>slide victory at the Turkishparliamentarian elections inNovember 2002 <strong>and</strong> built the newgovernment. Since then, he is theSpecial Assistant <strong>and</strong> Information Coordinator tothe Turkish Prime Minister R. Tayyip Erdogan.first Exponut Trade show in Istanbul last June,exhibited at the IFT annual show in Orl<strong>and</strong>o <strong>and</strong>sponsored the Symposium "Tree nuts: nutraceuticals,phytochemicals <strong>and</strong> health aspects", we exhibitedat the PTNPA convention <strong>and</strong> trade show inMiami, <strong>and</strong> attended the annual meeting of theEuropean <strong>Dried</strong> <strong>Fruit</strong> last November in Hamburg.Through our Scientific Committee we have activelyparticipated at the Codex Committee meetings,at the EFSA conference on Health <strong>and</strong> <strong>Nut</strong>ritionClaims.With the intention to be the "international library"for the nut <strong>and</strong> dried fruit industry, according toour new mission, we have focused our efforts onbuilding a database within a new web site of worldinformation from all sources.We have also produced a newDVD which is a record of pastcongresses <strong>and</strong> conventions, wehave now Merch<strong>and</strong>ising with theINC logo <strong>and</strong> we distributed golden,silver <strong>and</strong> bronze pins to ourmembers.We continue to reprint thebrochure "<strong>Nut</strong>rition in EveryH<strong>and</strong>ful" <strong>and</strong> updating the "Go<strong>Nut</strong>s Go Healthy" brochure in differentlanguages. Our monthly"Newsletter" is now also includingnew on dried fruits <strong>and</strong> peanuts <strong>and</strong> completingour quarterly printed "The Cracker" magazine.The Reus Chamber of Commerce in Spain hosts I.N.C. headquarters. The Permanent Secretariatis managed by Ms. Goretti Guasch, member of the Executive Committee <strong>and</strong> responsible toachieve the written objectives of INC by working closely with the members of the Board ofDirectors <strong>and</strong> assisting the Chairman in his duties.Thank you Baljit, Steven <strong>and</strong> the MontrealOrganizing Committee for organizing anothergreat <strong>and</strong> very successful convention with over 500participants from 34 countries in Montreal.There have been many ongoing activities that supportthe new INC objectives. Just to name a few ofthose: We exhibited <strong>and</strong> delivered a speech at theAll of these activities <strong>and</strong> more to come will bevital to keep nuts <strong>and</strong> dried fruits in the news forthe years ahead when our crops will be larger thanpresently. INC invited to exhibit <strong>and</strong> to speak atthe EXPONUT, IstanbulINC Exhibits at the IFT Food Showin Orl<strong>and</strong>o, U.S.A.The INC was invited to exhibit at the three dayEXPONUT, <strong>International</strong> Trade Fair forHazelnuts <strong>and</strong> products, nuts, dried fruits <strong>and</strong>Technologies in Istanbul, Turkey, that took placeon June 22-24, <strong>2006</strong>. This was the second edition ofthe trade show <strong>and</strong> attracted exhibitors <strong>and</strong> visitorsfrom all over Turkey <strong>and</strong> other countries.The INC had a 5m x 12m corner boothopened from two sides mainly emphasizingthe new web site <strong>and</strong> the data base. Threebig brochure showcase allowed us to distributethe different informative brochures<strong>and</strong> catalogues. The booth also includedthe "internet corner" which allowed the visitorsto browse into the new INC web site<strong>and</strong> to explore the Data base, how it works<strong>and</strong> its contents.In addition to the exhibit, the INC Chairman,Cuneyd Zapsu, gave a speech at the opening ceremonyin which the INC was presented as the only<strong>and</strong> unique international source for information onnuts <strong>and</strong> dried fruits.The Exponut this year also included a technicalSeminar on nuts <strong>and</strong> dried fruits which was celebratedwithin the frame of the exhibition. Differentrepresentatives from the industry in Turkey, like theUndersecretariat of the Prime Ministry for ForeignTrade, the Istanbul Exporters' Union of Hazelnuts<strong>and</strong> <strong>Dried</strong> <strong>Fruit</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> the Aegean ExportersAssociation, the EGE University, Faculty ofAgriculture among others, gave a review of the nut<strong>and</strong> dried fruit situation <strong>and</strong> outlook. The INC alsoparticipated in the Seminar with an speech deliveredby the Executive Director, Goretti Guasch,who presented the INC <strong>and</strong> introduced the newweb site <strong>and</strong> the Database, <strong>and</strong> the Chairman ofthe INC Scientific & Government AffairsCommittee, Pino Calcagni, who reviewed thehealth benefits of nuts <strong>and</strong> dried fruits <strong>and</strong> thefutur of the sector.The I.N.C. exhibited at the three day IFT FoodShow in Orl<strong>and</strong>o, U.S.A., which took place in June25-27, <strong>2006</strong>. <strong>International</strong> Workshop “Prevention<strong>and</strong> Control of Brazil <strong>Nut</strong>Contamination by Aflatoxins”The INC Scientific <strong>and</strong> Government AffairsCommittee contributed in the <strong>International</strong>Workshop "Prevention <strong>and</strong> Control of Brazil <strong>Nut</strong>Contamination by Aflatoxins", held in Rio Branco,Brazil, on July <strong>2006</strong>, within the framework of theSt<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> Trade Development Facility project,Safe<strong>Nut</strong>, which has now released the main results<strong>and</strong> conclusions.The purpose of the STDF project Safe<strong>Nut</strong> is tovalidate <strong>and</strong> transfer to the different key stakeholdersof the Brazil nut production chain a sustainable<strong>and</strong> effective aflatoxin management system forrecovering <strong>and</strong> consolidating export markets, particularlyin Europe. The project is a joint initiativeof the Food <strong>and</strong> Agriculture Organization (FAO),the World Organization for Animal health (OIE),the World Bank, the World Health Organization(WHO) <strong>and</strong> the World Trade Organizations(WTO). The objective of the workshop was to discussthe current situation of the Brazil nut sector inthe three main producing countries (Brazil, Bolivia<strong>and</strong> Peru) before initiating the Safe<strong>Nut</strong> project. PROJECTS FOR 2007Projects for 2007AcknowledgementsThe INC, through its CongressCommittee, will organise the XXVI World<strong>Nut</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Dried</strong> <strong>Fruit</strong> Congress in Madrid,Spain, in May 10-12, 2007 to be hosted byJordi Martí, member of the INC Board ofDirectors.UN PROGRAM: the INC will improvethe current Database with a new softwaresystem to display statistical results withgraphs <strong>and</strong> charts in a more professional<strong>and</strong> accurate way, <strong>and</strong> to improve searchcapabilities in scientific regulations <strong>and</strong> scientificstudies.The INC Scientific & GovernmentAffairs Committee will represent the INCin different meetings: the EFSA meeting inParma Italy <strong>and</strong> Brussels for labelling <strong>and</strong>nutrition claims, in Food Miles for reductionof CO2 in our sector, will actively participateto the MRL determination by EU<strong>and</strong> global harmonization, active lobbyingin the dispute USA/EU for compulsoryaflatoxin tests in Europe or voluntary testsin USA, inter-sectorial activity with FRU-COM, participation in Codex Committeemeetings for Aflatoxin levels discussions.The INC will publish new informativebrochures <strong>and</strong> will translate the existingones into different languages for distributionto all INC members.The INC will actively participate in internationalspecialized food exhibitions, seminars<strong>and</strong> conferences in order to promotethe INC activities <strong>and</strong> database, <strong>and</strong> toincrease underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> goodwill of thenut <strong>and</strong> dried fruit industry.The INC will sponsor the 2007 <strong>Nut</strong>s &Health Symposium at UC Davis-California,organized by the INC-NREF <strong>and</strong> theUSDA WHNRC.The Cracker magazine will start publishingstatistics on dried fruits <strong>and</strong> peanuts, inaddition of the statistics on tree nuts publisheduntil now.The <strong>International</strong> <strong>Nut</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Dried</strong> <strong>Fruit</strong><strong>Council</strong> or INC thanks to the INCmembers for their contributions <strong>and</strong>support which allows the INCFoundation to develop activities onnutrition research, scientific <strong>and</strong> technicalissues, promotion, underst<strong>and</strong>ing<strong>and</strong> goodwill of the nut <strong>and</strong> dried fruitindustry worldwide.
