<strong>Certification</strong> ProgramsIntroductionEach year the <strong>University</strong> updates this list <strong>of</strong> successful graduates fromits <strong>Certification</strong> programs.The purpose <strong>of</strong> this list is to:♦ Identify those therapists who passed a clinical certification andhave remained current in continuing pr<strong>of</strong>essional education♦ Assist with referrals within the physical therapy and medicalpr<strong>of</strong>essions♦ Assist with the <strong>for</strong>mation <strong>of</strong> study groups and networks♦ Recognize those who have reached standards <strong>of</strong> competencythrough our programsWe have long held that continuing education should be structuredtoward a meaningful goal. Thus, in 1981, when a group <strong>of</strong> therapistswho had completed the <strong>University</strong>’s (then the Institute <strong>of</strong> PhysicalTherapy’s) manual therapy seminars asked to be examined, thefaculty agreed and <strong>Certification</strong> began.<strong>Certification</strong> is designed to <strong>of</strong>fer a series <strong>of</strong> seminars, whichculminate in a comprehensive examination consisting <strong>of</strong> written, oraland practical testing to define competency in a chosen field.<strong>Certification</strong> is an integral part <strong>of</strong> the process <strong>for</strong> acquiring either thePost-Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Master <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Science (MHSc) or thetransitional Doctor <strong>of</strong> Physical Therapy (DPT).<strong>Certification</strong> requires completion <strong>of</strong> the required seminars either as astructured continuing education process or as part <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> our postpr<strong>of</strong>essionaldegree programs. Taking the home study courses <strong>for</strong>graduate credit is not required <strong>for</strong> <strong>Certification</strong>, although taking them<strong>for</strong> credit toward a post-pr<strong>of</strong>essional degree is recommended <strong>for</strong>maximum educational benefit.Mission <strong>St</strong>atement <strong>for</strong> <strong>Certification</strong> ProcessThe mission <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> (USA) <strong>Certification</strong>Process is to develop a post-pr<strong>of</strong>essional expertise level <strong>of</strong> knowledgeiii
and skills based on a particular clinical specialty area. By attending aseries <strong>of</strong> seminars and completion <strong>of</strong> a written, oral, and practicalexamination, the student will have demonstrated a safe level <strong>of</strong>competency in the specialty area according to the standardsestablished by USA.<strong>Certification</strong> Review and Exam<strong>Certification</strong> is a six-day process consisting <strong>of</strong> a 5-day Review Coursethat provides opportunity <strong>for</strong> reviewing and updating the contents <strong>of</strong>each <strong>of</strong> the seminars leading to <strong>Certification</strong>. On the fifth day, awritten exam is given, followed by a series <strong>of</strong> oral and practicalexaminations. The standard sought is the safe application <strong>of</strong>advanced clinical skills in the areas tested.RegistrationA therapist may apply to take the Review/<strong>Certification</strong> Course,provided he/she has taken all the prerequisite seminars required <strong>for</strong>the desired <strong>Certification</strong> prior to the <strong>Certification</strong> exams.Results are confidential. Only the names <strong>of</strong> those who pass are listedas having taken part. Not even those present would know if acandidate completed all <strong>of</strong> the test components. Some come <strong>for</strong> theweek purely <strong>for</strong> the value <strong>of</strong> review. Some have taken the reviewtwice or more be<strong>for</strong>e taking the exams. For those who fail tocomplete all <strong>of</strong> the components <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Certification</strong> process, the<strong>University</strong> makes arrangements <strong>for</strong> them to be retested at variouslocations throughout the country, convenient to the candidate andinstructor.Note: Early application is recommended. The <strong>Certification</strong> refundpolicy is designed to discourage last minute withdrawal.ProcessTo earn each <strong>Certification</strong>, a therapist must attend seminars totaling atleast 25 days, culminating in a weeklong review and examinationprocess.iv

The school recognized theproliferation <strong>of</strong> letters after the names <strong>of</strong> physical therapists and introducedthis step with some hesitancy. Subsequent introduction <strong>of</strong> the letters STC,PCC and CFC have been approved to indicate certification in SportsPhysical Therapy, Primary Care and Cranio-Facial respectfully.In order to maintain use <strong>of</strong> the certification letters, the <strong>University</strong> requiresevidence <strong>of</strong> continuing pr<strong>of</strong>essional development. Over a 24-month period,the therapist is expected to maintain either full or part-time clinical practiceand meet one or more <strong>of</strong> the following activities:♦ 30 hours (3.0 CEU) <strong>of</strong> continuing education attendance every 2years♦ publication <strong>of</strong> article in peer-reviewed journal♦ completion and passing <strong>of</strong> ABPTS certification examination♦ post-pr<strong>of</strong>essional degree coursework (3 credits over 24 months)♦ presentation (plat<strong>for</strong>m or poster) <strong>of</strong> research project♦ development and/or teaching <strong>of</strong> a seminar♦ development and/or teaching <strong>of</strong> a rehabilitation-related course ina degree-granting programKeeping the <strong>List</strong> CurrentEvery two years we mail requests <strong>for</strong> address correction and evidence <strong>of</strong>continuing pr<strong>of</strong>essional education courses taken during the past twenty-fourmonth period. If the requested <strong>for</strong>m is returned, the complying therapist willbe listed with his or her current address on the following pages. If evidence<strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional development experiences during the past twenty-four monthsis reported, the appropriate initials will be added after the complyingtherapist’s name.
