The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center is dedicated to the enrichment of Jewish life; fostering the
spiritual, emotional, and physical development of its individual members through all of life’s stages and
circumstances; and strengthening the connection with the People and Culture of Israel, along with other Jewish
communities throughout the world.
The MAR-JCC represents a model of acceptance, understanding, and diversity. As such, people look at the
MAR-JCC as a Center of excellence that epitomizes how shared Jewish values support a vibrant and evolving
constituency. The MAR-JCC is open to the entire community, regardless of race, religion, or national origin and
is a beneficiary agency of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and the United Way of Miami-Dade County,
and a member of the Jewish Community Center Association of North America.
August, 2012
Dear Friends,
This Program Guide represents the start of a new program year coupled with the excitement of finalizing
plans for the expansion of our MAR-JCC to meet the needs of our membership and community.
Over the course of the past year, we again experienced an unprecedented growth in enrollment in our
classes and programs - a testament to the vibrancy of our JCC and the hard work of a dedicated staff and
program committees. This success has created a whole set of challenges - highlighted by a physical plant
that is being taxed beyond its limits. Our Board of Directors is working diligently to address these concerns
and our community’s growing needs. Architectural plans have been drawn to reconfigure our parking lot
and campus traffic flow, which will result in an additional 100 parking spaces on our Sanford L. Ziff Campus.
At the same time, new plans are being designed for our Arts and Education Complex, which will be
constructed on the grassy lot adjacent to our Main Building and will include a theater, interest rooms, and a
gymnastics studio. Through our Capital Campaign, we plan to meet our financial goals over the course of
the next 12 months, so that this next phase of campus expansion will soon come to fruition. Going hand-inhand
with our Capital Campaign is strategic planning by our Board of Directors, so that we may create a
blueprint for our JCC, for what it needs today to better serve its membership and community…and what its
needs will be for tomorrow to serve our next generation. Certainly, if you are interested in lending support
to these efforts, we invite you to contact either one of us.
As you go through this Program Guide, we hope that you share our pride in the extensive and diverse
programming that we offer. In that vein, we want to extend a warm welcome to the newest additions to
our MAR-JCC family who this year will be broadening our menu of activity - SWIM GYM, which will build upon
the outstanding year-round aquatics program that we currently offer, and YAD, the Young Adult Division of
our Hebraica Department, which is a joint venture of the MAR-JCC and Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish
Campus Life, to serve Jewish collegiates of South Florida.
We look forward to your involvement in the coming year, not only as participants, but also involving yourself
with us in a volunteer capacity. Our MAR-JCC derives its strength from an outstanding staff of professionals
who are supported by an outstanding and dedicated corps of volunteers. This partnership, through our
committee process, creates a winning team of those vested in the success of our JCC and those who seek
to make the MAR-JCC a Center of Excellence.
We look forward to seeing you here at the MAR-JCC in the days, weeks, and months ahead. And, as we
enter a new year of program and activity…coupled with the approach of the High Holidays, we want to
extend to you and your family a year filled with good health, peace, prosperity, and happiness.
Shana Tova Tikatevu – may this year be a sweet one for all of us.
Sincerely,
Ariel Bentata Gary J. Bomzer, MSW
WHY GIVE
The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center derives its operating revenue from membership dues,
registration fees, funding from the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and the United Way of Miami-Dade, and from
state grants and various other sources. Although those funds are sufficient for sustaining the basic functions of the
MAR-JCC, additional funds are required to provide for improvements, enhancements, and progress. That is where
you come in!
The MAR-JCC depends upon the generosity of our members, friends, businesses, as well as private and family
foundations, to provide the additional supplemental funds necessary to ensure we can operate at an optimum
level and are able grow and change in response to the needs of our members and our community.
HOW TO GIVE
We understand that as a donor you are unique as are your interests and your passions. At the MAR-JCC, our goal
is to get to know you and to understand your needs. In this way, we can customize your donor experience and
assist you in reaching your personal philanthropic goals. The various ways to support our efforts are listed below.
To explore one of these opportunities, please contact Elizabeth Mitrani.
UNRESTRICTED GIFTS
Unrestricted donations to the MAR-JCC are all-purpose gifts that allow us to apply your funds wherever they will
have the most impact. When you give an unrestricted gift, you give us the flexibility to take on new opportunities,
strengthen ongoing programs, or meet unexpected financial needs.
PLANNED GIFTS
Whether you want to provide support immediately or design a plan that benefits MAR-JCC in the future, there are
many options to choose from, that can be integrated into your financial or estate plan. Planned giving vehicles
such as gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts can be structured to provide income to you and/or your heirs
today, while at the same time benefitting the MAR-JCC. However, if a gift in your will is your preference, our staff
will work closely with you and/or your representative to ensure all your wishes are met.
CASH GIFTS
Cash gifts can be made by credit card, on the phone or in person, or by check made payable to the Michael-
Ann Russell Jewish Community Center. Checks may be delivered in person or mailed to Gary Bomzer, President
and CEO, MAR-JCC, 18900 NE 25th Avenue, North Miami Beach, Florida 33180.
GIFTS OF APPRECIATED SECURITIES
Marketable appreciated securities, held for more than one year, can be delivered in person or sent through an
electronic transfer authorization. Be sure to notify us of your decision in advance. Securities will be sold immediately
and the funds allocated based upon your giving preference and instructions.
GIFTS-IN-KIND
Gifts-in-kind are an important way of giving to the MAR-JCC. This option includes donations of property (other
than cash and marketable securities) such as real estate, works of art, equipment, furnishings, software, and
licensing. A gift-in kind requires an official transfer of ownership and requires the donor to determine the fair
market value of the gift for tax reporting purposes.
Knowing that a theatre program cannot be sustained by ticket sales alone, the Habimah Society provides an
invaluable source of support to the J Cultural Arts Theatre’s year-round program through fundraising projects and
financial contributions. Gifts of $1,000 or more receive choice seating for all J-CAT productions and all gifts are
recognized in each production’s “playbill.” Visit us at www.jcctheatre.com to learn how you can become part of the
Habimah Society.
NETZACH TRIBUTE FUNDS
Tribute Funds are a wonderful way to commemorate an event, or honor the life or the memory of a loved one. When
establishing a Tribute Fund, you are able to determine both the name of the fund as well as its ultimate purpose and
will forever provide support to the areas of the MAR-JCC that are most important to you. A minimum contribution of
$25,000 is required to endow a fund. As an alternative, you can donate to one of the established Tribute Funds listed
below. Tribute Funds are held in an endowment with the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. An endowed fund is
invested in perpetuity and only the annual interest earnings are utilized. The funds are combined with those of other
donors for investment purposes and the investments are overseen by the GMJF Investment committee and are
managed by a professional investment firm.
About our program:
•Infant/Toddler Center (ITC) (Ages 2 months - 2 years)
Bamachol Dance Academy offers Israeli Dance, Ballet, Jazz, Latin Dance, Hip-Hop and skills development, friendship, mutual
respect, and Jewish culture, under the supervision of highly qualified and talented staff. The Academy is performance oriented -
allowing each child to “learn dance, while dancing.” Being part of a choreography gives each child notions of space orientation,
the sense of belonging, and the responsibility of having a place “in the dance.”
ANOUK MARKOVITS - I AM FORBIDDEN
A family is torn apart by fierce belief and private longing in this journey deep inside the most insular
Hasidic sect, the Satmar. Sweeping from the Central European countryside just before World War II
to Paris to contemporary Williamsburg, Brooklyn, this novel brings to life four generations of one
Satmar family. It is an emotionally gripping story of what happens when unwavering love, unyielding
law, and centuries of tradition collide.
Anouk Markovits was raised in France in a Satmar home, breaking from the fold when she 19 years
old to avoid an arranged marriage. Markovits went on to receive a bachelor of science from
Columbia University, a master of architecture from Harvard, and a Ph.D. in Romance studies from
Cornell. Her first novel, PUR Coton, was written in French; I AM FORBIDDEN is Markovits' English - language debut.
Wednesday, January 23, 7 pm, at Temple Sinai
LESLIE MAITLAND - CROSSING THE BORDERS OF TIME
On a pier in Marseille, in 1942, an 18 year old German Jewish girl - pried from the arms of the
Frenchman she yearned to marry - boarded one of the last ships to escape the country. Five years
later, living in America, 23 year old Janine married a dynamic American man but never forgot the
words of the young Frenchman who had captured her heart, "I give you my vow that whatever
the time we must wait, you will be my wife. Never forget, never doubt." But it was her daughter,
former New York Times investigative reporter, Leslie Maitland, who eventually determined to find
him, and the story culminates in the daring fulfillment of a vow of love made 50 years earlier.
MAURICE D. HARRIS - MOSES: A Stranger Among Us
With Passover approaching, Rabbi Maurice Harris, brings the holiday's main character to life as he
looks beyond familiar popular portrayals of Moses by interweaving traditional religious
interpretations, academic Bible scholarship, psychological and sociological analysis, feminist
readings, and more. Combining a deep respect for the Biblical text with a willingness to question
received tradition, Harris reveals a complex Moses whose life story gives us important tools for better
understanding issues like religious fundamentalism, intermarriage, identity confusion, and civil
disobedience, among others.
Open to the community at no charge. Made possible by the MAR-JCC’s Steven J. Kravitz Adult Jewish Education
Fund and by Participating Organizations each sponsoring a different author event.
