Richard Garfield, DrPH
Richard Garfield, DrPH, Henrik H.
Bendixen Professor of Clinical
International Nursing, has been
appointed advisor to the Centers
for disease Control and Prevention
(CdC) to assist in its reorganization
of international programs and
the development of the Center for
global health. The CdC, in addition
to domestic activities, has staff on
the ground in more than 60 countries
around the world. As a lead agency
of the us government, the CdC
already has a major role in efforts to
reduce malaria, hiv, and to provide
immunizations for preventable diseases.
dr. garfield has led efforts to
organize public health activities in
underdeveloped countries and is now
analyzing the impact of non-communicable
diseases for the World health
organization. he is also coordinating
research to estimate direct and
indirect deaths due to conflict for the
fourth round of the global burden
of disease project. his work with the
CdC includes the design of what will
be a major new set of us government
global health initiatives as well
as efforts to extend existing programs
aimed at strengthening health services
infrastructure, planning capacity
and global health.

The school hosted the Fourteenth
Invitational Conference on Assuring
Quality and Access in Advanced
Practice Nursing in Cape Town,
south Africa. deans from schools of
nursing, nursing organization officials
and health policy experts attended.
discussions centered on the national
certification exam for dnP graduates
and the continued need for standardization
of degree competencies.
Faculty members
Janice Smolowitz, DNP, EdD,
and Karen Desjardins, DNP, were
elected to the national Academies
of Practice, nursing. The national
Academies of Practice (nAP) is
a nonprofit professional organization
composed of elected and
distinguished representatives
from ten different health professions.
The central purpose of nAP
is to advise public policy makers
on health care issues, using nAP’s
unique perspective — that of expert
practitioners and scholars joined
in interdisciplinary dialogue. it is
the only interdisciplinary group
of health care practitioners dedicated
to these issues. dr. smolowitz
and dr. desjardins were inducted in
march 2010.

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, Assistant
Professor of Nursing, and DNP
student Tracy Andrews were
selected to attend the national
human genome research institute’s
summer Workshop in genomics at
the national institute of health in
summer 2010. This was a competitive
application for both faculty and
students.
Elaine Larson, PhD, has been
appointed to serve a three-year
term on the national Advisory
Council for nursing research, nih,
February 1, 2010 – January 30, 2014.
The Council advises on matters relating
to the conduct and support of
nursing research, training, health
information dissemination, and other
programs.

The American Association of Colleges
of nursing (AACn) began its inaugural
nursing student Policy summit in
Washington, dC for the next generation
of health policy leaders.
