St. Mary Magdalene,
The Apostle to the Apostles
Bishop Jaime Soto, the Chairman of the Subcommittee for the Catholic Campaign for
Human Development (CCHD) of the USCCB, writes: “Right now, in the United States, 44 million people are classified by the
federal government as living in poverty. That’s one out of every seven Americans, and one out of every five children. It’s a
huge number of people. Sometimes people make bad choices. But a lot of other factors can send a family below the poverty
line—and keep others there who are already poor: a minimum wage that earns a full-time worker less than $16,000 a
year; health insurance that is unaffordable to many, including the 51 million people who lacked coverage in 2009; a housing
market that has become inaccessible to low-income people; 12 million pay more than half their annual income for rent or
mortgage payments. Education systems, family environments, and racism, among other factors, also play roles.”
My Dear Friends,
THE HE PASTOR ASTOR ASTOR’S ASTOR PARAGRAPH
ARAGRAPH
Today is a 2nd collection for our church’s Campaign for Human Development. This
is an annual collection designed to promote programs which create opportunities for
people who are in need to help themselves. I have put some words of the US Bishop
who coordinates this effort in the ‘Reflection’ on the front page of this week’s bulletin.
The 2nd collection last week for the victims of Hurricane Sandy came to $3,902. Thank you for this generosity and
we will send the funds to be distributed through Catholic Charities. If you wish to contribute, just mark your gift
and place it in any of the collections today.
On the back page of the bulletin is a letter from Bishop Burbidge expressing thanks for our contribution to the Diocesan
Cathedral Campaign. We have now reached the goal for the Cathedral and the 2012 Bishop’s Annual Appeal.
All the funds we receive from here on go to our own new church fund—Our Church~Our Time Campaign. You can
see the latest updates in another part of the bulletin. For those who were not here last week—we will distribute
pledge forms again today. We still have one important goal to reach—100% parish family participation.
“It’s important for our own integrity and the integrity of our
country that we stand up today against these and other attacks
on our religious freedom. History affords many examples,
both before and since America’s founding, where restraints on
religious liberty presaged the denial of other human rights. By
standing up for religious liberty now, we can begin to renew
the soul of America and strengthen our nation’s commitment
to all the rights and freedoms we enjoy as children of God. In
so doing, we may also discover in our own lives what it means
to be fully human.” ~ Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput,
Catholic Charities Sunday Letter from Bishop Michael F. Burbidge
Our Diocese celebrates Catholic Charities Sunday each year to express appreciation for the works of charity and mercy
provided through the generosity and outreach of the faithful throughout our parishes and communities. It is an opportunity to
give thanks to all who have contributed time, talent and resources in response to the mandate of Jesus to love and serve one another,
especially those in most need.
This is a significant and grace-filled moment in the life of our Church. We have embarked on the Year of Faith, as
promulgated by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. Throughout this Year, we are invited in a special way to reflect our faith
in generous and selfless works of charity. In our Diocese, we are also celebrating the opening of the cause of the Beatification
and Canonization of Father Thomas F. Price, the priest who purchased the land that is still owned by the Church in the Nazareth
section of Raleigh. When a portion of that land was sold by the Diocese in the 1980’s, the Diocese placed a portion of the proceeds
into an Endowment for the Poor, which continues to generate income to provide grants to organizations serving the poor
in our communities. It was on that land that Father Price also founded the Nazareth Orphanage, which was the beginning of
100 years of Catholic social service in eastern North Carolina that continues to this day. In order to give glory to God and to
meet the needs of our growing and vibrant Catholic community, we will construct the Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral on that
same Nazareth property purchased by Father Price.
With the Lord’s grace and as Father Price did a century ago, we will become living stones sent forth to build up the
Body of Christ through charitable works. I respectfully ask for your continued prayers and financial support of our diocesan
Catholic Charities programs so that together we may continue to provide extensive outreach and compassionate care to all those
who need our assistance.
On behalf of the Church and Catholic Charities, thank you for your prayerful support. May Our Lord Jesus bless you
and may Mary Our Mother continue to watch over you always.
