Course philosophyThe rehabilitation course is founded on a beliefthat rehabilitation is a philosophy of care aswell as a process. As a philosophy it callsfor professionals to use strategies that areempowering and enabling with the client at thecentre. As a process it needs to be active anddynamic, responding to the client’s needs.Rehabilitation needs to begin at the onset ofan individual’s health care experience withvarying levels of intensity. It is dependent on acollaborative team approach with interventionswhich should focus on the individual’s changingneeds, experiences and personal priorities atany one time. Each individual’s experience will beinfl uenced by their personal, cultural and spiritualbeliefs as well as by their previous experience ofhealth, illness and personal crisis. The course team recognises the potentialphysical, psychological, spiritual and socialimpact of disability on individuals and their carers. This is in keeping with the School of Health andSocial Care’s strong commitment to fosteringa culture of inclusion and diversity in all of itsactivities. These include employment practices, student recruitment and support, curriculumdevelopment, teaching, assessment andresearch. The aim of rehabilitation is to enable individualsand their carers to adjust and cope effectively. For rehabilitation to be effective it must be basedon on-going assessment, planning and evaluationand involve a partnership between the individual, their social network and the health care team.REHABILITATIONPractice focusStudent supportA key feature of the course is the practicefocused sessions, which are led by clinicians, researchers or others who are expert in their fi eldwith a focus on a specifi c rehabilitation issue orskill.
