Advanced Oxidation Systems 

An Explanation of Advanced Oxidation 

Oxidation is a chemical reaction in which an element or ion is increased in positive valence, losing electrons to 

an oxidizing agent. To oxidize is to change a substance by chemical reaction by combining it with oxygen such 

as fire or rust. Oxidation processes can be used to kill bacteria, mold, and viruses. They are also routinely 

used to react with odor causing chemicals (VOC's = Volatile Organic Compounds), and other inorganic and 

organic chemicals. The oxidizers created during advanced oxidation processes are much more effective than 

traditional oxidants at reacting with these types of compounds

By utilizing redundant oxidizers, the speed and efficiency of the 

oxidation process is greatly increased, in some cases over 40 

times. Oxidants considerably stronger than chlorine include 

Hydroxyl Radicals (OH·), Ozone (O3), Hydro Peroxides, and 

Super Oxide ions. All of these are either used during or are produced 

as a result of Advanced Oxidation Processes. Generally 

Advanced Oxidation Processes will react with compounds that 

typically will not react with other common oxidants. 

An example of one of the oxidizers created by Advanced Oxidation is the Hydroxyl Radical. OH· is very unstable, 

thereby making it very aggressive and a free radical. One method the Hydroxyl or free radical is created 

is when ozone and water react with UV light energy and photolysis occurs. Although the Hydroxyl Radicals are 

very short lived, they have a higher oxidation potential than ozone, chlorine, or hydrogen peroxide, and their 

unstable nature increases their reaction speed. A strong benefit of Advanced Oxidation is the end products of 

CO 2 and H 2 O,Carbon Dioxide and Water.

RGF's PHOTOHYDROIONIZATION (PHI) Technology 

Advanced Oxidation Air Systems 

This exclusive advanced oxidation process utilizes dual wavelength UV elements that are targeted onto a trimetallic 

catalyst surface. This surface is coated with a proprietary TiO2, Ag, Cu, and hydrophilic coating. UV 

energy (254nm) striking the target surface activates production of hydroxyl radicals, super oxide ions, and 

hydro-peroxides on the PHI cell surface. The hydrophilic surface (absorbs moisture from the air), as well as the 

water contained in the air itself is what is split into OH radicals in the advanced oxidation process. Our dual 

wavelength lamp also emits UV energy at 185 nm. The photon energy at this wavelength is sufficient to split 

oxygen molecules to form ozone gas. These ozone molecules are then reduced back to oxygen by the 254 nm 

UV energy that is also emitted from the UV element (another type of advanced oxidation reaction). The results 

from this reaction process also produce OH· radicals, super-oxide ions and hydro-peroxides similar to the surface 

reactions discussed earlier. As you can see, not only is the target surface active, but so is the air space 

between the target and the UV element. RGF's PHI "cell" not only treats the air with germicidal UV light , it also 

has the added effect of continuing to treat the air after it leaves the cell. The PHI process is very effective at 

reducing microbes, as well as odors (something conventional UV system simply cannot do).

The RGF PHI Air Purification Plan 

The RGF Photohydroionization (PHI) Air Purification Plan utilizes an advanced oxidation process that produces Hydroxyl 

Radicals, Superoxide Ions , and Hydroperoxides at a “passive” ozonation level at or below the Federal government recommended 

level of 0.04 ppm for occupied areas. This line of air purifers has been designed not to exceed the legal levels 

for occupied spaces while providing adequate airborne purification with several different models capable of treating various 

sized areas. 

The Photohydroionization (PHI) systems have demonstrated in lab tests greater than 90% reductions of airborne microbials 

while also providing a means of reducing odors. 

The RGF Commercial Ozone Air Treatment Plan 

The RGF Commercial Air Treatment Plan is to utilize a total program of training with particular emphasis on safety. The 

RGF plan is to evacuate the area to be deodorized, treat the area with a sufficient dose to destroy all the odor causing molecules 

(usually 1 ppm) of residual ozone, and ventilate the area before reoccupying. RGF offers a complete air treatment 

plan which includes a training course, testing, and certification. These non-occupied space units are for high level oxidation 

which produce residual ozone levels that far exceed occupied space levels. These systems are designed for short term 

high level treatment of problem areas. 

Ozone produced by Corona Discharge (CD) has a higher concentration by weight than ozone produced by Ultraviolet Light 

(UV). However, air treatment usually requires large volumes of low ozone concentration (1-2 ppm) to effectively treat air. 

CD produced ozone requires extra energy and effort to compress, dry, produce, and then dilute the produced ozone. In 

comparison, UV produced ozone needs no air pretreatment and is produced at the ideal concentrations to be used to 

destroy airborne odors and VOC’s. Accordingly, UV ozone generators are preferred for ozone air treatment.

Air Treatment Sizing Formula 

Use the following formula for calculating air treatment times necessary to treat a room. 

Square Feet x Height of Room = Cubic Feet 

Cubic Feet / CFM of RGF System = Minutes needed to turn air 

over in a room one time. 

Minutes / 60 = Hours needed to turn air over in a room one time. 

Example for Turbozone ® Models 1000 & 7000: 

10’ L x 12’ W x 8’ H room = 960 cubic feet 

960 cu. ft. / 45 CFM = 21 minutes to turn room over once 

The amount of time necessary to sterilize an area with ozone depends upon the temperature, humidity level and the 

amount of reactive substances (odors). For effective treatment, it is recommended to turn rooms over at least 3 times.

energy from the ultraviolet (UV) cell reacts with oxygen,

cleansing ions, such as hydroperoxides and super 

oxide ions, which are exhausted from the system into

The HVAC PHI Cell by RGF ® is a new generation of HVAC Eco Air Systems designed 

to eliminate sick building syndrome risks by reducing odors, air pollutants, VOCs (chemical

mounted into air conditioning and heating system air ducts where many sick building

Rapid Recovery Unit 

In addition to the PHI Effect the Rapid Recovery Units also utilize Odor 

Absorbing Media Filter. Filtration is not the core method utilized to reduce or

The Plug In Plus Natural Air Purification System provides bacteria, mold, odor and VOCs (chemical 

odors) reduction. The advantage of the Plug In Plus is its ability to be used in any room and be 

completely inconspicuous. The Plug In Plus plugs directly into a wall outlet and can be used with or 

without its internal fan. Because it has its own outlets as part of the unit, you do not lose the wall outlet 

you will actually gain 2 new outlets. The Plug In Plus is an air treatment system not a filter.
