2009 Season OutlookThe Lions had a solid all-around season in 2008, posting a 29-11overall mark, winning both the HCAC regular season and tournamentchampionships, advancing to the NCAA post-season and finishing 25thin the Bison/AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll. Most coacheswould be happy with a repeat performance this season but Mount firstyearHead Coach Jon Bennett said the team has the ability to betterthose results.“There is no reason that this team can’t be a national power everyseason,’’ Bennett states. “The players want to win the conference titleevery year but we also want to get back to the regional final, win thatand advance to the Elite Eight.”Bennett, who was an assistant at the Mount from 2001-2004, wasrecently a head coach at Miami University-Middletown. Bennett helpedlead the Mount to national prominence in his first stint at the College,as the Lions finished sixth, eighth, 12th and eighth in the nationalpolls during his time. The Mount, which has finished ranked as high assixth (2000) in the final national poll, lost in the NCAA quarterfinalsin 2000 and 2001, and dropped Great Lakes Regional Finals matches in2002 and 2004. They fell in the 2003 regional semifinals.“I am looking to return the team to being considered among thetop teams in the Midwest and a top-10 national team,’’ Bennett adds.“I think this year’s team has the ability to do this. They played well in the spring, showed a lot of skills and they getalong really well on the court and off. We’re all excited about theupcoming season.”Fueling Bennett’s enthusiasm about the 2009 season is the factthat the Lions return nine players from last season’s team and apromising group of incoming players. Bennett said this year’s teamwill focus on being well-rounded in all facets of the game, which startsoff controlling the first touch of the ball on each play. Valuing eachpossession as being important, is also key, said Bennett, and he’ll alsohave the team put a lot of work into its defense, which he claims winschampionships.Bennett said he thinks the conference will be a good test again forthe Lions this fall as he feels that many teams have gotten stronger. He also thinks that Mount will face a challenging non-conferenceschedule this fall, too, with the likes of Ohio Northern University,Wittenberg, Thomas More, Elmhurst, and others on the slate.Outside HittersThe Lions are extremely strong with their outside group of hitters, asjunior Jamie Grauvogel and senior Anna Richter each return this fall tolead that group. Grauvogel, who is in her second season at the Mount, was a 2008 First Team All-HCAC selection, First Team All-Regionhonoree and Third-Team All-American. She led the Mount in 2008 with490 kills and 62 service aces while also chipping in 435 digs and 71blocks. Richter won First Team All-HCAC recognition after posting 337kills and 403 digs last fall.“Both Grauvogel and Richter give us great leadership and work ethicas well as exceptional skills to play all-around for us,’’ Bennett says.Senior Casey Waldman returns for her third season and looks to pushfor playing time at the outside position. She gives the team goodathletic ability, after playing for the Lions’ softball team, too, the pastthree seasons. Freshman Taylor Figgins shows promise for the Mount,as well, and might also see some time for the team in the middle andthe right-side.Middle HittersBennett said the team will be looking for some new players to steptheir production in the middle of the front row for the Mount. He addsthat Grauvogel might also see some time at that spot as well for theLions in 2009.Sophomore Kat Roedig played 51 games last season for the Mountand looks to hold down a starting spot this fall. She will be joined inthe middle by freshman Michelle Webb.Right-Side HittersThe Lions appear to be well-stocked on the outside right of theiralignment with junior returners Jennifer Fawns and Jess Gadberry.Fawns played in 15 games last season while Gadberry, in her first year, registered 206 kills and 40 blocks.Sarah Scheid, a sophomore, and Erica Williams, a freshman, join theteam this season and add depth to a strong position.“We have a lot of versatility from the group that will hold down themiddle and outside positions for us this season,’’ Bennett says. “Theyall bring strong skills to court for us and give us great depth.”SetterJunior Lyndsey Waldman is expected to hold down the starting setterposition for the team this fall. Bennett called the setter spot thequarterback to the team’s offense and Waldman will be getting her firstshot at a starting spot, after playing in 32 games last season.“Lyndsey put a lot of work into the playing the position this pastspring and has improved her consistency and decision making,’’Bennett says. “She will see us through a lot of options on offense andher decision-making will be key.”Sophomore returner Leah Cole might also see time at the setter spotthis fall for the Mount, and at the defensive specialist position, too.She played In 19 games last fall for the Lions.Libero/Defensive SpecialistSenior Jamie Cooper looks to control the Lions’ defense from the backthis season as the team’s starting libero. Cooper had a team-high 431digs last fall and gives the Mount excellent ability in the back court.Three freshmen players, Michelle Woods, Jacklyn Stenger andJennifer Szekely will also see time in these areas. Woods givesthe team good speed and defensive ability while Szekely, a strongcompetitor who can attack as well, will push for playing time atdefensive specialist. Stenger will add to the Lions’ depth at libero.2008All-AmericanJamieGrauvogelprepares toserve.2009 VOLLEYBALL GUIDE 11
