GOSPEL/ÉVANGILE Mark 6: 7-13<br />

A reading from <strong>the</strong> holy Gospel according to Mark<br />

Jesus summoned <strong>the</strong> Twelve and began to send <strong>the</strong>m out two by two and gave <strong>the</strong>m<br />

authority over unclean spirits. He instructed <strong>the</strong>m to take nothing for <strong>the</strong> journey<br />

but a walking stick--no food, no sack, no money in <strong>the</strong>ir belts. <strong>The</strong>y were, however,<br />

to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to <strong>the</strong>m, "Wherever you enter a<br />

house, stay <strong>the</strong>re until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to<br />

you, leave <strong>the</strong>re and shake <strong>the</strong> dust <strong>of</strong>f your feet in testimony against <strong>the</strong>m." So <strong>the</strong>y<br />

went <strong>of</strong>f and preached repentance. <strong>The</strong> Twelve drove out many demons, and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

anointed with oil many who were sick and cured <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Composers<br />

Fa<strong>the</strong>r Lucien Deiss, CSSp, a native <strong>of</strong> France and resident <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Seminaire<br />

des Missiones in Larue, France, was during his lifetime a pastor, liturgist,<br />

author, international lecturer, renowned Scripture scholar, composer, and an<br />

expert on liturgical music. Fr. Deiss a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Congregation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit, he was selected by Pope Paul VI to coordinate <strong>the</strong> Lectionary psalter<br />

following <strong>the</strong> Second Vatican Council and was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Conciliumon<br />

Liturgy. His Biblical Hymns and Psalms was <strong>the</strong> first significant way that millions <strong>of</strong><br />

Catholics in <strong>the</strong> U.S. came to sing <strong>the</strong> Word <strong>of</strong> God and treasure it in <strong>the</strong>ir hearts. For this<br />

he was given an honorary Doctorate in Sacred Music from Duquesne University. He was a<br />

specialist in biblical exegesis and he formerly occupied <strong>the</strong> Chair <strong>of</strong> Sacred Scripture and<br />

Dogmatic <strong>The</strong>ology at <strong>the</strong> Grand Scholasticat des Peres du Saint-Esprit in Paris. Fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Deiss served as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Committee for <strong>the</strong> <strong>French</strong> Ecumenical Bible and was<br />

formerly liturgical editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> magazine Assemblee Novelle. As a missionary priest, he<br />

gave retreats and worked with <strong>the</strong> poor in several nations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, including Africa,<br />

Haiti and Taiwan, for many years. Fa<strong>the</strong>r Deiss passed away on October 9, 2007 at age 86.<br />

Gabriel Urbain Fauré (12 May 1845 – 4 November 1924) was a <strong>French</strong><br />

composer, organist, pianist, and teacher. He was <strong>the</strong> foremost <strong>French</strong><br />

composer <strong>of</strong> his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th century<br />

composers. His harmonic and melodic language affected how harmony was<br />

later taught. In <strong>the</strong> rigid <strong>of</strong>ficial musical establishment <strong>of</strong> Paris in <strong>the</strong> second<br />

half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 19th century Gabriel Fauré won acceptance with difficulty. He was<br />

a pupil <strong>of</strong> Camille Saint-Saëns at <strong>the</strong> Ecole Niedermeyer and served as organist<br />

at various Paris churches, including finally <strong>the</strong> Madeleine, but had no teaching position until<br />

1897 at <strong>the</strong> Conservatoire. In 1905 he became director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Conservatoire and introduced<br />

a number <strong>of</strong> necessary reforms. He retired in 1920, after which he was able to devote himself<br />

more fully again to composition, notably two final chamber works, a piano trio and a string<br />

quartet. He died in Paris in 1924.<br />

Charles-François Gounod (17 June 1818 – 17 October or 18 October 1893) was<br />

a <strong>French</strong> composer, known for his Ave Maria as well as his operas Faust and<br />

Roméo et Juliette. Gounod was born in Paris, <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> a pianist mo<strong>the</strong>r and an<br />

artist fa<strong>the</strong>r. He entered <strong>the</strong> Paris Conservatoire, where he studied under<br />

Fromental Halévy and Pierre Zimmermann. During his stay <strong>of</strong> four years in<br />

Italy, Gounod studied <strong>the</strong> music <strong>of</strong> Palestrina and o<strong>the</strong>r sacred works <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sixteenth century; <strong>the</strong>se he never ceased to cherish. Around 1846-47 he gave<br />

serious consideration to joining <strong>the</strong> priesthood, but he changed his mind before actually<br />

taking holy orders, and went back to composition. In 1854, Gounod completed a Messe<br />

Solennelle, also known as <strong>the</strong> Saint Cecilia <strong>Mass</strong>. During 1855 Gounod wrote two symphonies.<br />

His Symphony No. 1 in D major was <strong>the</strong> inspiration for <strong>the</strong> Symphony in C, composed later<br />

that year by Georges Bizet, who was <strong>the</strong>n Gounod's 17-year-old student. Fanny<br />

Mendelssohn, sister <strong>of</strong> Felix Mendelssohn, introduced <strong>the</strong> keyboard music <strong>of</strong> Johann<br />

Sebastian Bach to Gounod, who came to revere Bach. It inspired Gounod to devise an<br />

improvisation <strong>of</strong> a melody over <strong>the</strong> C major Prelude (BWV 846). To this melody, in 1859<br />

Gounod fitted <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ave Maria, resulting in a setting that became world-famous.<br />

He had no great <strong>the</strong>atrical success until Faust (1859), derived from Goe<strong>the</strong>. This remains <strong>the</strong><br />

composition for which he is best known; and although it took a while to achieve popularity,<br />

it became one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most frequently staged operas <strong>of</strong> all time. From 1870 to 1874 Gounod<br />

lived in England. He became <strong>the</strong> first conductor <strong>of</strong> what is now <strong>the</strong> Royal Choral Society.<br />

Much <strong>of</strong> his music from this time is vocal. Later in his life, Gounod returned to his early<br />

religious impulses, writing much sacred music. His Pontifical An<strong>the</strong>m (Marche Pontificale,<br />

1869) eventually (1949) became <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial national an<strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong> Vatican City. He expressed a<br />

desire to compose his Messe à la mémoire de Jeanne d'Arc (1887) while kneeling on <strong>the</strong> stone on<br />

which Joan <strong>of</strong> Arc knelt at <strong>the</strong> coronation <strong>of</strong> Charles VII <strong>of</strong> France. A devout Catholic, he<br />

had on his piano a music-rack in which was carved an image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> Jesus. In 1893,<br />

shortly after he had put <strong>the</strong> finishing touches to a requiem written for his grandson, he died<br />

<strong>of</strong> a stroke in Saint-Cloud, France.<br />

Félix-Alexandre Guilmant (12 March 1837 – 29 March 1911) was a <strong>French</strong><br />

organist and composer. Guilmant is considered as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> founders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nineteenth-century <strong>French</strong> Romantic school <strong>of</strong> organ playing. As a composer,<br />

editor, musicologist and publisher he made significant contributions to <strong>the</strong><br />

organ repertoire. His teaching led to a vast improvement in <strong>the</strong> technical<br />

abilities <strong>of</strong> organists as well as in <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> organ performance in general.<br />

He was a world-renowned performer and improviser who inspired a greater<br />

appreciation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> organ and its music amongst <strong>the</strong> general public. Guilmant was born in<br />

Boulogne-sur-Mer. Guilmant was active his entire pr<strong>of</strong>essional life as a composer, editor and<br />

publisher <strong>of</strong> organ music. His output for <strong>the</strong> organ is so vast that he can be described as one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most prolific <strong>of</strong> composers for <strong>the</strong> instrument. He died in Meudon in 1911.<br />

Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835 – 16 December 1921) was a <strong>French</strong><br />

Late-Romantic composer, organist, conductor, and pianist. Camille Saint-Saëns<br />

was something <strong>of</strong> an anomaly among <strong>French</strong> composers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nineteenth century<br />

in that he wrote in virtually all genres, including opera, symphonies, concertos,<br />

songs, sacred and secular choral music, solo piano, and chamber music. He was<br />

born in Paris on October 9, 1835. He was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most precocious musicians<br />

ever, beginning piano lessons with his aunt at two-and-a-half and composing his<br />

first work at three. At age seven he studied composition with Pierre Maledin. When he was ten,<br />

he gave a concert that included Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, Mozart’s B flat Concerto, K.<br />

460, along with works by Bach, Handel, and Hummel. In 1848, he entered <strong>the</strong> Paris<br />

Conservatory and studied organ and composition. By his early twenties, following <strong>the</strong><br />

composition <strong>of</strong> two symphonies, he had won <strong>the</strong> admiration and support <strong>of</strong> Berlioz, Liszt,<br />

Gounod, Rossini, and o<strong>the</strong>r notable figures. From 1853 to 1876, he held church organist posts;<br />

he also taught at <strong>the</strong> École Niedermeyer. In 1875, Saint-Saëns married <strong>the</strong> 19-year-old Marie<br />

Truffot, bringing on perhaps <strong>the</strong> saddest chapter in his life. <strong>The</strong> union produced two children who<br />

died within six weeks <strong>of</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r, one from a four-story fall. <strong>The</strong> marriage ended in 1881.<br />

Oddly, this dark period in his life produced some <strong>of</strong> his most popular works, including Danse<br />

macabre (1875) and Samson et Dalila (1878). After <strong>the</strong> tragic events <strong>of</strong> his marriage, Saint-Saëns<br />

developed a fondness for Fauré and his family, acting as a second fa<strong>the</strong>r to Fauré’s children.<br />

Curiously, after 1890, Saint-Saëns’ music was regarded with some condescension in his<br />

homeland, while in England and <strong>the</strong> United <strong>St</strong>ates he was hailed as France’s greatest living<br />

composer well into <strong>the</strong> twentieth century. Saint-Saëns experienced an especially triumphant<br />

concert tour when he visited <strong>the</strong> U.S. in1915. In <strong>the</strong> last two decades <strong>of</strong> his life, he remained<br />

attached to his dogs and was largely a loner. He died in Algeria on December 16, 1921.<br />

Charles-Marie Jean Albert Widor (21 February 1844 – 12 March 1937) was a<br />

<strong>French</strong> organist, composer and teacher. Widor was born in Lyon, to a family <strong>of</strong><br />

organ builders, and initially studied music <strong>the</strong>re with his fa<strong>the</strong>r, François-Charles<br />

Widor, titular organist <strong>of</strong> Saint-François-de-Sales. <strong>The</strong> <strong>French</strong> organ builder<br />

Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, was a friend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Widor family; he arranged for <strong>the</strong><br />

talented young organist to study in Brussels in 1863 with Jacques-Nicolas<br />

Lemmens for organ technique and with <strong>the</strong> elderly François-Joseph Fétis,<br />

director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Brussels Conservatoire, for composition. In January 1870 <strong>the</strong> 25-year-old Widor<br />

was appointed as "provisional" organist <strong>of</strong> Saint-Sulpice in Paris, <strong>the</strong> most prominent position<br />

for a <strong>French</strong> organist. <strong>The</strong> organ at <strong>St</strong>-Sulpice was Cavaillé-Coll's masterwork; <strong>the</strong> instrument's<br />

spectacular capabilities proved an inspiration to Widor. Widor remained as organist at <strong>St</strong>-<br />

Sulpice for nearly 64 years, until <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> 1933. He was succeeded in 1934 by his former<br />

student and assistant, Marcel Dupré. In 1890, upon <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> César Franck, Widor<br />

succeeded him as organ pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Paris Conservatoire. Later (1896), he gave up this post<br />

to become composition pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> same institution. In 1921, Widor founded <strong>the</strong><br />

American Conservatory at Fontainebleau with Francis-Louis Casadesus. He was <strong>the</strong> Director<br />

until 1934, when he was succeeded by Maurice Ravel. At <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 76, Widor married<br />

Mathilde de Montesquiou-Fézensac. On 31 December 1933, Widor resigned his position at<br />

Saint-Sulpice. Three years later he suffered a stroke which paralyzed <strong>the</strong> right side <strong>of</strong> his body,<br />

although he remained mentally alert to <strong>the</strong> last. He died at his home in Paris on 12 March 1937<br />

at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 93, and his remains were interred in <strong>the</strong> crypt <strong>of</strong> Saint-Sulpice four days later.
