Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation
of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he destined us for
adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will, for the
praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved. In him we have
redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of
his grace that he lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight, he has made known to us
the mystery of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him as a plan for the
fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth.
In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who
accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will, so that we might exist for
the praise of his glory, we who first hoped in Christ. In him you also, who have heard

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark
Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them
authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey
but a walking stick--no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however,
to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, "Wherever you enter a
house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to
you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them." So they
went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they
anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Toccata (Symphonie No. 5) Charles Marie Widor
Composers
Father Lucien Deiss, CSSp, a native of France and resident of the Seminaire
des Missiones in Larue, France, was during his lifetime a pastor, liturgist,
author, international lecturer, renowned Scripture scholar, composer, and an
expert on liturgical music. Fr. Deiss a member of the Congregation of the Holy
Spirit, he was selected by Pope Paul VI to coordinate the Lectionary psalter
following the Second Vatican Council and was a member of the Conciliumon
Liturgy. His Biblical Hymns and Psalms was the first significant way that millions of
Catholics in the U.S. came to sing the Word of God and treasure it in their hearts. For this
he was given an honorary Doctorate in Sacred Music from Duquesne University. He was a
specialist in biblical exegesis and he formerly occupied the Chair of Sacred Scripture and
Dogmatic Theology at the Grand Scholasticat des Peres du Saint-Esprit in Paris. Father
Deiss served as a member of the Committee for the French Ecumenical Bible and was
formerly liturgical editor of the magazine Assemblee Novelle. As a missionary priest, he
gave retreats and worked with the poor in several nations of the world, including Africa,
Haiti and Taiwan, for many years. Father Deiss passed away on October 9, 2007 at age 86.
Gabriel Urbain Fauré (12 May 1845 – 4 November 1924) was a French
composer, organist, pianist, and teacher. He was the foremost French
composer of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th century
composers. His harmonic and melodic language affected how harmony was
later taught. In the rigid official musical establishment of Paris in the second
half of the 19th century Gabriel Fauré won acceptance with difficulty. He was
a pupil of Camille Saint-Saëns at the Ecole Niedermeyer and served as organist
at various Paris churches, including finally the Madeleine, but had no teaching position until
1897 at the Conservatoire. In 1905 he became director of the Conservatoire and introduced
a number of necessary reforms. He retired in 1920, after which he was able to devote himself
more fully again to composition, notably two final chamber works, a piano trio and a string
quartet. He died in Paris in 1924.

Charles-François Gounod (17 June 1818 – 17 October or 18 October 1893) was
a French composer, known for his Ave Maria as well as his operas Faust and
Roméo et Juliette. Gounod was born in Paris, the son of a pianist mother and an
artist father. He entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied under
Fromental Halévy and Pierre Zimmermann. During his stay of four years in
Italy, Gounod studied the music of Palestrina and other sacred works of the
sixteenth century; these he never ceased to cherish. Around 1846-47 he gave
serious consideration to joining the priesthood, but he changed his mind before actually
taking holy orders, and went back to composition. In 1854, Gounod completed a Messe
Solennelle, also known as the Saint Cecilia Mass. During 1855 Gounod wrote two symphonies.
His Symphony No. 1 in D major was the inspiration for the Symphony in C, composed later
that year by Georges Bizet, who was then Gounod's 17-year-old student. Fanny
Mendelssohn, sister of Felix Mendelssohn, introduced the keyboard music of Johann
Sebastian Bach to Gounod, who came to revere Bach. It inspired Gounod to devise an
improvisation of a melody over the C major Prelude (BWV 846). To this melody, in 1859
Gounod fitted the words of the Ave Maria, resulting in a setting that became world-famous.
He had no great theatrical success until Faust (1859), derived from Goethe. This remains the
composition for which he is best known; and although it took a while to achieve popularity,
it became one of the most frequently staged operas of all time. From 1870 to 1874 Gounod
lived in England. He became the first conductor of what is now the Royal Choral Society.
Much of his music from this time is vocal. Later in his life, Gounod returned to his early
religious impulses, writing much sacred music. His Pontifical Anthem (Marche Pontificale,
1869) eventually (1949) became the official national anthem of Vatican City. He expressed a
desire to compose his Messe à la mémoire de Jeanne d'Arc (1887) while kneeling on the stone on
which Joan of Arc knelt at the coronation of Charles VII of France. A devout Catholic, he
had on his piano a music-rack in which was carved an image of the face of Jesus. In 1893,
shortly after he had put the finishing touches to a requiem written for his grandson, he died
of a stroke in Saint-Cloud, France.
Félix-Alexandre Guilmant (12 March 1837 – 29 March 1911) was a French
organist and composer. Guilmant is considered as one of the founders of the
nineteenth-century French Romantic school of organ playing. As a composer,
editor, musicologist and publisher he made significant contributions to the
organ repertoire. His teaching led to a vast improvement in the technical
abilities of organists as well as in the quality of organ performance in general.
He was a world-renowned performer and improviser who inspired a greater
appreciation of the organ and its music amongst the general public. Guilmant was born in
Boulogne-sur-Mer. Guilmant was active his entire professional life as a composer, editor and
publisher of organ music. His output for the organ is so vast that he can be described as one
of the most prolific of composers for the instrument. He died in Meudon in 1911.

Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835 – 16 December 1921) was a French
Late-Romantic composer, organist, conductor, and pianist. Camille Saint-Saëns
was something of an anomaly among French composers of the nineteenth century
in that he wrote in virtually all genres, including opera, symphonies, concertos,
songs, sacred and secular choral music, solo piano, and chamber music. He was
born in Paris on October 9, 1835. He was one of the most precocious musicians
ever, beginning piano lessons with his aunt at two-and-a-half and composing his
first work at three. At age seven he studied composition with Pierre Maledin. When he was ten,
he gave a concert that included Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, Mozart’s B flat Concerto, K.
460, along with works by Bach, Handel, and Hummel. In 1848, he entered the Paris
Conservatory and studied organ and composition. By his early twenties, following the
composition of two symphonies, he had won the admiration and support of Berlioz, Liszt,
Gounod, Rossini, and other notable figures. From 1853 to 1876, he held church organist posts;
he also taught at the École Niedermeyer. In 1875, Saint-Saëns married the 19-year-old Marie
Truffot, bringing on perhaps the saddest chapter in his life. The union produced two children who
died within six weeks of each other, one from a four-story fall. The marriage ended in 1881.
Oddly, this dark period in his life produced some of his most popular works, including Danse
macabre (1875) and Samson et Dalila (1878). After the tragic events of his marriage, Saint-Saëns
developed a fondness for Fauré and his family, acting as a second father to Fauré’s children.
Curiously, after 1890, Saint-Saëns’ music was regarded with some condescension in his
homeland, while in England and the United States he was hailed as France’s greatest living
composer well into the twentieth century. Saint-Saëns experienced an especially triumphant
concert tour when he visited the U.S. in1915. In the last two decades of his life, he remained
attached to his dogs and was largely a loner. He died in Algeria on December 16, 1921.
Charles-Marie Jean Albert Widor (21 February 1844 – 12 March 1937) was a
French organist, composer and teacher. Widor was born in Lyon, to a family of
organ builders, and initially studied music there with his father, François-Charles
Widor, titular organist of Saint-François-de-Sales. The French organ builder
Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, was a friend of the Widor family; he arranged for the
talented young organist to study in Brussels in 1863 with Jacques-Nicolas
Lemmens for organ technique and with the elderly François-Joseph Fétis,
director of the Brussels Conservatoire, for composition. In January 1870 the 25-year-old Widor
was appointed as "provisional" organist of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, the most prominent position
for a French organist. The organ at St-Sulpice was Cavaillé-Coll's masterwork; the instrument's
spectacular capabilities proved an inspiration to Widor. Widor remained as organist at St-
Sulpice for nearly 64 years, until the end of 1933. He was succeeded in 1934 by his former
student and assistant, Marcel Dupré. In 1890, upon the death of César Franck, Widor
succeeded him as organ professor at the Paris Conservatoire. Later (1896), he gave up this post
to become composition professor at the same institution. In 1921, Widor founded the
American Conservatory at Fontainebleau with Francis-Louis Casadesus. He was the Director
until 1934, when he was succeeded by Maurice Ravel. At the age of 76, Widor married
Mathilde de Montesquiou-Fézensac. On 31 December 1933, Widor resigned his position at
Saint-Sulpice. Three years later he suffered a stroke which paralyzed the right side of his body,
although he remained mentally alert to the last. He died at his home in Paris on 12 March 1937
at the age of 93, and his remains were interred in the crypt of Saint-Sulpice four days later.
