The Implications of Smart Sensor Standards 30113.4 Automated/Remote Sensing and the WebThe major features of IEEE 1451.1 and IEEE 1451.2 standards were demonstratedat Sensors Expo Boston in May 1997 [7]. The demonstration includedparticipants from sensor and transducer manufacturers, control network vendors,system integrators, and users. The networked 1451 devices were accessiblevia a common 10-Mbps Ethernet backbone. Figure 13.2 shows the architectureconcept used in the demonstration. The integration of multivendor networksand devices using the common set of interfaces of IEEE 1451 was demonstratedwith Internet-based technologies, including World Wide Web (WWW)browser software, Java, HTML Web pages, and the Internet protocol (IP)suite.Figure 13.3 illustrates a reference implementation of the IEEE 1451 standard[9]. The STIM in the figure contains a low-cost microcontroller programmedto support the 1451 digital interface. The microcontroller reads theTEDS and gathers sensor readings from the ADC. The dotted-line blocks performboth firmware and software functions. The firmware on the NCAPaccesses the STIM through a 1451.2 driver.
