292 Understanding Smart SensorsFigure 12.14 illustrates the interface for a minibus for multiple modulesthat are physically separated. The interface will supports TEDS, as well as channelidentification, hot swapping, and time-synchronization protocols. Thetransducer bus interface module (TBIM) will consist of one to N transducers, aP1451.3-defined TEDS, and interface logic to control and transfer data acrossthe minibus. Most likely, the TEDS will contain a meta TEDS, a meta-IDTEDS, a channel TEDS, a channel-ID TEDS, a calibration TEDS, and acalibration-ID TEDS but with different names to avoid confusion with thosedefined in 1451.2. The transducer bus controller (TBC) will manage the minibusand handle the setup and data transfer [12].12.6 IEEE P1451.4The amount of existing sensor and networking technologies and the cost oftransitioning to the digital network standards defined in 1451.1, 1451.2, andP1451.3 are issues that the proponents of the standard are addressing. Analogsensors, with their existing wiring and the requirement for wide bandwidthanalog measurements are being addressed by P1451.4. The proposed IEEE1451.4 will establish a standard that allows those analog-output, mixed-modetransducers to communicate digital information with a high-level IEEE 1451XDCRADCXDCRADCXDCRDI/OTransducerelectronicdata sheet(TEDS)InterfacelogicTransducerelectronicdata sheet(TEDS)InterfacelogicTransducer businterface module (TBIM)Transducer businterface module (TBIM)Transducer buscontroller (TBC)IEEE P1451.3 transducer busFigure 12.14 IEEE 1451.3 interface specification proposal.
