Menciassi, A. Eisinberg, G. Scalari, C. Anticoli, M.C. Carrozza, P. Dario, receives the Best Manipulation Paper Award at ICRA 2001 (Seoul, South Korea)Curriculum descriptionIn 1995, Arianna Menciassi obtained the laurea degree in Physics (magna cum laude) from the PisaUniversity. Thus, she joined the Biomedical Microengineering Lab of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna(SSSA) in Pisa, where she obtained a PhD position in the year 1996, with a research program onmethods and technologies for micromanipulation of biological microstructures. The PhD thesis defense was in 1999 and the main results of her thesis were awarded with the BestManipulation Paper Award at the IEEE RAS Conf. on Robotics and Automation (2001, Seoul, SouthKorea). Since June 2006, she has been Associate Professor of Industrial Bioengineering at the SSSA.Prof. Menciassi teaches Microengineering for Medical Applications and Introduction toBiomechatronics at the SSSA, and Biomechatronics at the Pisa University (Master Degree inBiomedical Engineering). She carries on an intense research and training activity at high level (mastercandidates in biomedical engineering, PhD students, etc.). She is tutor of more than 15 studentsnormally.

Her main research interests involve biomedical robotics, microsystem technology, nanotechnologyand micromechatronics, with a special attention to the synergy between robot-assisted therapy andnanotechnology-related solutions. She carries on an important activity of scientific management ofseveral projects, European and extra-European, thus implying many collaborations and invited talksabroad. She is co-author of about 200 scientific publications (more than 100 on ISI journals) and 6book chapters on biomedical robots/devices and microtechnology. She is also inventor of about tenpatents, national and international. She serves in the Editorial Board of the IEEE-ASME Trans. on Mechatronics; she is Co-Chair of theIEEE Technical Committee on Surgical Robotics. In the year 2007, she received the Well-tech Award (Milan, Italy) for her researches on endoscopiccapsules, and she was awarded by the Tuscany Region with the Gonfalone D’Argento, as one of thebest 10 young talents of the region. From the year 2007, she has been collaborating with the Italian Institute of Technology in Genova, andfrom April 2010 she is affiliated member of the Center for MicroBioRobotics of IIT@SSSA(http://mbr.iit.it/).Short presentation of research activity and scientific productionIn the last years, Arianna Menciassi has strengthened her research activities on the study and designof miniature and micro-machines for medical applications, with a peculiar attention for issues of activecontrol of locomotion and system integration.A large part of her scientific production related to the development of miniature machines for roboticendoscopy, with a deep analysis of actuation, powering and control issues. She has started an intenserelationship with the community of endoscopists and surgeons. Thanks to the development ofendoscopes and tiny but reliable surgical tools, she also produced papers targeted to the medicalcommunity, with an insight on the applicability of new technologies and on the validation of thedeveloped novel instrumentation. In the last years, Arianna Menciassi has been also investigating nanotechnological approaches fordiagnosis and therapy, more and more localized and accurate. More specifically, she studiesnanoparticles and nanofibres as possible smart and teleoperated vectors for diagnostics andintervention. The final objective of this activity is to merge medical robotics competence andtechnologies with the potentials offered by nanotechnologies. The concept of robotic control - that istypical of traditional surgical robots - should be moved also to the miniature therapy, by using “onboard”control or also external control means (e.g. exploiting magnetic fields or ultrasound for thepropulsion and imaging control of microdevices).Selected publicationsIn the ISI Web of Knowledge database, the number of publications (journals and main conferencepapers) by Menciassi from the beginning of her career are about 190. By restricting the search to onlyISI journal papers, this number becomes 110. In the period 2008-present, Menciassi published 71 ISIjournal papers; in the period 2009-present, she published 56 journal papers. Thus, in the last 3 yearsthe number of ISI journal papers would be about 65. Below (section “Recent Papers”), the ISI journalpapers published in the last 3 years are reported, giving priority to papers relevant to the maqinstreamRecent papers- E. Buselli, P. Valdastri, M.
