OUTLOOKbanking onEXPERIENCENumbers are down in 2013, but the DWU volleyballteam is as talented and returns as muchexperience as ever this season.TIGER PREVIEWBy LEAH RADO, Sports Information DirectorNumbers are down for the Dakota Wesleyan Universityvolleyball team in 2013, but that doesn’t mean that head coachEric Viney’s expectations for his squad have changed at all.The Tigers enter the season with 17 players on their roster –including just five upperclassmen – but four of DWU’s sixsophomores saw extended playing time as true freshmen in2012, and the five upperclassmen have all seen their fair shareof court time thus far in their Tiger careers.Viney returns just two sophomores and three juniors, includingone junior transfer, but the four returning upperclassmen haveall played significant roles throughout their DWU careers. Lastseason, the returning players were part of a squad that finished7-27 overall and 2-13 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.“It feels like the third year in a row that we will have more youthon our roster than upperclassmen, but the experience all of ourreturners have from the past season or two will play a huge rolein our pursuit for a strong finish in the GPAC,” Viney said. “Ourcombination of experience and youthful energy will balance outto give us a huge boost of confidence in our abilities as ateam.”The two seniors on this year’s roster are middle hitters RachelTinklenberg and Elizabeth Humiston. Tinklenberg, a6-foot-1 middle from Pipestone, Minn., earned All-GPACHonorable Mention accolades as a junior. She finishedsecond on the team with 236 kills despite missing part of theseason with injuries, and she finished tied for 10th in the leaguewith an average 2.7 kills per game. After three seasons withDakota Wesleyan, Tinklenberg is 16th on the Tigers’ all-timekills chart with 552.TIGERSHumiston is in her fourth year with the Tiger volleyball programand her third season with the varsity. The 5-11 middle hitterserves as a leader on and off the court for Dakota Wesleyan, and will take on more of a leadership role as one of a handful ofupperclassmen in 2013.“If Rachel stays healthy, she is an All-GPAC First-Teamperformer without a doubt,” Viney said. “Liz’s role will certainlyexpand this fall to give us some much-needed experience onthe court. This should be a positive season for her.”Junior setter Briana Jung returns to lead the Dakota Wesleyanoffense for the third straight season. Jung took over as theteam’s main setter as a freshman, and she held onto that roleas a sophomore in 2012. She finished seventh in the leaguewith an average 8.13 assists per game and ended the year with935 assists. Jung, a Warner, S.D., native, also finished with 264digs. After just two seasons with the DWU volleyball program,Jung is fifth on the school’s all-time assists chart with 1,605 and18th on the all-time digs list with 534.“Bri continues to grow as a setter in our offense and improveseach day with understanding our offensive focus and tempo torun each of our plays,” Viney said. “Her playing experience thefirst two seasons will be monumental to our growth as a team.”Junior defensive specialist Katie Lindow, from Green Bay,Wis., is DWU’s most experienced defensive upperclassman.Lindow entered the program listed as an outside hitter as afreshman, but she took on more of a defensive role as asophomore and became a staple in the back row for theTigers. She ended the year third on the team with 302 digs andsecond with 23 service aces.“Katie will continue to be an emotional spark plug for us on thecourt,” Viney said. “Her passion for the game, and hercommitment to her teammates will certainly be infectious toour entire squad.“Our seniors and juniors will be asked to carry a big load ofleadership and performance into every week. I am so confidentin each of their abilities to take on leading this team in a varietyof roles; they provide a great deal of balance for each other.”Other returners for the Tigers include defensive specialistsMaggie Stehly and Mackenzie Stevens, outside hittersHannah Hammer and Sarah Kruse, middle hitter MalloryJark and setter Shelby Vosburg. Stehly led the team with 347digs as a true freshman and served as the team’s libero.Stevens saw limited playing time as a true freshman, recording13 digs.2013 Tiger Volleyball page 6www.dwu.edu

OUTLOOKJark is looking to enter the Tigers’ starting lineup after missinglast season with an injury. The 6-foot middle hitter from Warner,S.D., played high school volleyball with Jung, and she is lookingto get back into the game after a successful prep career. Krusefinished with 89 kills and 10 total blocks as a true freshman, and Hammer saw time in a handful of games.“This sophomore class got its opportunities in big matches lastseason and will need to carry over those experiences to thisupcoming season,” Viney said. “There will be a big demandput on each of them to perform at a high level every week.”Headlining the Tigers’ newcomers is Rebecca Garcia, a 5-7setter from Whittier, Calif. She played two years of collegevolleyball for Rio Hondo College in Whittier before transferringto Dakota Wesleyan. Viney expects Garcia, who earned fourvarsity letters playing prep volleyball at Southlands ChristianSchool in Whittier, to contend for the starting setter spot rightaway.Viney’s other five recruits for 2013 add depth at the net forDakota Wesleyan. Macey Chambers, Taylor Smith, MarissaSoderberg, Taylor Spence and Katie Vetch are all outsidehitters, and Smith also doubles as a middle hitter.TIGERSSoderberg, a 5-10 hitter, comes to the Tigers from RoundupHigh School in Roundup, Mont., where she had a season-high24 kills in a game as a senior. Soderberg has the ability to playmultiple positions in the front row, and she has the potential toplay all six rotations in the future. Spence is a 5-9 hitter fromNorth Branch, Minn. She had a 93 percent hitting average as asenior and a 97 percent serve rate.Smith joins the Tigers from Saratoga High School in Saratoga,Wyo. Smith finished second in the state in blocks and fifth inkills as a senior, and she earned All-Conference accolades asboth a junior and senior. The 5-7 hitter played mostly middle inhigh school, but she looks to shift to the outside at DWU.Chambers, a 5-9 outside hitter, earned four varsity letters atSully Buttes High School. The Blunt, S.D., native had 132 kills,159 digs and 50 service aces as a senior and helped theChargers to district titles in 2011 and 2012. Vetch, a 5-7 hitter, comes to DWU from Lake Crystal, Minn. She had 378 kills, 135blocks and 45 service aces as a senior at Lake CrystalWellcome Memorial High School.“Each of these newcomers will have a very important role in ourteam success this upcoming season,” Viney said. “A majority ofthem will get opportunities in varsity matches, and theirperformances may prove pivotal in the outcome of some ofthose matches.”Dakota Wesleyan was picked to finish 11th in the GPACpreseason coaches’ poll when it was released in early August, but Viney – who enters his sixth season with the Tigers in 2013– is looking to prove the league’s 10 other head coacheswrong. With the leadership and experience of DWU’s returningupperclassmen and younger returning players, along withViney’s newest recruits, Dakota Wesleyan hopes to find itselfnear the top of the traditionally strong GPAC when the seasonends in November.“We have lost a lot of starters from our previous two seasons, soI expected the other GPAC coaches to put us where we are inthe preseason poll,” Viney said. “However, the preseason pollsdon’t mean much to me; it is rare that the final standings everfollow the preseason picks. We have a lot of positive thingsgoing on here in our gym, and we have a few tricks up oursleeves for our opponents. It will be very difficult and frustratingto play against us this upcoming season, and we will fight foreach and every point all the way to last point of the match.”DWU junior Briana Jung sets the ball to a teammate in 2012.2013 Tiger Volleyball page 7www.dwu.edu
