Argentina Visit遊 走 阿 根 廷During mid-August, Hong Kong's weather was sweltering. After 30hours on the plane, I arrived on the other side of the world--Argentina.When I stepped onto this land, I found that winter has just passed inArgentina and spring is coming. Other than wine, the country alsoboasts historic architecture, culture, and passionate dance arts. Inthis European-like ambiance, I began the journey of the grape: first,appreciating Patagonia wine in Buenos Aires, then to the desert Salta,then deep into Cafayate on the scent of a lily-like fragrance, then lastly,to Mendoza, where I experienced the locals' passion for their land andgrapes. Overall, it was a memorable wine trip.Before bringing readers on this journey, let's introduce Argentina'swine. In the new world wine market, Argentina's wine has animportant place, especially Malbec, which is highly praised by critics. Itis clearly different from old-world French wine. Argentina’s wine has amouthfeel that is not only hardy and vigorous, but also warm, intimate,and fresh, full of sweet fruits. Sometimes it even has the distinct tasteof the land. When I arrived in Argentina, I came to understand thatthese characteristics are just like the personalities of Argentineans—hardy exterior, quick to act, but attentive and warm.5455

Here, we can taste many different levels and vintages ofred wine. Some red wines are purple-red, easy to drink, with good fruit flavorsand aging potential. Others are still aging in oak barrels, with a complexstructure—especially the Special Blend 2008, which is exceptionally deliciouspaired with the restaurant's food.At the same restaurant, we also tried red and white wines from two otherwineries. They were both distinct, such as the Bodgea NQN MalmaUNIVERSO Malbec 2009 & Blend 2007, which wisely maintains Argentineanred wine tradition with its vigorous mouthfeel. At the same time, they alsoimproved on traditional winemaking with a more mature body and more layers.With its aging potential, its texture will improve over time.Another winery is Bodega del Desierto. Its Desierto 25/5 Chardonnay isfilled with a light fragrance from the desert on which its grapes are grown. Itsdelicacy and smoothness led me to take sip after sip to savor it. Underthe warm sunshine, the orderly rows of grape vines stood out in the desertin a stunning scenery, stretching out as far as the eye can see. On the label for their Siete Vacaswine, there are seven cartoon cows, which is distinctive. Their range of red andwhite wines use different-aged vines from a single vineyard. While their red wineis purple-red, their white wines have a refined body, and both are repugnant withfruits aromas. With such potential, wines from this young winery is truly worthwaiting for a few years for a delightful surprise.Later, we went to the largest and most historic winery in the desert region,Michel Torino. Their vines are taller than human beings, and are at least 40 to50 years old. The tough, weathered vines seem to say: “When you were stillchildren, my grapes were made into bottle after bottle of fragrant wine.” Whenwe tasted over 10 different kinds of wines with different vintages and pricepoints, we could feel the winemaker’s effort whether the wine is made froma single vineyard or from a 50-year-old Malbec vine to match different grapevarieties (Altimvs 2008). The exquisite and rounded mouthfeel, together with thefull structure, was unforgettable.Lastly, we visited El Porvenir in Cafayate. From winemaking to aging to bottling,the winery pursues quality in every step of the process. Their wines Laborvmand Amautal both have a solid body with complex traits. I was deeply impressedby their Torrontes de Otono 2009—not only was its floral aroma striking, but itsfinish also lingers beyond the tongue to the mouth and throat. This enjoyableexperience concluded the end of my wine trip in the desert.Actually the journey is only halfway over. Though the weather is hot and dry,their wine surprisingly emits a feminine perfume, a floral sweetness, andmild fruity acidity. This unconcealed fragrance comes from the white wineproduced in Torrontes.At the Domingo Molina winery, their wines were young but vigorous. Although thewinery has not been established for very long, they have a unique characteristic.Other than their delicate and aromatic Torrontes white wine, their Malbec andCabernet also stands out. Robert M. Parker, the world'sforemost wine critic, praised her wines as "Best Value" and "Outstanding.” While thefamous Torrontés region in Argentina is known for tannic wines, Balbo’s wines arelight and floral, giving her the reputation as “Queen of Torrontés.”Before creating these feminine wines, Susana Balbo worked hard for over 30 years.She said: “I learned about wine while in university. A teacher taught me to get to knownature, and the wonderful and beautiful world of wine.” That was back in 1981. AfterSusana graduated with a degree in winemaking, she was hired at the Sucesión MichelTorino winery in Salta, Cafayate. She worked for over nine years there, which to her,was a very difficult learning period. She said: “There was no Internet at that time andit was not easy to make phone calls, restricting the flow of information. Added to that,very few women became winemakers in those days. Not many local men will sharewinemaking techniques with me, so I can only read books, becoming totally alienatedfrom the external world.”Perhaps it was because Susana was alienated that she started focusing on her ownwork, and succeeded in improving the existing Torrontés to create a distinctive flavorand texture. But when her wines were first launched, they were not well-received:“Many local winemakers feel that this is not an authentic Torrontés, and only a winefor women to drink. But after six to seven months, my wines were bought in the UnitedStates, quickly followed by orders from around the world. That was when they startedrecognizing my hard work and started using my methods of wine production.”Susana has become a very well-known female winemaker not just in Argentina, butalso internationally.
