S<strong>in</strong>gle Sessions and Beyond20th September 2011Jim Duvall and Karen Young (Canada)This <strong>in</strong>teractive workshop will crackle with new ideas about <strong>narrative</strong> practice and creative revision<strong>in</strong>g ofestablished ones. Jim and Karen are members of one of the few qualitative exploratory research teamsstudy<strong>in</strong>g the process and effects of <strong>narrative</strong> <strong>therapy</strong> with both the people who seek consultation and thetherapist who consult them. They will <strong>in</strong>troduce new ideas such as storied <strong>therapy</strong> as a three-act play,which is a practice for organis<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>gle session or longer <strong>therapy</strong> from beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to closure. In addition,they will <strong>in</strong>troduce ideas that <strong>in</strong>clude a shape-shift<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>cremental map that weaves throughout thetherapeutic conversation, the significance of the circulation and precision of language, those reward<strong>in</strong>gjunctures which are pivotal moments of transformation, revisit<strong>in</strong>g practices and much more. Clear andspecific connections between these concepts and how to put them to work <strong>in</strong> therapeutic practice will bethoroughly described. These guid<strong>in</strong>g frameworks, maps and other ideas can be taken immediately <strong>in</strong>totherapeutic conversations <strong>in</strong> brief, s<strong>in</strong>gle-session, walk-<strong>in</strong> or longer-term therapeutic environments.They will also illustrate how reflexivity and critically reflective practices contribute to the ongo<strong>in</strong>gadjustment and shap<strong>in</strong>g of your <strong>therapy</strong> practice, mov<strong>in</strong>g beyond evidence-based practice to practicebasedevidence. Ways to rout<strong>in</strong>ely weave research <strong>in</strong>to your therapeutic practice, mak<strong>in</strong>g it possible toco-create practice-based evidence with the people that consult you will be discussed. This type ofpartnership with people results <strong>in</strong> a compassionate, culturally accountable practice that addresses thecomplexities and ethics of mean<strong>in</strong>g mak<strong>in</strong>g.Clear presentation, digitally recorded examples, experiential exercises, and a comprehensive handoutpackage will be utilised to create a rich and <strong>in</strong>teractive <strong>narrative</strong> practice tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g experience. About the presentersJim Duvall is the Director of Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at The H<strong>in</strong>cks-Dellcrest <strong>Centre</strong>, Gail Appel Institute (Toronto, Canada)and also serves as the Senior Editor of the Journal of Systemic Therapies. He has been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> thestudy of brief and <strong>narrative</strong> therapies for over 20 years through cl<strong>in</strong>ical practice, research and teach<strong>in</strong>gactivities. He wrote, with his co-author, Laura Beres, the recently published book <strong>Innovations</strong> <strong>in</strong> NarrativeTherapy: Connect<strong>in</strong>g Practice, Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and Research (W.W. Norton & Company).
